Kijong-dong

Hi Visviva- I'm suspicious of the claim at Kijong-dong that the name of the village means "Peace Village"; without knowing the hanja it's impossible to be sure what the name means, but it doesn't sound right to me (I would expect 평화의 마을). Please help

Please take a look at Demographics of South Korea. I've been trying to add content from the U.S. Library of Congress Country studies, public domain content. I thought you were supposed to add reputable content, even if you didn't know Wikipedia formatting rules, so that others could improve it. Instead, one editor keeps just deleting it, changing his reasons every time. First, he thought it was copyright violation. It wasn't. Then he complained that it wasn't wikilinked. I added wikilinks. Now he says it's irrelevant, even though it's all demographics content directly from the demographics section of the country study. I don't know what his problem is. Gyeongju Basin external links...

Hi! The Gyeongju Basin article looks good. I was happy to see that you or another had linked Professor Kang B.W.'s work to that article. I was just talking with Professor Kang yesterday and he mentioned that he had recently published a revised version of that linked paper in a well-known English-language journal. I will get the info and add it as a reference sooner or later. I recall that there might be some findings about flooding or the area's early history that we may be able to incorporate in the article. Hi, thanks for the invite. What would this involve doing? Or should I just continue doing what I'm doing? As far as I can tell, these systems and groups serve mainly to coordinate articles, tell what needs doing, etc. By the way, I gave your username to a guy in California who is writing an article about WP users. From the Korean encyclopedia articles, it's not clear which details are from the main legend and which are from the "alternative" legend, but it's the best I could do. Hi I just added myself to the Wikiproject Korea site. If you have any idea for maps of North Korea you want made feel free to ask. Also I had been adding and updating North Korean military articles recently, but its hard to find good information on North Korea military. I've started to used Google Earth's imaging and knowledge of what military vehicles/aircraft etc. look like in order to get some estimates on what composes North Korea's military. New Chinese surname categories up for deletion

Hi, thanks a lot for that! Not sure if this is of interest to you, but a new editor has just added a number of categories for Chinese surnames, which I believe to be very useful, particularly in grouping individuals who share a common surname but use different romanizations. As is usually the case at the Categories for Deletion area, the people who frequent that place generally try to delete every new category, regardless of whether they understand its use. In this case, they seem not to understand the utility of being able to have a category for everyone with the name "Liu," for example. If you like please voice your opinion here. Thanks, I'm not sure how I missed that you were the proposer. Strange that you wouldn't agree that the sense of surname solidarity for individual (or in rare instances double) hanzi/hanja surnames (which many of my Korean and Chinese friends both feel strongly about) is of sufficient interest to allow for an grouping that would easily transcend the various romanizations. The only other way to do it is to have long lists of names in the individual surname articles. Oh, well, I'm sure I won't be able to change your mind in any case. I don't really know about the distinction between the importance of lineage and surname but I'm sure the lineage within the surname ("clan" or whatever) is stronger than the mere surname itself, as it is in Korea. Of course, a lot of North American Chinese have falsified surnames anyway (in order to get into the U.S.), though many have preserved, in their memories, their "real" family name, which is still very meaningful to them. But once I saw those new surname categories I realized how helpful they are, to identify people with a common hanzi/hanja surname, even if they use a different romanization. Your Smith/Schmidt analogy is apt, but there are always ways to work around things like that. Badagnani 07:24, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

I uploaded the blank for North Korea on Wikimedia commons under maps/asia/korea/north korea filename DPRK_Div.png, copyright shouldn't be a problem for the original since I used a slightly older '98 US Government map (which are not copyright protected) among other things with news reports and other public information about North Korea to make this one. Anyways if you want me to make any changes to lettering on the map I will, but it will take a little. Other than that use it as you like.Orthuberra 03:41, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Baekgwa +maps

I added an empas_m variable for maps from Britannica. I have only applied it to Ryongchon. It uses the article number from empas_b, but links to the map; it requires an extra variable which I think is always "001". If you have any corrections / clean-ups, please feel free to make them. Perhaps we could have an empas_b without the map, and an empas_bm that includes a map link. This would break if there are ever any geographic locations where the map isn't entry #001, but I haven't seen that assumption fail so far.

I was also wondering if it would be useful to extend the template to have an image link. It would be something like the map link, but take two parameters: one for the image number and one for an explanatory description. Hi Visviva a non-korean issue, but there is a problem with serial vandals on the Regina, Saskatchewan article. i have reverted two times already today. i reported the vandalism and requested 'protect page' on some talk page that i thought was appropriate. do you think is there anything else i can do in such matters? Thanks Visviva -- the vandalism has stopped because we pressed for semi-protection. On a different note, I in my talks with Hairwizard about Nangnang Nation, I grasped for a good example of how we might present a topic that has multiple and contested meanings. Then I saw Macedonia (terminology) and thought that the editors of that article have done a good job with an issue that is somewhat similar: Macedonia is a word that has different but related meanings to different groups. Heo Hwang-ok

In the ref section, it states that Ha & Mintz suggest that Ayuta is Ayuthia in Thailand. But heo didn't come to korea until 48 CE. the ayuthia kingdom didn't exist until 1365. thais didn't leave southern china until the 10th century CE. Korean Fauna

I've noticed that you have been working extensively on articles related to Korean fauna. I'm wondering if you've you been doing any work on insects? Some time ago, I uploaded a picture of a strange critter while taking a stroll through Soyosan, near Dongducheon and I took a snapshot of this guy:

Just on mere observation, I am guessing it is an assasin bug of the reduviidae species, but I am still not sure. I've tried doing some research, but I can't seem to find anything in English, and the fellows at the reduviidae talk page haven't been very helpful. Turtle Ship two deck vs. three deck controversy

I would like to insert information on the current two deck vs. three deck controversy surrounding the turtle ship. Most models of the turtle ship assume it was two decked, which would put the rowing sailors in the same deck as the fighting marines. A cumbersome situation indeed. Based on a recently discovered drawing done in the 17th century, which appears to show three decked turtle ships, there has been recent scholarship in Korea that has been supporting the extra deck theory. I think the wiki article needs to address this. Do you wish to help me translate Korean sources into English to help me in this wiki update project? WangKon936 06:06, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi. It's still basically an undecided question. Some authorities have adopted the split, others haven't yet but are considering it. Yes, "Sites of Buddhist prayer and shamanic practice nationwide" sounds much more plausible, since it longer refers to intestines. Do you want to go ahead and update the article? Is there a reference for the statement that we shouldn't do our own translations of book titles? That seems rather restrictive, since we are allowed to translate entire articles from other Wikipedias.

I found an English-language travel book in a local bookstore:

Seolleongtang

I notice that you've made some additions to the seolleongtang entry at English Wiktionary. That's good. But the article here has been hacked up, months ago, and remained that way. It seems that there are conflicting opinions as to the original etymology but I don't agree that the previous one "snow + concentrated + soup" should be removed, even if it's an example of recent hanjaization or folk etymology, which I'm not entirely convinced of. Sweet pickled radish
