May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Rename/merge categories

Please see my proposal to speedily merge or rename these categories from “athletes” to “people” for these four states, as the subcategories for 17 of the 21 states use “people”, Hugo999 (talk) 05:03, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

Literary Hall

I have raised a query regarding the above on the Main Page Talkpage. I am puzzled by the claim that the original grant of land was awarded by Charles II in 1649 and renewed by him in 1688. The former is possible, but given he was in exile in 1649 and England was ruled by his father's opponents, I would be interested in how he had the actual power to make such a grant. The later claim does not seem possible, given that Charles died in 1685. Apologies if I have misunderstood something, and I acknowledge I don't have the cited sources, but it doesn't seem quite right. Regards. KJP1 (talk) 06:20, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2017 November newsletter: Final results

The final round of the 2017 WikiCup is over. Congratulations to the 2017 WikiCup top three finalists:

In addition to recognizing the achievements of the top finishers and everyone who worked hard to make it to the final round, we also want to recognize those participants who were most productive in each of the WikiCup scoring categories:

  • Featured Article – Cas Liber (actually a two-way tie with themselves for an astonishing five FAs in R2 and R4).
  • Good Article – Adityavagarwal had 14 GAs promoted in R5.
  • Featured List – Canada Bloom6132 (submissions) and Japan 1989 (submissions) both produced 2 FLs in R2
  • Featured Pictures – Cascadia SounderBruce (submissions) improved an image to FP status in R5, the only FP this year.
  • Featured Topic – Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions) has the only FT of the Cup in R3.
  • Good Topic – Four different editors created a GT in R2, R3 and R4.
  • Did You Know – Adityavagarwal had 22 DYKs on the main page in R5.
  • In The News – India MBlaze Lightning (submissions) had 14 ITN on the main page in R2.
  • Good Article Review – India Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (submissions) completed 31 GARs in R1.

Over the course of the 2017 WikiCup the following content was added or improved on Wikipedia: 51 Featured Articles, 292 Good Articles, 18 Featured Lists, 1 Featured Picture, 1 Featured Topics, 4 Good Topics, around 400 Did You Knows, 75 In The News, and 442 Good Article Reviews. Thank you to all the competitors for your hard work and what you have done to improve Wikipedia.

You are welcome. I will get to that other article you asked me about perhaps tomorrow. I just want to mention (once again) that in the Olga FitzGeorge article, I removed the commas following initial prepositional phrases of "In + year". Unless a parenthetical phrase (enclosed in a pair of commas) appears after the prepositional phrase, I don't think the comma is needed either for comprehension or as a guide to pronunciation. (I also don't think it even reflects pronunciation in normal speech.) It is a stylistic choice, and I choose the more modern way. If you really prefer the comma, let me know and I'll put them back in. I also wonder about one thing. In this article you often give the birth and death dates of individuals, enclosed in parentheses after the name. I notice that the birth and death dates are separated by a spaced en-dash. I substituted the template {{snd}} (spaced en-dash) for the en-dash, which will ensure that, if the dates need to break at the end of a line, they will break after the en-dash instead of before the en-dash. I suppose a spaced en-dash rather than an unspaced en-dash is needed because the full dates, not just the years, are given. I wonder, though, whether the full dates are needed, or whether they are an unnecessary detail and a distraction. Perhaps just the years would suffice, separated by an unspaced en-dash.
By the way, I was really surprised to see you working on an article about a member of the English nobility. I had been so used to seeing you working on articles dealing with U.S. history, especially the history of West Virginia. How did you get interested in the story of Olga FitzGeorge? How did you like the way she left FitzGeorge and then ended up back in their house, and then she filed for divorce on the grounds that he abandoned her? Corinne, I self-admittedly overindulge in commas, so please always feel free to remove them if they are superfluous. I can definitely go a bit overboard sometimes! As for the birth and death dates in parentheses, I will sometimes add these for close family members, spouses, and children to provide temporal context. I am also fine with whichever dash you feel looks and works best! Much of my early work on Wikipedia dealt with royalty and nobility, and I especially have a soft spot for the nobility born of unequal marriages. They end up leading rather interesting lives, but because they lack titles, they go without coverage on Wikipedia. I saw her name in black, and felt it ought to be blue! Ms. FitzGeorge was definitely a character, and I also liked how after her second marriage, she allegedly ran off with Mr. Clark Kennedy and conveniently went to Jamaica during his divorce proceedings with his second wife. The next time I am in London, I will be sure to visit New Bond Street so I can be photographed where her manicure salon once was to pay my respects! ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, West Virginian. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

WV state parks

You've done a great job expanding the List of West Virginia state parks article. I do have one suggestion, though. You've added a lot of footnotes. Is there a way the text can be better integrated into the body of this article, or perhaps if appropriate, articles about the individual parks? I think it would help improve readability. The FLC editors usually like very succinct lead paragraphs, so I initially packed a lot of content into the footnotes to keep the paragraphs themselves smaller. I just made a few edits to the lead that should slim down the explanatory notes section at the bottom. Please take another look at the list and let me know if there is anything else you would recommend. Once the list has been approved, I will begin working on creating articles for the red links and crafting expansions for the smaller park articles. Romney Classical Institute

Hello West Virginian:

I am in the process of working on the c/e of this article. I ran across two items that I'm drawing to your attention.

In the Hiatus section it says that Nelson relocated to Cumberland. He appears to have spent a year or less trying to revive the institute. Did he leave because he was unsuccessful? Since he owned the institute did he sell it?

Twofingered Typist, unfortunately this is not clear or omitted in the available references. I will be working in a separate article for Nelson following the FAC process for this one, and should I find the answer I will update this article accordingly. Twofingered Typist, the sources are not clear but I have always assumed (without reference) that the facilities probably required some minimal upgrades to meet the Board's requirements for a state-level institution. I've also noticed there are a number of fairly short statements with three or more citations. Romney Classical Institute

Hello:

I reordered the sentences at the end of the Hiatus section and added a clarification I think works under the circumstances.

As to the money raising - the school had been closed for 3-4 years, and I assume vacant, so I think it is reasonable to assume it needed some repairs so I have added "presumably for repairs" to cover this.

In your request for the c/e at the GOCE, you were wondering about the article's organization. I think the way you wrote it is the only logical way to present the information. I notice that an earlier version of the article was copy edited by Corinne. She has an MA in English and is a professional editor of the first order. I'm sure if she had problems with the organization she would have suggested ways it might be improved.

The article is now tagged with my GOCE tag and my part of the c/e is done.

Booker T. Washington State Park (West Virginia)


Hello, West Virginian – You can see that I have completed the copy-edit you requested for Booker T. Washington State Park (West Virginia). I wanted to ask you about two things in one sentence. It is this sentence, which appears in the second paragraph in the Booker T. Washington State Park (West Virginia)#Park establishment and operation section:

  • By 1949 private citizens had donated 7.43 acres (3.01 ha) of deciduous forest land outside the largely African American community of Institute to the Division of State Parks for the construction of an African American recreational area.

1a) Since, in the conversion of acres to hectares, the hectares came out at 3.01 hectares, I wonder if you think it would be a good idea to round the hectare figure off so that it comes out as 3 hectares (or 3.0 hectares). If so, you can add something to the conversion template. See the "Rounding" section at Template:Convert. Use either "Round to a given precision" or "Round to a given number of significant figures". It's your call, though.

1b) I changed "of land of deciduous forest" to "of deciduous forest land". I hope you feel that is an improvement. I was even thinking that "of deciduous forest" would be sufficient, and accurate. It would then read:

What do you think? Which do you prefer? – "of deciduous forest" or "of deciduous forest land"? (or what you had there originally)?

2) The second sentence of the second paragraph in the lead reads:

  • Booker T. Washington was integrated shortly after the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the United States Supreme Court in May 1954.

I know that "Booker T. Washington" really means "Booker T. Washington State Park", but for American readers, at least, when they read "Booker T. Washington", they will first think of the person, and of course "Booker T. Washington [the person] was integrated" doesn't make sense. I believe that readers will get used to seeing "Booker T. Washington" later in the article and know that it means the park, but here, I wonder if you would consider saying "The park was integrated shortly after..." instead of "Booker T. Washington was integrated shortly after..." Just a thought.

3) In the third paragraph in the lead you have this sentence:

I feel that the string of words "West Virginia Conservation Commission Division of State Parks" is a bit unwieldy, particularly the juxtaposition of "Commission" and "Division" ("Commission Division"). I wonder if you would consider, at least here if not later in the article, breaking this up and writing "the Division of State Parks of the West Virginia Conservation Commission" (or adding a comma after "Commission" "the West Virginia Conservation Commission, Division of State Parks") (I prefer the former). I suppose, though, if the agency was known by that string of words, we've got to use it.

  • Corinne, because this is the full proper title of the division within the commission I've gone ahead and added the comma to every usage of the entire term. Let me know how this works! I know the entire term is a bit unwieldy but I wanted to make sure I used the proper naming convention. Hello, West Virginian – I saw that the phrase "Division of State Parks" was missing the second comma in several places so I added it. If you use a comma before the phrase, you've got to use a comma after the phrase. I read what you said about it being the official name, but wouldn't it also be correct to say "the Division of State Parks of the West Virginia Conservation Commission"? If that is correct, then "the West Virginia Conservation Commission's Division of State Parks" would also be correct and could be used to vary the sentence structure, perhaps after first mention. I think these are more normal ways of saying it than "West Virginia Conservation Commission, Division of State Parks".  – Corinne (talk) 17:22, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

4) The first sentence of the second paragraph of the Booker T. Washington State Park (West Virginia)#Area history section is:

First, I suggest you read the short article False title. The modifiers preceding "George Washington" is an example of a "false title". It is considered by some to be journalistic writing. Others, particularly American readers, find it acceptable. I just wanted to point it out to you and ask you to give it some thought. One way to avoid this is to add the definite article "the" before "French and Indian War veteran", but, as you'll see in the article, William Safire says this sounds odd to American ears. Another way to avoid using the false title would be to put the modifiers after the name, as follows:

You can leave the sentence as it is, and probably no one will say anything, or you can choose one of the two alternatives I mentioned, preferably the second one. I'm interested to hear what you think, and what sounds best to you.

I know that "Institute" is linked to an article about the town, and that it should be obvious that it is a town since it is followed by "in the U.S. state of West Virginia", but because it is so rare to have a town named with a word that means a type of organization, it might be helpful to readers to add "the town of", "the small town of", or "the community of" before "Institute". Morgan Morgan Monument


Hello, West Virginian – If there is anything in my edits you disagree with or don't understand, please let me know. I wanted to ask you about something. At the beginning of the article, you had "also known as Morgan Park" in parentheses after "The Morgan Morgan Monument". At first, (in edit mode) I did not see the close parenthesis, so I changed it to a phrase enclosed in two commas. Then I saw the close parenthesis (but forgot to remove it until later). I changed it to commas partly because I didn't see the close parenthesis but partly also because I think commas are easier to read and break up the flow of the sentence less than do parentheses. I also vaguely remember learning several years ago from a visually disabled editor that parentheses slow down visually disabled readers more than commas. Perhaps we could ask Graham87 about this.

I don't know if "also known as" phrases that appear right after the initial term at the beginning of articles are usually in parentheses, or sometimes in parentheses and sometimes in a pair of commas.

Later in the article, at the beginning of the Morgan Morgan Monument#Geography and setting section, you have the same phrases. I decided to leave the parentheses for comparison's sake. Once it is decided which type of punctuation to use, we've got to make the two instances consistent with each other. Of course, your own preference is important, too.

2) Do you remember that long phrase we discussed with regard to another article, "the West Virginia Conservation Commission Division of State Parks"? We discussed writing either:

  • the Division of State Parks of the West Virginia Conservation Commission, or
  • the West Virginia Conservation Commission, Division of State Parks

(or leaving it as it was).

You selected the second option, adding a comma after "Commission". This time, it occurred to me to add an apostrophe s after "Commission", so I did that throughout the article. If you think that is inaccurate, or you just don't like it, I'd be glad to go through and remove it and replace it either with nothing or with the comma. Just let me know. If you think it is accurate, and you like the apostrophe s, we can go back to the other article and change the comma to the apostrophe s.

3) At the end of the second paragraph in Morgan Morgan Monument#Geography and setting, I wonder whether you think the distance between the monument and the Inwood Quarry needs to be so precise: 3,255.7 feet. What would you think of rounding this off to 3,255 feet or 3,256 feet? It's really up to you.  – Corinne (talk) 17:05, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
