In the News
  • NASA called off a planned spacewalk of SpaceX Crew-11 on 8 January, and later cancelled the mission outright, after one of the crewmembers, Mike Fincke, was reported to have a medical complication. This was the first time that this occurred in US history.
  • On 11 January, the Pandora spacecraft was successfully launched. Pandora is designed to study the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets, with the intention of identifying targets for future observation.
Article of the month

Exoplanetary Circumstellar Environments and Disk Explorer (EXCEDE) is a proposed space telescope for NASA's Explorer program to observe circumstellar protoplanetary and debris discs and study planet formation around nearby (within 100 parsecs) stars of spectral classes M to B. Had it been selected for development, it was proposed to launch in 2019.

The spacecraft concept proposed to use a 70 centimeter diameter telescope-mounted coronagraph called PIAA (Phase Induced Amplitude Apodized Coronagraph) to suppress starlight in order to be able to detect fainter radiation of circumstellar dust. Characterizing constitution of such disks would provide clues for planetary formation (mostly in habitable zones), while already existing exoplanets can be detected through their interaction with dust disk. The project's Principal Investigator is Glenn Schneider.

Pictured here are two titans of spaceflight history: Dr. Wernher von Braun, one of the main figures of the early American space program and designer of both the Saturn V and V-2 rockets, and five (four visible) Rocketdyne F-1 engines, used on the Saturn V Dynamic Test Vehicle. Dr. von Braun's career is noted for a great number of achievements in human spaceflight, including the Apollo mission which successfully put human beings on the moon; nevertheless, it is burdened with the shadow of his activities in the Nazi Party, especially concerning his work on the V-2.

The engines behind him, in addition to being immense, have the honor of being the only engines used to get humans to the moon, as of the time of writing. Developed in the late 1950s, the 8,400 kilograms (18,500 lb) engines are still the most powerful single combustion chamber liquid-propellant rocket ever made.

Two Wikicurious events in North Carolina this week

There are two Wikicurious events in North Carolina this coming week! These are great opportunities to meet other Wikipedians, help new editors get started, and learn more about subjects you might not be familiar with.

Wikicurious: WNC Women's History Month Edit-a-thon will be a hybrid event held at the Pack Memorial Library in Asheville on Tuesday, March 24, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event is focused on amplifying the stories and figures of under-represented Appalachian artists, writers, and other creators, particularly women in honor of Women's History Month, as well as people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and other disenfranchised communities. In the News
  • The first crewed spaceflight of 2026, SpaceX Crew-12, was launched on the 13th. Four astronauts were flown to the ISS in an atypical indirect handover that was caused by the early return of Crew-11 due to a medical emergency.
  • On the 14th, the ESA lost contact with PROBA-3, a dual-probe technological demonstration mission for chronographic high-precision formation flying. Specifically, the Chronograph Spacecraft lost orientation and drifted away from the Occulter.
Article of the month

A parking orbit is a temporary orbit used during the launch of a spacecraft. A launch vehicle follows a trajectory to the parking orbit, then coasts for a while, then engines fire again to enter the final desired trajectory.

An alternative trajectory that is used on some missions is direct injection, where the rocket fires continuously (except during staging) until its fuel is exhausted, ending with the payload on the final trajectory. This technique was first used by the Soviet Venera 1 mission to Venus in 1961.

Earth is in the bottom-left; the orange part of the atmosphere is the troposphere, the white band in the middle is the stratosphere, and the blue section is the mesosphere.

Wikimedia Apps Newsletter – First Quarter of 2026

Hello, and welcome to the first newsletter of 2026!

In this edition, we’ll walk you through the main updates, experiments, and improvements in the Wikipedia mobile apps during January, February, and early March.

iOS

Activity Tab (iOS)

This quarter focused on scaling and improving the Activity Tab experience.

We released the Activity Tab to all users and continued refining it with:

  • New editing insights, including all-time impact, recent activity, and views.
  • Monthly highlights such as most viewed edits and contributions.
  • Improved onboarding and empty states for different user types.
  • Better navigation within reading history and timelines.
  • Continued survey collection (extended through April).

We also fixed several issues related to saved article syncing, timeline, and deleting items.

Results from scaling

Our goal was to increase account creation by 5%. The results significantly exceeded expectations:

  • Account creation increased by 91% after scaling.
  • 25% of all new accounts were created through the Activity Tab.
  • 18.5% of new users saved an article, and 2.9% made an edit.

We also observed stronger retention among Activity Tab users:

  • 93.8% of logged-in users returned to the app.
  • 91.8% of logged-out users returned.
  • Compared to overall app return rates of 81.9% and 72.1%.

Learnings

  • Personalization continues to drive account creation.
  • Users are more likely to engage in reading than editing.
  • Navigation changes need clearer communication.

Next steps

  • Improve clarity around the History location in Search.
  • Add clearer messaging and guidance, especially for logged-out users.

Liquid Glass

The team also focused on preparations for migrating the app to Liquid Glass, planned for April. We completed a gap analysis and audit, and then triaged and prioritized tasks.

Tabbed Browsing (Tabs)

  • Adding “close all tabs” functionality.
  • Highlighting the active tab.
  • Introducing long-press previews.

Games

  • iOS designs for the “Which came first?” game were completed.

As part of ongoing improvements:

  • History was moved into the Search tab.
  • Adjustments are being made to better support logged-out users and reduce confusion.

Other iOS Updates

  • Integrated hCaptcha into account creation for test wiki.
  • Conducted Explore Feed audit and design groundwork.
  • Fixed multiple bugs, including issues with search, saved articles, and donation flows.

Android

We began testing a new hybrid search experience that combines keyword-based and natural language search.

  • The experiment is now available in beta for Greek, English and Portuguese Wikipedia.
  • Users can opt in or out of the experience.
  • This is part of Phase 1 of the Information Retrieval project.

Other Android Updates

  • Continued work on hCaptcha integration for account creation on test wiki.
  • Improved donation clarity by adding ISO currency codes.
  • Updated image handling to match MediaWiki standards.
  • Ran an A/B test for the Google Play product page (Japanese users).

We also fixed several issues, including:

  • Background re-login issues.
  • Incorrect article titles in Year in Review.
  • Reading list syncing problems.
  • Translation and UI inconsistencies.

Cross-Platform

Explore Feed Refresh

Across both apps, we continued design and research work to rethink the Explore experience, with the design principles of:

  • Retention before depth: reasons to come back matter more than any single deep read.
  • Discovery through remixing: snippets and previews lead into articles, never replace them.
  • Transparent personalization: "Because you follow..." not a black box.
  • Calm, trustworthy browsing: productive and credible.

Design work continued on improving the Explore feed:

  • Two visual directions were developed and wireframed.
  • Different onboarding approaches were explored.
  • User testing is being prepared.

Our current hypothesis is that a more personalized and structured feed will help users better understand its value and increase daily usage. User testing will help determine the direction to move forward.

Year in Review

  • Both teams shared results on the Year in Review project pages (Android, iOS).

Future of Editing on Mobile

The Apps team has started conversations with communities to explore how editing should work on the mobile apps.

The goal is to better support both new and experienced editors, and to guide users toward the right editing tools.

Community input is welcome, and discussions are ongoing.

Looking Ahead

This quarter focused on scaling successful features, especially the Activity Tab, and continuing foundational work on Search and Explore feed.

We’re seeing strong signals around personalization, engagement, and new ways to guide users through reading and editing.

Election results: In our December 2025 coordinator election, incumbents Dhtwiki, GoldRomean, Miniapolis, and Mox Eden were reelected coordinators, and Wikieditor662 was newly elected coordinator, to serve through 30 June. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators will open on 1 June (UTC).

December 2025 Blitz: 16 of the 31 editors who signed up for the December 2025 Copy Editing Blitz edited 116,064 words in 47 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

January Drive: 35 of the 55 editors who signed up for the January Backlog Elimination Drive edited 498,397 words in 183 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

  • On 22 March, Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 31 was used for the first time since being damaged in November 2025. Progress MS-33, a resupply mission to the ISS, was launched from the site following substantial repairs.
  • ESA launched the first two satellites in the Celeste constellation on 28 March. They were launched aboard a Electron launch vehicle, marking the first time ESA has used the vehicle.
  • China's Qingzhou cargo spacecraft was tested for the first time on 30 March. Launched on the maiden flight of the Kinetica 2, the prototype performed a number of tests in coordination with another satellite.

The X-37B back on Earth after completing OTV-2

OTV-2 (also known as USA-226) was the first flight of the second Boeing X-37B, an American unmanned robotic vertical-takeoff, horizontal-landing spaceplane. It was launched aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral on 5 March 2011, and landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base on 16 June 2012. It operated in low Earth orbit. Its USA-226 mission designation is part of the USA series.

The spaceplane was operated by Air Force Space Command, which has not revealed the specific identity of the payload for the first flight. The Air Force stated only that the spacecraft would "demonstrate various experiments and allow satellite sensors, subsystems, components, and associated technology to be transported into space and back."

STS-1 (Space Transportation System-1) was the first orbital spaceflight of NASA's Space Shuttle program. The first orbiter, Columbia, launched on April 12, 1981, and returned on April 14, 1981, 54.5 hours later, having orbited the Earth 37 times. Columbia carried a crew of two—commander John W. Young and pilot Robert L. Crippen. It was the first American crewed space flight since the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) in 1975. STS-1 was also the maiden test flight of a new American spacecraft to carry a crew, though it was preceded by atmospheric testing (ALT) of the orbiter and ground testing of the Space Shuttle system.

The launch occurred on the 20th anniversary of Vostok 1, the first human spaceflight, performed by Yuri Gagarin for the USSR. This was a coincidence rather than a celebration of the anniversary; a technical problem had prevented STS-1 from launching two days earlier, as was planned.

Backlog update

At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.

After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.

2024 and 2025 NPP Awards

JTtheOG was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.

Hey man im josh and MPGuy2824 won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.

Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.

BoyTheKingCanDance, Rosiestep, SunDawn, and Vanderwaalforces were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.

January–February backlog drive

The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.

May backlog drive

An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket if you're interested in following along.

  • Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the moon since Apollo 17, was launched on 1 April. During the lunar flyby, it became the furthest spaceflight in human history on the 6th. Integrity, the re-entry vehicle, splashed down southwest of San Diego on the 11th.
  • On 8 April, the first satellites of the Celeste (LEO-PNT) constellation began broadcasting navigation signals for the first time.

Article of the month

The Gallaudet Eleven were a group of eleven deaf men recruited in the late 1950s and 1960s to participate in a joint research program led by NASA and the U.S. Naval School of Aviation Medicine (later changed to Aerospace Medical Association) to study the effects of prolonged weightlessness on the human body. They were selected for participation in the study because damage they had sustained to the vestibular systems of their inner ears had granted them immunity to motion sickness, making them uniquely resilient to certain physical studies that would have made other test subjects nauseous.

A demonstration of weightlessness by astronaut Clayton Anderson, particularly its effect on liquids. The water's surface tension keeps it in a sphere, which here results in the light reflecting off of Anderson being refracted in such a way that it appears upside-down. It is only upside-down relative to Anderson, as there is no "up" or "down" in a weightless environment beyond convention.
