User page sugestion[edit]

Hello Yurik,
On your user page I read: "I am a software architect, consulting primarily large financial corporations. "

First, I was a little surprized to read that you as a software architect, consult financial corporations. I would rather have expected that these corporations consult you (if they have a software problem). (Of course you can consult them if you need capital or seek to invest some money).

I am not a native speaker of English, but I believe that 'consult' just meant 'go to ask advice' (if I am ill, I consult a physician). Does the word 'consult' also mean something like 'deliver technical advice' nowadays?

Kind regards, Johan Lont 5 July 2005 07:28 (UTC)

Thanks, fixed. --Yurik 07:15, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

same user in ET wiki?[edit]

Hi! are you same user who is behind Yurik name in Estonian wiki? --TarmoK 8 July 2005 09:21 (UTC)

(referencing to your changes in article "Tee (jook))

Please read et:Vikipeedia:Saatkond#Interwiki guidelines, we have been sorting here by language name, not by language code.

Also for Norwegian bokmål, nb: is not anymore in use, instead is used no:

Regards, TarmoK 5 juuli 2005 06:16 (UTC)

Please see [1] for my suggestion of interwiki sort.
Also could you add to the bot settings Estonian language as sorting by language name. Thank you --TarmoK 9 July 2005 08:15 (UTC)
Thanks! I responded in your own discussion. I need to research this issue further to completelly fix our code.
FYI: just in case i mention here that I answered in my talk page. Have a nice day! --TarmoK 08:28, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Robot?[edit]

Moved from sl:user talk:yurik

If this is fully automated account, we can mark it with the »bot« status, so that it won't appear in Recent Changes. Is this OK with you? User page would be fine, anyway. --romanm (pogovor) 23:18, 9 julij 2005 (CEST)

DA wiki[edit]

Please restrain your bot a little. Unregistered bots are quite annoying. Thanks in advance. --Palnatoke (not on my home computer)

Sorry for annoyances. The bot status will be requested shortly. Code still has bugs in it, so i didn't want to rush to get the bot status and be hidden from the other users. --Yurik 15:19, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nynorsk Wikipedia[edit]

Hello Yurik, Sorry about the drastic measures on NN. I am glad, though, that we have established communication now. :-) As you know, the Scandinavian languages are very closely related, and we try to integrate the work on these as much as we can — especially on nn:. As a part of this, we have as a rule on nn: always to include links to no:/nb:, sv: and da: separately before the general interwiki link list. The reason why we begin the separate skanwiki and interwiki sections with comment tags saying skanwiki and interwiki is that this is a method of making "real people" realise that the three first links aren't just an alphabetisation mistake, but an intended extra section. When robots disregard this feature, the long-term result will be likely to be that people will start messing those things up again — a problem we haven't had in quite a while now. We REALLY don’t want to have those times back. This is the reason why it is very important for us that you and Andre Engels don't let your bots mess this code up. Unless....:

A great alternative would be if a WikiMedia software enhancement could include a "neighbour language" interwiki function where interwiki links to a selected group would be generated automatically, and where the definition of this group could be set locally by administrators of each Wikipedia. Thus, Nynorsk Wikipedia could set its preferences to displaying no:/nb:, sv: and da: separately (either as a separate section just over the general interwiki links or as a top-right-within-the-article-text-area horizontal list. Similarly, the Polish Wikipedia might decide to have special links to, e.g., Kashubian, Czech, Slovak and Belarussian; the Russian one might have special links to Belarussian and Ukrainian; etc.

If that feature were implemented, we would of course be happy to forego all the manual coding of a specific skanwiki section. But until this is the case, I beseech you to please let the skanwiki links be between the skanwiki tag and the interwiki tag.

Best regards, Olve 07:58, 11 July 2005 (UTC) (nn:brukar:Olve)[reply]

Hello again Yurik, I have an idea (probably too far-fetched, but I thought I’d mention it anyway): Is it possible to make a template containing a general code that can call upp the contents of interwiki tags with specific prefixes and place them within, e.g. a box in the article text area...? Probably not, but you might know whether this is possible. :)

Hypothetical example: In the article “xyz”, there are interwiki links to da:xyzerne, no:xys and sv:xysan. In the beginning of the article, the template localwiki is placed. This template sends a message to write to memory those codes within double brackets that include the prefixes no: (or nb:), sv: and da:, and to write them to the page according to the structure determined within the code of the template.

Could this work? If yes, it would require a robot to go through all article and category pages and place the template in the code. And then it would run itself from there, and nobody would have to worry about what to do with skanwiki codes and the like... :-)

OK — this is probably a stupid question, but I thought it might be worth asking anyway. -- Olve 05:00, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Olve, thanks for your suggestion, but i don't think it would be very good -- new users would have to learn some strange template, or a non-no: speaker would try to resolve some interwiki and will have no clue what it is. Interwikies as is are very straigh forward. What we really ought to do is to introduce a per-site and per user configuration of the interwiki ordering. This way all a site admin would set it up to display no,nb,sv,... first, then en, then anything else (for example). Or the user who knows french would configure it to show french as the first available choice. Just my two cents :)
--Yurik 05:45, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, what I was trying to describe was a different solution, where the name of the template would be just skanwiki (or whatever else), and the code of the template (which new users won’t even see) contained calling up strings starting with [[no:, sv: etc. and ending with , and then placing the text of these with the necessary reformatting within a field in the text area. But that may be impossible with today’s software. :) Anyway — I really hope someone can find a way to automatise a solution to this problem, so that we don’t have to keep dealing with robots not handling skanwiki tags and “uninitiated” non-robots not handling the lack of them.... :) Olve 07:03, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have submited a code patch to the mediawiki bug2867 to organize interwikies dynamically per site's configuration language file. Vote for it, and/or promote it any other way :) --Yurik 02:24, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Yurik, Great work you’ve done there! :-) I have one question: The individually sorted interwiki links have already stopped to display in the manually entered order, including the skanwiki links no longer being shown on top where they are placed first. Do you know if this means that your upgrade is already being implemented? And if so, could you tell me where to edit the preferences? (I presume that a rough HOWTO will be released as soon as the feature is fully implemented)... :) Olve 04:34, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The current codebase uses an interwiki sorter based on the language code. Thus fi-finish (suomi) would appear before he-hebrew. That's the code in CVS, and I'm assuming its in production. The new code, done as a patch, and not yet applied (as i know), is attached to the bug. It will sort things phonetically, with an optional pre-sort. Add some comments to that bug, like huw much its needed in the scandinavian wikies. --Yurik 07:25, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bot war[edit]

YurikBot appears to be having a war with Chobot over at Hebrew alphabet. I don't know why your bot is removing interwiki links, but it does seem that the Korean page in question is appropriate, no? I can't read Korean, but I can see the Hebrew alphabet is written out on ko:히브리 문자. —Simetrical (talk) 17:55, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know! Its very strange - i just ran it again, and the bot did not complain or tried to remove anything. My guess - the ko: page was being created as it ran, and the link was there before the actual page. I am running the bleading edge code directly from CVS, so there might have been a bug in the code that has been fixed since then. Again, thanks. --Yurik 04:27, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong guess. I'm the operator of Chobot. I don't push any link before the actual page is created. And Could you ask the bot flag for your bot in ko? -- ChongDae 07:21, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will unblock, so you can make the request, but please create a second account on simple: which is strictly for bot edits, something like YurikBot is fine. Bot accounts should always be clearly distinct from "normal edits, even if you don't plan on editing simple except for interwiki. This is very important in case we ever move to meta:single login. -- Netoholic @ 16:49, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've renamed simple:User:Yurik to simple:User:YurikBot. You will have to go re-register for simple:User:Yurik, so that you have it for any non-bot edits. -- Netoholic @ 20:10, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM RUNNING THE INTERWIKI BOT ON WIKIPEDIAS ON WHICH YOU DON'T HAVE THE BOT STATUS. Wait until you get the permissions... Running interwiki.py on years without the bot status does more harm than good.

What are the problems with the years? Please explain. Most sites have already been marked for bot status. --Yurik 13:22, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain your comment on my talk page.
Isn't it quite straightforward? You should wait with mass edits until you get the bot status. Running the bot without the status, esp. running it as much as you do, annoys people and makes it very hard to follow Recent Changes. Don't worry - if you don't add the interwiki links, someone else will, there are enough bots running with the status. It is bad style to run an unrequested bot and force people to ask a steward for a status for you (which actually happened behind your back, the considered alternative was blocking you - too many complaints from the users).
There are no special problems with the years, apart from the amount of edits appearing in Recent Changes. / tsca 09:55, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
