Vigilantism in India refers to when a group metes out extralegal punishment to alleged lawbreakers. Vigilantism is also referred to as "mob justice". It is caused by perception of police corruption[1] and delays in the judicial system,[2] and is usually practised on petty crooks.[2]

  • In August 2011, ten suspected thieves from Andhra Pradesh were beaten to death with stones and wooden clubs by more than 2,000 villagers in Chikaballapur, Karnataka.[3] Police were on the scene but were prevented by the mob from stopping the violence.[3]
