It conducts military formations War draft training of the armed forces annually named "Thunder maneuvers."

Stratfor.com claimed on November 15, 2014 that the region's forces consist '..predominantly of mechanised and motorised units. At the moment, the bulk of these units — which, according to intelligence from Stratfor ground sources, consist of three brigades from the First Army — is based in Mersa Matruh, with smaller forward units stationed in Sidi Barrani and Sallum.'[1]
