April Fools' Day has been a Wikipedia tradition since 2004. In 2015, an editor changed the name of the miscellaneous joke section from "General Tomfoolery" to “General Jerryfoolery”, which spawned a short but friendly edit war that was repeated in 2016 through 2018. In 2019, the First Great Edit War broke out and over one-hundred changes were made to the title of the miscellaneous joke section. As the dust of the first Great Edit War cleared, the community could only wait and see what April Fools' Day 2020 would bring.

In the months and days before April 1, 2020, multiple edits were made to the documentation page for 2020. As the clock struck 12:00, pure chaos was unleashed across the page as editors, many of them quarantined due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, rotated and skewed the page, copypasted the contents of other articles, spammed images across the page (many of them under copyright protection) and generally made the entire page an unintelligible mess. Some order was restored after the page was semi-protected a little after 3 AM UTC, but edits to the "General Tomfoolery" section title continued at a breakneck pace. By the time April 2 rolled around, untold hundreds of article titles had been posted and the Wikipedia community was left shaking its head at the utter chaos that had just unfolded.

Following this edit war, people agreed to prohibit edit warring and vandalism on April Fools Day pages,[1] and administrators are given permission to protect the April Fools Day page and block editors upon any further instances of edit warring and vandalism.

Below is an attempt by the Wikipedia community to document the events of that fateful April Fools' Day.

9–31 March[edit]

  • On 9 March, the section was created under the name "other pranks". It is left in a comment (<!-- like this -->) until shortly before April Fools' Day.
  • Someone made a section that said "bee movie" but linked to shrek instead
  • In the days (and month) before April Fools, the "Do Not Edit" notice was modified from "tomfoolery" to "pranking", then to "pranking/tom/jerryfoolery", and then to "*foolery", and then a reference to last year’s edit war, before being reworded to avoid further edit warring.
  • 3 hours before April 1st, the other pranks section was pre-emptively renamed "The section name people will probably still fight over" foolery. (Foreshadowing?)
  • Also 3 hours before April 1st, this section was changed to Pre-March 32nd pranks.
    • Then it was Pre-February 32nd pranks.
      • Then it was two dates that we shouldn't mention.
        • Then dark humor wasn't funny
  • The section names were inverted seconds before April Fools.

Midnight–1:00 AM[edit]

  • Last year's page tried to start the edit war again
  • The section name was changed to general tomfoolery at midnight
    • The second was linked to a rick roll, and then reverted two minutes later for some reason.
  • And then to General jerryfoolery

  • And then back to tomfoolery again. Looks like the edit war could be returning?

  • ANd then the section title was protected by pikemen.

  • There’s a 33rd of March.

  • Then it was general jerryfoolery.
  • Then it was a song, then it was weedism.
  • Then it was General Jesusfoolery then General Godfoolery.
  • Then it was General Perryfoolery.
  • Then it was general Spikefoolery, then Tykefoolery then TykeandSpikefoolery.

  • Then Red Bull.

  • There were two separate sections for the edit war for a little bit, so they were combined and the new section became “Other pranks + General Perryfoolery”.
  • At one point, the title was "NO"
  • The title was replaced with the lyrics to the song Money Machine by 100 Gecs
  • 90 minutes in, the page was once redirected to a Request for de-adminship
  • At around 1:33 AM, all efforts to preserve the peace had failed and the community dug in for a second Great Edit War

    • Which is a deletion request from 2005. The debate focused on whether the creation of 2020 Summer Olympics was WP:CRYSTAL. The result was keep, on the grounds that we know for sure that the 2020 Summer Olympics will be happening.[1]
  • The edit war halts as once again the page went crazy with vandalism, with text from many pages, and several reverts.
