Defining the Caribbean[edit]

How do we want to define the Caribbean?

Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela

  • CARICOM; mainly a political and economic entity.

Also: List of islands in the Caribbean

I'd want to go for the broad definition, but noting that the boundary between the Caribbean and South/Central America is quite fuzzy.fledgist 02:07, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

I would also include those areas that share a coast with the Caribbean Sea. Texas, Brazil, Panama, Mexico, to name a few. These areas share a history intimate with the rest of the Caribbean proper.

Texas + Florida = Gulf of Mexico, No? CaribDigita 23:04, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't think I've ever seen or heard Florida referred to as a Caribbean place. Bermuda, however, is a Caricom associate member and is sometimes otherwise considered part of the region, so they should be included. Beyond that (and the other Caricom official and associate members), the other islands that are washed by the Caribbean sea should be included since they are geographically and culturally part of the Caribbean; these include Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles and wherever else I don't remember offhand. I don't think these are up for debate.

Then there are the countries on Central and South America that are washed by the Caribbean Sea but are not otherwise considered parts of the Caribbean. Their inclusion, I think, is debatable. Hairouna 03:34, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

In Trinidad and Tobago we would consider Belize, Suriname and Guyana all part of the Caribbean even though they are in Central and South America. This is largely because of the historical links ... there is a common use of English in Guyana and Belize and all three countries are in CARICOM. Dave Smith 01:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Guyana is also part of the East Caribbean Supreme Court circuit. It seems like half the judges in the Eastern Caribbean are from Guyana. Legis (talk - contributions) 17:01, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Coveraged of the Insular Caribbean[edit]

Although the mainland countries are, IMO, Caribbean, I think we need to start with more tractable issues. So to begin with I want to compare coverage of the islands: /Coverage

How is the table on /Coverage supposed to be filled in? --Gpyoung 4 July 2005 21:42 (UTC)

Good question :) I think we need to come up with what we think each entity should have (main article, etc.) and we score them based on quality of the article. Maybe:
Score Meaning
0 No article
1 Stub or short entry
2 Adequate article
3 Good article
4 Featured Article
How does that sound? Guettarda 4 July 2005 22:24 (UTC)

Ok-that sounds good-I can start on some of them tonight since I don't really have anything else to do. But another question-I just finished a re-write of the Cayman Islands article and its in good shape now but some of the more in-depth sub article (ie. Geography of the Cayman Islands are stubs-when rating an article should we look only at the main country page or at the sub pages? Please Advise. --Gpyoung 4 July 2005 23:43 (UTC)

One column for the main article, next column for each subpage. Should probably start with the standard ones and then break them down one by one. Guettarda 5 July 2005 00:28 (UTC)

Something that I have been noticing is that a lot of the sub-pages are taken verbatim out of the CIA World Factbook, and although this is good information -- it is nothing more than raw data. How do we want to approach these pages? --Gpyoung 5 July 2005 00:53 (UTC)

Change them, I think. You should have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Countries. Guettarda 5 July 2005 01:14 (UTC)

Vieques Protests[edit]

The Navy-Vieques protests, which occurred from 1999-2001 were an extremely important event in the caribbean. It was the first time that the President of the US had to address an issue of a little island that it's part of Puerto Rico. So much coverege was given to the event on CNN and the international community. Maybe the article can get expanded an pictures can be added.<<Coburn_Pharr>> 5 July 2005 05:54 (UTC)

Good idea - we need to figure out what sort of things we want to do here, areas of collaboration, etc. I can see three separate categories:
  1. Making sure we have good core articles for each "entity"
  2. Making sure we have good coverage of major international issues concerning the Caribbean - like the Vieques issue.
  3. Making sure we have adequate input into articles which touch on the Caribbean broadly - Pan Caribbean politician and social movements, information technology infrastructure, trade and border issues, etc.
Guettarda 5 July 2005 06:07 (UTC)

Aves Island[edit]

I think we should include Aves Island somewhere in here. The territorial dispute regarding the territory typically reagrded as a Venezuelan possession but also claimed by Dominica. Any thoughts.Mad05963 19:52, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

An invitation from Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket[edit]

If you're a cricket fan, please come along to Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket. We have quite extensive cricket coverage, but as of date, unfortunately, no West Indian members of the WikiProject. We'd love to change that and develop our coverage of West Indian cricket. Caribbean Portal[edit]

An anon added a Caribbean Portal yesterday. IMO, either we need to bring it up to speed, or it should be VfD'd. Guettarda 6 July 2005 14:57 (UTC)

  • I think it's a good start. Since I am presently in Guyana, I'll be focusing on Guyanese articles... I'm new to the Portal business, so I'm not sure exactly what needs to be fixed with that - but if I Figure it out, I'll work on it. --TaranRampersad 8 July 2005 06:10 (UTC)
  • The Question is do we really need a portal now or are there more important things that need to be dealt with? I think we first need to make sure the basic country articles are up to speed, then we should worry about grouping them together and running the portal, which seemingly takes a bit of work. But, that's just my opinion.

--Gpyoung 9 July 2005 04:59 (UTC)

  • Caribbean and West Indies and Antilles is not actually the same as the portal claims. West Indies has also several meanings. The Spanish used the expression Indias Occidentales (West Indies) to refer to the Americas as a whole, whereas the British used it to refer to their small Caribbean colonies or the Lesser Antilles. I'd prefer you guys to use the word Antilles if you only want to refer to the islands and exclude the rest, also to use the language in a more meaningful and less politicised way. You must know that Venezuela and Colombia both claim to be the most Caribbean places on earth. They have a strong argument to claim that, their coast lines on the Caribbean Sea are the longest of any other nation and they both have island territories on the Caribbean sea. Claiming that a few islands of the Caribbean are the entire Caribbean is to give credit to divisions established by the colonialists for political purposes. --tequendamia 03:59, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Category:Politicians of Saint Lucia[edit]

A lot of article son Saint Lucian politicians were "batch translated" from Spanish earlier this month, and need work converting them into English (typical "babelfish"-like translation, many phrases that obviously don't mean what they did in Spanish). If anyone is interested, there's cleanup to do there. Guettarda 14:47, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

Hmm. I just saw the entry for Petrus Compton, and added a sentence. Perhaps I should go back and add his nickname, 'Papo'. (We were exact contemporaries at Mona.) fledgist 19:19, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Minor note: oddities at Arecibo[edit]

I just did a bit of clean-up work on the Arecibo, Puerto Rico article. I found a couple of odd statements on that page that I do not know how to fix. They concern the local airport and basketball team. Could someone familiar with Arecibo please look at my comments on Talk:Arecibo, Puerto Rico and fix these? Thanks. — Nowhither 21:40, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

Pictures of West Indian cricket[edit]

If anyone has freely licensed pictures of anything to do with the West Indian cricket team - players, grounds, crowdshots, whatever - could they let me know. Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Caribbean

  • Lord Cam - limited online presence by musicians from smaller islands should not be grounds for deletion. Guettarda 04:15, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
I was wondering if we should have something like this Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Australia for Caribbean articles up for deletion. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting. It would be interesting to develop a kind of deletion criteria for Caribbean-related articles, which I think differ from the criteria that should be used for, say, United States-related articles. --Kewp (t) 18:29, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good - we could add the subpage and start thinking about the deletion criteria (could use the talk page to get that started). Guettarda 18:35, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Bermuda[edit]

Yes, I know, it's debatable (and much debated) whether Bermuda belongs on this page, but I have a request that you more than many Wikipedians might be able to help with. I was horrified last month to discover that there were only four geography articles about places in Bermuda, and that three of them were stubs. So, I've been "gazetting" the place. There are now 58 articles, plus maps and templates, but (you guessed it) almost all of the articles are stubs. Also, I haven't been there in many years, and much of my information may be out of date. If any of you know anything about the territory, and would be willing to check out the articles in Category:Geography of Bermuda, it would be very useful! Grutness...wha? 01:18, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

  • Bermuda and Cayman are both a bit tricky. They can't make up their minds if they are in or out. Legis 15:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
  • But isn't Cayman totally within the Caribbean Sea? I don't think there's any doubt that they are Caribbean.

New template[edit]

I have created the following template for the Caribbean, {{Caribbean topic}}. I would like comments regarding the locations I have included in the template. Turks and Caicos Islands[edit]

They have just undergone constitutional reform -- since the day before yesterday, their head of government is not Chief Minister any longer, but Premier instead... Does this also mean that T&CI status is at par with Bermuda's now, meaning they have the highest level of self-government possible? If so, the table and descriptions at British overseas territories should be adapted to that effect... —Nightstallion (?) 06:11, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Caribbean[edit]

I think Caribbean regions, Cities, States etc. Need to be developed more and have more information on them.

I also propose an Indo-Trinidadian Article (or possibly an Indo Caribbean article) and a Black Caribbean Article. User talk:Caribbean1Caribbean1 20:21, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Dominican Republic[edit]

The Dominican Republic article needs a good going over by a group of editors. It has some really poor prose, such as "about 70% of all Dominicans are mixed" - "The Dominican Republic is a Hispanic country, therefore, as with all Hispanic countries in the Americas, its culture and people is derived predominantly from Spain" - "Democracy is not something that is born overnight, it takes time to learn its rewards and even more importantly; tolerate its hardships" and on and on. I wonder if editors could take a moment to comb that article into better shape.--Zleitzen 11:01, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Proposed WikiProject[edit]

There is now a proposed WikiProject for the Caribbean area, including all the states and territories of the Caribbean, at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Caribbean. Interested parties should add their names there so we can determine if there is enough interest to start such a project in earnest. I note that there already are a few projects dealing with specific areas of the Caribbean, and this project has no intention of "horning on" on their territory, or that of any WikiProjects which may develop subsequently. However, I do think that even one very general project right now is better than none at all. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 17:00, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Trinbagonian nationalism[edit]

Essentially an essay about cultural identity in Trinidad and Tobago, it is comprised almost entirely of original research. None of the provided sources use the phrase "Trinbagonian nationalism", or even just "nationalism", and many seem to have very loose relationships with the claims that they supposedly support in the text. A google scholar search for "Trinbagonian nationalism" indicates that it's possible that a good article could be written on this topic with reliable sources, but it would require a complete rewrite from the current revision. signed, Rosguill talk 01:31, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

When they requested a peer-review for the article (here), they showed more than good intentions. We need more attention on these topics. Keep and rename. I completely agree with Den.... This is a notable and worthwhile article topic, albeit currently quite poorly-written and with an undesirable title plus a lack of encyclopaedia tone. Once improved (and its current essay-like state is no reason for deleting it) it should fill an important gap in this encyclopaedia. I have created a redirect to it from Nationalism in Trinidad and Tobago, and I hope it will be moved to that as its main title once this discussion is concluded. The subject of nationalism within Trinidad and Tobago appears to have been written about in a well-cited publication entitled Race and Nationalism in Trinidad and Tobago: A study of Decolonization in A Multiracial Society by Selwyn D. Ryan, 1972, as well as in the collaborative university website already cited in this article, as well as in this book. These alone ought to demonstrate that nationalism in these islands is an important encyclopaedic topic. But if the article creator can't swiftly fix these issues, then Onel5969's proposal to convert back to a draft for the time being is not at all an unreasonable one. Nick Moyes (talk) 01:40, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Strong Keep The pages cover clearly distinct tpoics. United States and state terrorism refers to US involvement with so-called state-terrorism; the use of torture, murder, and so forth by national governments that has the support of the US. The page being nominated here is about US support to paramilitary groups that have committed terrorist activities, as described by reliable sources. These activities were in/targeting countries typically unfriendly to the US, such as Cuba or pre-1973 Chile. There are plenty of RS covering this topic; take these, for example, which are both high-quality scholarly sources.[1][2] The nominator has made no edits outside AfD (itself very suspicious) but also has language strikingly similar to that of the account which opened the first AfD on this article. • Keep. I agree there are POV issues on the page - specifically lack of the rather wide refutations that many of these constituted terrorism. However, terrorism is a subjective measure and it is rather clear there is wide coverage of the claim that the US has been involved with or in relations with groups that are claimed to be terrorists by at least those who are opposed to said groups.Icewhiz (talk) 14:12, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

  • Keep Well-sourced article on a notable topic. State terrorism is terrorism by the state; state-sponsored terrorism is the state sponsoring terrorism by others. The two articles shouldn't be merged because the single article would be too long and difficult to navigate; they should refer to each, as they do currently. Any NPOV issues should be fixed through editing and expansion, not deletion.
