The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Name.ext}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions needs to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.

Photography workshop: Tagged requests
Above are image requests that anyone can help with. These images are chosen from cleanup categories located at Wikipedia and Commons.

The blue requests that say "Not taken yet " are not being worked on by anyone. If you would like to take a blue request, edit this page and locate the gallery with the requests. Type your username in the taken by= parameter of the thumbnail caption in the gallery (excluding "User:") and save the page.

Once you finish the request, upload it, remove any unnecessary cleanup notices from that file's page and edit this page again. If the image was uploaded over an older version, type "done" (in all lowercase) in the new file= parameter. If the file was uploaded with a new name, add the new file name into the new file= parameter. See {{Gl request}} documentation for more information.

An archive is kept of previous Anonymous requests. A log has users listed by number of requests fulfilled. Feel free to share suggestions for future Anonymous requests.

Sallie Partington
please reduce bleedthrough… -- Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 16:12, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

I spent some time working on that photo and I don't think that there is much that can be done to improve it unless there is an artist on Graphics Workshop that has the time and skill to essentially repaint it based on that photo. However, I did locate a much better photo (though smaller) of Sallie Partington that might be a good substitute. Carl Henderson (talk) 23:38, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Arundo donax[edit]

Arundo donax
I shot that pic last winter but I think it's too blurred to show in the article. Could someone skilled reduce all that blur?-- Carnby (talk) 21:39, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

@Carnby: A blurry picture is not really something that can be fixed. Your best option is to take another picture next chance you have or try to find alternative media someone else shot that has the proper license so that you can use it. You may want to check out the Arundo donax category on commons and see if any of those pictures will work for your needs. Offnfopt(talk) 00:52, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

I have uploaded another pic, slightly less blurred.--Carnby (talk) 18:33, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Battle of the Falkland Islands[edit]

Falkland Islands
Please remove the watermark in the lower right corner of the image. Also, I seem to be having some problems with oversaturation with images; I would appreciate it if this image could be checked for this issue. If possible, I would appreciate learning how I can tell if an image is oversaturated, what I may be doing wrong, and how I can self-correct oversaturation. Thanks! -- MarshalN20 Talk 14:18, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Also Yes check.svg Done by MG
Hi @MarshalN20, the histogram of your image shows two things:
  • The colors are not evenly distributed; this points to a color cast (in this case: blue).
  • The histogram curves reach the maximum or minimum values on the X axis and have yet a high intensity; this indicates overdriving channels.
With other words, the saturation is too high.
I do not know if the colors are correct in my attempt, but I have as far as possible eliminate these problems, as you see in the 2nd histogram.
Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 09:20, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Excellent! Thank you.--MarshalN20 Talk 14:06, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s)
Yes check.svg Done I am assuming you wanted the image to be square (it is not 300x300). If you wanted the medal to be distorted—or undistorted, as the case may be—I can do that, too. Just let me know.
Yeah, undistorted please, it looks like the top is the most squashed.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 14:22, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes check.svg Done Okay. I have fixed that; it is now as close to even on the vertical and horizontal as I can get it at that resolution. Carl Henderson (talk) 22:42, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you so much!--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 16:27, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Carly Fiorina
There's a weird shadow that looks like a spot between her left eye (on our right) and her nose. Is it okay to lighten it? If so, please also crop image so it can potentially go at the top of the article. Thanks. We're having some difficulty picking a stable image for the top of this article, so any suggestions would also be welcome. This person is a candidate for the U.S. presidency.-- Anythingyouwant (talk) 05:53, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
It looks like a natural, permanent 'blemish' that can be seen in other photos of Mrs Fiorina. I would strongly recommend against removing it. And as this isn't a particularly nice image I'd recommend using this one for the infobox. nagualdesign 06:32, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the advice and suggestion. Cheers.Anythingyouwant (talk) 06:41, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes check.svg Done Cropped for infobox and the shadow/blemish/whatever reduced. I looked at a number of high resolution photos on the web and the dark spot was in some, and not in others. Whether this is rampant photoshopping, make-up, or just a trick of the light on her features, I don't know. If you like this version better feel free to use it in the InfoBox. I think it is a slightly better photo overall. Carl Henderson (talk) 05:54, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I have added it to the gallery at the article talk page, Talk:Carly_Fiorina#Top_pic.Anythingyouwant (talk) 22:59, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I wasn't talking about that shadow at all, I meant the pimple to the left (her left) of her nose. nagualdesign 03:15, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Carly Fiorina at Northeast Republican Leadership Conference June 2015 Philadelphia PA by Michael Vadon 03.jpg

Any suggestions about how the quality might be improved?Anythingyouwant (talk) 18:38, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

How about that? A little saturation, a little sharpness, a little contrast. It's actually a very nice image to begin with, so there isn't much room for improvement. As always, revert if necessary. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 20:10, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the improvement. Cheers.Anythingyouwant (talk) 20:21, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
The image above is one-third podium. I would suggest a cropping for a close-up. Carl Henderson (talk) 18:57, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Never mind. I see that the actual article uses a cropped close-up already. Carl Henderson (talk) 19:01, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

2016 Presidential candidate Jack Fellure[edit]

Jack Fellure, Republican Party presidential candidates, 2016
This is the only free image currently available of Republican presidential candidate Jack Fellure. It is somewhat dark and blurry. I am hoping it can be lightened and enhanced. I would greatly appreciate any assistance on this matter. -- William S. Saturn (talk) 07:34, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
Yes check.svg Done Sort of. I lightened sections of the image, and applied an auto-contrast and unsharp mask filters. I think this new version is an mild improvement, but please note that with blurred image (especially a low resolution one) there is very little that can be done to make it less blurred. Carl Henderson (talk) 22:51, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. It is an improvement.--William S. Saturn (talk) 23:29, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Offnfopt(talk) 16:01, 7 July 2015 (UTC) Edit: I uploaded a new revision, check which one you prefer and revert if needed. The first upload I rotated to align the base of the building with the base of the image, the second revision I rotated without using the base of the building. Offnfopt(talk) 16:22, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm hoping this image will benefit from restoration to bring out the details a little better. Thanks. -- RO(talk) 19:07, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

Yes check.svg Done I did the following:

Reduced size to minimize compression artifacts.
Auto-tone and Auto-contrast filters applied.
Unsharp mask filter applied.
Please note that the original resolution was "fake" in that a highly compressed file has apparently been blown up, leading to a lot of compression artifacts visible in the photo.
This is the best I can do with the original. Carl Henderson (talk) 23:24, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
The original is from a 20-year-old New York library scan that I took a screenshot of, so you were working with total junk. Sorry about that, but it looks much better now. Thank you, Carl! RO(talk) 23:29, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done I removed the watermarks. However the original images are so degraded that there was very little I could to improve them, other than some clean-up of stray dots, remove some bleedthrough, and apply an unsharp mask. Carl Henderson (talk) 18:53, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

First edition of The Gorilla Hunters[edit]

1930s edition
The Gorilla Hunters
I need help on having the first edition (1861) of the novel uploaded. However, there is a background. I need someone who can turn the background into white. Or perhaps create a PNG image and JPEG image? Here's the link to the first edition: [4] -- George Ho (talk) 05:56, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)

Are you intending this to be a fair use photo? Because while it would be easy to take out the background, the composition of the original photo at the link is probably such that this would probably not pass on Wikipedia. My opinion. Carl Henderson (talk) 06:49, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

The book is out of copyright. The author died for more than 100 years, and the first edition was published in 1861. is So it should be considered public domain. Here's proof that the book is the first edition: [5]. Of course, there is another edition from 1874 ([6]); it's easy to upload. George Ho (talk) 07:04, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes, the book is clearly out of copyright. However, the photo of the book that you linked above is copyrighted. While photos of public domain images that are "slavish copies" of the original are not granted copyright protection under US law (see Bridgeman_Art_Library_v._Corel_Corp.), images that contain original composition elements are copyrightable (and copyrighted). This is especially true of images of three-dimensional objects (as is the case with the photo of the book you linked). See Wikipedia:Public_domain#Non-creative_works for more information. On the other hand, if you had a flat, face-on photo of just the cover of the 1st edition, that would be okay to reproduce here. Carl Henderson (talk) 05:05, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
All right, let's treat it as fair use then until I find the flat image of book cover. But the edition is rare, so finding it and scanning it have rare chances. In the meantime, the current fair use book cover is replaceable by first edition. --George Ho (talk) 05:43, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
See if this works for you [7] Carl Henderson (talk) 06:14, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Whoa! That's magnificent. How did you convert to flat image? I changed it to public domain. --George Ho (talk) 07:49, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s)

I don't think it can be done. Removing large multi-colored watermarks from an image is usually a matter of cloning similar image areas and outright redrawing in photoshop. That's not really possible with a handwritten document. Your best bet is to try to find a copy of the document from another source online, or in a physical book. Carl Henderson (talk) 01:35, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

This kind of watermark was successfully removed by @MagentaGreen: in the past so I hope he shows up to help. Thanks. Jaqeli 07:51, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
