Wikipedia:GLAM/UCNZ

This page records Wikimedia initiatives carried out by the University of Canterbury (Q432475). Projects were initiated by the New Zealand Wikipedian at Large, Giantflightlessbirds, during a residency May–June 2019. Giantflightlessbirds was hosted by the UC Arts Digital Lab.

Residential Red Zone

• To create: Residential Red Zone article. The article and item could be modelled on post-disaster spaces, or a project like Highline Park

Image uploads

• May 2019: Giantflightlessbirds met with representatives of the UC Comms team to discuss copyright isses and possible donations of images to Commons. These could include photos of campus buildings, and video of a public vigil following the Christchurch mosque shootings.

Copyright policy

Images in the University of Canterbury and Macmillan Brown Library Archives can fall under a range of copyright restrictions; the statement on the UC website that photographs there "may not be copied, distributed, or used for commercial purposes without the prior, express written permission of UC" is simply untrue; some of those images might be out of copyright or released under a Creative Commons licence that permits commercial use. This statement needs to be rectified, and accurate copyright and licensing statements displayed where required.

If an image copyrighted to UC (taken by a staff member or commissioned) is to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons a good licence would be Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY 4.0). Alternatively, images could be public domain/out of copyright in the USA (which is where Commons is hosted). If the image does not meet these requirements it should not be uploaded to Commons. "No known copyright restrictions" is not necessarily sufficient, nor is the image being out of copyright in New Zealand. Scanning a public domain image does not create a copyrighted work.

Wikimedia Commons has a public domain metadata template for New Zealand ({{PD-New Zealand}}), and one to indicate that a digital image is a faithful scan of a public-domain original ({{PD-scan}}). These should be used together when uploading a scan of a public domain image.

In the "Institution" field of any Commons upload of a collection item from the Museum, the {{Institution:University of Canterbury}} template should be used, to give a machine-readable attribution to the Museum.

The "Source" field should contain a URL, and that page should have a clear Creative Commons licensing statement. If the photo is not online, link to this project page and create an entry detailing the dates, usernames, and contact information of uploaders to enable Commons volunteers to verify that the upload is legitimate and not a copyright violation.
