Page on requested edit list without an edit request?[edit]

Why is Wikipedia_talk:Contact_us showing up at WP:SPER? I don't see {{edit semi-protected}} anywhere on the page. It might be a caching issue, but I don't see it in the history either. RudolfRed (talk) 01:01, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I only see Wikipedia talk:Contact us/blocked which redirects to Wikipedia talk:Contact us. Are you sure you saw Wikipedia talk:Contact us and not Wikipedia talk:Contact us/blocked? PrimeHunter (talk) 01:07, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oops. I didn't notice it redirected. I just clicked on the "request" link on the edit request page and then copied the page name when I asked my question. Thanks. RudolfRed (talk) 01:11, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re-use of content[edit]

Resolved

According to Wikipedia#Content_licensing can I copy paste a debate from my talk page to an article talk page without the other editors' consent as long as I redact their signitures if they request it? When the project was started in 2001, all text in Wikipedia was covered by GNU Free Documentation License later replaced with a CC license.--Canoe1967 (talk) 03:57, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for not answering your question, but isn't it much smarter to simply post a permalink on the talkpage? Arcandam (talk) 04:00, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. I don't know how yet. Could you revert my talk page and put the link to Talk:Gun laws in Colorado for me?--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:13, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done I am marking this thread as resolved, if you have any further questions you can respond on your talkpage, I have it watchlisted. Arcandam (talk) 04:34, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. Sorry if you got dragged into the mud on it though. I agree with resolved.--Canoe1967 (talk) 07:24, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Print bigger[edit]

How do I make the print bigger, I can't read it as it is so small — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fbiaggi (talkcontribs) 05:09, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure which browser you are using, but pressing Ctrl + makes text bigger in Firefox and Chrome. Arcandam (talk) 05:14, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Static IP redirect?[edit]

I have a static IP address assigned to me by my ISP, would it be in order for me to redirect the user/ talk page(s) to those of my account in-case I make edits and forget to login? I believe this would help in tracing and thus querying any edits made under the IP and allow me to be notified of any such comments without being logged out. --wintonian talk 05:12, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see now harm in it. On the re-direct page you may wish to make a note explaining it though?--Canoe1967 (talk) 07:21, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Its probably best to leave a comment containing a link on the talkpage of the IP. Arcandam (talk) 07:41, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I've soft redirected the talk page with a note and hard redirected the user page, I think that should be enough for people to work out what's going on. --wintonian talk 02:18, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Olympic rowing[edit]

Why, in rowing are the called "skulls" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.151.124.216 (talk) 11:08, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's sculls with c. See Sculling. wiktionary:scull#Etymology 1 says: "From Middle English sculle (“a type of oar”), Unknown".

Changing picture file name[edit]

County Cavan, Ireland

How do I change this "File:Ireland town 1860 census.jpg" file name to "1860 census County Cavan, Ireland.jpg"?--Doug Coldwell talk 12:06, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You need this user right. I have it and have moved the file for you this time. Rcsprinter (chat) @ 13:34, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! --Doug Coldwell talk 13:36, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

how do I print a map[edit]

how do i print a map — Preceding unsigned comment added by 23.24.224.78 (talk) 13:43, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Which map are you referring to? Arcandam (talk) 14:15, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My User Page[edit]

I can't add [[Category:Wikipedians who have opted out of automatic signing|{{PAGENAME}}]] to my user page because I don't have one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.57.130.3 (talkcontribs)

Why don't you want to sign posts like your question here in any way? It's annoying when there is no indication who made a post. I had to look in the page history to see you don't have an account (many users have an account but no user page). If you have no account then you cannot create a user page (though others can create it for you). You can add {{NoAutosign}} to your user talk page. Allow up to 5 minutes for it to take effect. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:25, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please see Wikipedia:Signatures for the relevant guideline. If you opt out of automatic signing and you do not diligently sign your talk page comments manually, it could become quite disruptive to regular discussion. BigNate37(T) 16:10, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is one of the advantages of having an account. If you want one, you'll have to get one, won't you? Britmax (talk) 17:58, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help PrimeHunter — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.57.130.3 (talkcontribs)

Mobivox[edit]

Hi, I have put the movivox support email address in and it clicked up with a positive. I cannot see that this email address, especially as it seems mobivox are not now in business, is a problem. Keep up the good work sorry if I have screwed up your system. Roger. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rogerinfrance (talkcontribs) 16:59, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think that your attempted edit was too informal for an encyclopedia article. But don't worry, you didn't break anything! I've left some introductory links on your talk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:11, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Louise de Vilmorin[edit]

I just want to add some info that is missing in the page for Louise de Vilmorin.

She wrote the dialogue for Louis Malle's film "Les Amants." 69.131.180.193 (talk) 17:09, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added it to the other films. They are just links in the see also section though. Someone may wish to turn that section into prose in the body of the article. Not my field but others may wish to.--Canoe1967 (talk) 10:41, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone help this user merge his three accounts?[edit]

Can you combine or merge my 3 user pages which are User_talk:Buffyfan84, User:Narwhalgal84 and User:Bulkbot84? That would help me alot. Bulkbot84 (talk) 17:55, 29 July 2012 (UTC) I moved this user's request for help from my talk page. μηδείς (talk) 18:07, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but please read our username policy. The 'bot' part of the Bulkbot84 username may be a problem. Arcandam (talk) 19:16, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My gut feeling is that this is a newbie acting in good faith, and unless you contact him with a solution on his talk page I suspect he will not know how to proceed. I am not an admin myself, so although I would help him, but I can't, I am washing my hands of this. μηδείς (talk) 02:34, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Accidentally wiped out references on "Kakuma" page[edit]

Because the full html is not exposed on the Wiki edit function, I appear to have wiped out the two "References"--aka footnotes--on the "Kakuma" page [1] when I cut and paste, trying to add another book as a reference--aka bibliography. Please advise how to restore the Egger's book and the info on the solar cookers to "Kakuma" References and list KAKUMA-TURKANA by Daniel Cheng Yang as Further Reading.

On "Lost Boys of Sudan" [2], a nearly similar problem. I added KAKUMA-TURKANA to References, but apparently need to create a Further Reading category and add it there, instead. Thanks. Bonnie Hayskar (talk) 18:40, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When you remove a {{reflist}} tag, that is what stops them from appearing. The actual content of the reference list is generated by the use of <ref> tags throughout the body of the article. Further details are available at Wikipedia:Citing sources, and you may wish to read Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. To fix Kakuma, or generally any time you accidentally damage an article, simply click the View history tab at the top, and you will be see your edit listed at the top. You may then revert your change if necessary (see Help:Reverting). If you want to add a general reference then using a <ref> tag is not ideal: WP:GENREF explains two ways to do that. If you have more questions or you want someone to fix Kakuma for you, please let us know. I'm just taking a look at Lost Boys of Sudan right now, too. BigNate37(T) 18:50, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Consider that our Manual of Style has recommendations on the way notes and references should be organized (see WP:FNNR). If an article utilizes {{reflist}} like Lost Boys of Sudan does, it's not only difficult but also counter-productive to move those cited references into a manual, general listing. BigNate37(T) 18:57, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I may need some help from Wiki on this. I did the undo, but there had been previous edits so now it does not allow me to undo and restore--only undo. What I need is for the original text to be restored, both on "Kakuma" and "Lost Boys of Sudan," to restore the footnotes (References). Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bonnie Hayskar (talkcontribs) 19:13, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your manual revert looks good now. (Note to others: I carried this discussion over to Bonnie's talk page, which wasn't the best organizational tactic, but just so you know.) BigNate37(T) 19:50, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Christian Bale[edit]

Please update the article, Christian Bale was born in Haverfordwest and therefore is not an English Actor he is clearly a Welsh Actor -please correct the site as soon as possible — Preceding unsigned comment added by Finlay0147 (talkcontribs) 20:17, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry, I hate nationalistic disputes. Arcandam (talk) 20:24, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please raise the issue on the article's talk page. Or, be bold and fix it yourself, if you can cite reliable sources to support your change. RudolfRed (talk) 20:25, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be bold in this case. You may get blocked if you do. Arcandam (talk) 20:40, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This prompted me to browse WP:MOS for a relevant guiding principle, and I couldn't find anything. Do we have guidelines covering this type of distinction, particularly regarding nationalism within Great Britain? Note that I'm not asking what should be done specifically, just where the guidelines are, if any. BigNate37(T) 20:29, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems that in this instance, WP:UKNATIONALS#Present-day_UK_nationality_.28examples_of_use.29 is the closest we come to a guideline. BigNate37(T) 23:15, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can't comment on how Wikipedia handles this, but it was my understanding that while he was born in Wales, he was brought up in England and considers himself English - I can't imagine there're any guidelines for specifically this situation - editors will just have to reach a consensus, which there seems to be in this case per Talk:Christian Bale#Wales is not England. So I'd not edit the article just yet, I recommend discussing it on the talk page as long as past discussions don't clear up the matter for you already. Яehevkor 20:36, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, this person is trying to reopen a can of worms. Arcandam (talk) 20:38, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong entry on the List of Cities in the Philippines[edit]

On the list of Cities in the Philippines, there were two entries of Tagum City... and there was no Davao City. You may want to correct the list. Thanks a lot.

PaulM — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.198.90.234 (talk) 20:31, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the "extra" Tagum city. I am not sure if I can help with Davao City, gimme a sec. Arcandam (talk) 20:43, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

USS Philippine Sea CVA-47 Article[edit]

Just read the article and there is one (1) minor error regarding her departure from San Diego on 5 July 1950. She did not depart with four (4) Corisair squadrons. CAG11 consisted of two (2) F9F squadrons (VF-111 & 112), two (2) Corisair squadrons (VF-113 & VF-114) and one (1) squadron of ADs (VF-115). I know this for a fact as I was onboard VF-114 as we steamed passed Point Loma on our way to Pearl. Harry Matthews — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.180.238.23 (talk) 21:36, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your own knowledge is not sufficient. You need to find a reliable source stating what you said, assuming you can find one. One way to go about this, if you can't find one, is to convince a reporter to interview you, and if the newspaper or TV station or whatever trusts you are telling the truth, you can use the story as a reference.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:04, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
