Events related to the Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects at CitSciHelvetia[edit]

  • Impact-oriented Citizen Science: The role of Wikipedia, Wikidata and OpenStreetMap, Iolanda Pensa (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, Haute école spécialisée de la Suisse italienneWorkshop), Daniel Mietchen (Ronin Institute, Montclair, New Jersey, United States) and Diego Haettenschwiler (Wikipedian), III, Salle de workshop 1, auberge de jeunesse, Wednesday 29 March 2023, h 14h00–15h30.
Wikipedia, Wikidata and OpenStreetMap are existing Citizen Science tools, structured to allow measuring, evaluating, planning and communicating the impact of citizens’ contribution and the effects of open research. Wikidata, Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap are the largest participatory open and multilingual projects ever created. They activate communities, they use Open Science, they produce content, data and infrastructures, which are available to anyone (20 billion views per month and reused for services and products); furthermore they are huge repositories that document edits, references, uploads and participatory dynamics. This workshop presents and discusses strategies to rely on Wikipedia, Wikidata and OpenStreetMap to trigger impact-oriented Citizen Science and to assess it through information design.
  • Citizien Scientists – Wiki Scientist. Christian Erlinger (Bibliothèque centrale et universitaire de Lucerne), Dialogue Session Säulenhalle, 30 March 2023, h 12h15–13h45.
The Wiki*Versum - as a sum of all wiki projects under the patronage of the Wikimedia Foundation like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource and similar - is one of the most successful example of common scientific and open civic engagement of the last 20 years. Nevertheless, for many Citizen Scientists in terms of their own research work is not clear how these wikis can be used for one's own work. The traceability and measurability of the contributions when participating in these formats allow the effectiveness and the recognizability of the commitments. Let's discuss together experiences related to Wikis in and for Citizen Science. Good examples, suggestions, tips or simply new questions.
  • Meetup in Solothurn.
