Topics of discussion[edit]

Minutes of meeting[edit]

  • The presenters emphasized that they were not trainers and the attendees were not trainees. The meetup was intended to be more like a kind of sharing session between the presenters (whom probably were more 'nerd' of having played around Wikipedia since ages ago) and the attendees (newbie Wikipedia editors) on friend-to-friend basis ;)
  • Introduction of Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia and its history
  • Overview briefing of Wikimedia projects, especially on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata
  • Overview of Wikimedia Foundation (HQ location, total annual funding) and various Wikimedia international conferences
  • Overview of Wikipedia article components (article title, lead section, infobox, body, references, categories, interlinking to Wikimedia Commons and talk pages)
  • Overview of navigating around Wikipedia articles (navbox, template, categories, different languages of Wikipedia for that article)
  • Overview of navigation around Wikimedia Commons (navbox, categories) and showing various category of photos within the platform, including a collection of anime and cosplay conventions-related photos around Malaysia, to show that we Wikipedians are not always the book-nerd kind of people. Cosplayers, engineers and animators can also be Wikipedia editors :)
  • Interlinking between articles of facts in Wikipedia (e.g. height of Petronas Twin Towers) or with other highly technical terminologies (e.g. mechanical engineering-related terms)
  • Creating Wikipedia usernames and playing around with sandbox
  • Uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons and its categorization, including what are the photos eligible to be uploaded to the platform (from original author's camera upload or Flickr photos with tag stating that the photo can be edited and modified only)
  • Overview of Wikidata on its contents (including identifies) and interlinking to all related Wikimedia project pages for an entity
  • Notability of a subject before having its Wikipedia article or Wikidata entry
  • The importance of proper documentation of everything and having third-party sources for improving notability of a subject
  • Introduction to WikiProject, especially WikiProject Malaysia
  • Introduction of Wikipedia for one full semester university course
  • Using Wikipedia for academic research, continuous professional development and paper publications
  • Possibilities of translating between different languages of Wikipedia of a particular article while maintaining the list of references to be up-to-date or to archive them in the event of dead links
  • Adding technical-related content (within subheading) to any existing Wikipedia article
  • Navigating Malaysia-related stub articles for ideas on what articles to expand
  • Request for having Tamil-speaking (and writer) editor for Wikimedia Malaysia user group
  • Discussion on having Wikipedia Student Club (or Department under existing student club or any event) of the University of Malaya
  • Discussion on future Wikipedia meetups in January 2022 before WikiGap in March 2022 (in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Kuala Lumpur) for being better prepared for the event
  • Discussion of having University of Malaya as the host for future Wikimania Conference
  • Introduction of Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia social media (Facebook group and Facebook page)
