Event format[edit]

Panel B: Education

Participation (and pizza and cake!) will be free, with room for ~100 participants, who should bring a photo ID for the door. All are welcome, and we are especially interested in seeing newcomers to join the experienced Wikipedians/Wikimedians. We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from cultural institutions interested in developing Open Education projects.

In addition to the party, the event will be a modified unconference, with dedicated plenary sessions (organized on this wiki), lightning talks to the whole assembly, and of course open space sessions. The Lightning Talks and Open Space will be determined during the event itself, so it will be good to bring your ideas with you.

There is wifi access, and we will give you the log in details on-site. Projectors will also probably be available for use by the various presenters.

Schedule of sessions (tentative)[edit]

The event will be a modified unconference, with dedicated plenary sessions (organized on this wiki), lightning talks to the whole assembly, and of course open space sessions. The Lightning Talks and Open Space will be determined during the event itself, so it will be good to bring your ideas with you.

Topics discussed in greater or lesser detail
    • Installation and maintenance of MediaWiki, hosting services offering out-of-the-box wikis
    • Getting templates into fresh wiki installations
    • Semantic MediaWiki vs. Wikibase
    • Using Wikidata with stand-alone wikis
    • Merging datasets into Wikidata (while avoiding duplicates)
    Main Conclusions
    • Developed the idea that there should be a “core set” of (most popular? most expected?) templates (automatically) derivable from the (here understood: English) Wikipedia with which to seed new MediaWiki installations
    • Concluded that the Wikidata UI, especially on query.wikidata.org, still needs a lot of work
