The discussion about merging at the village pump is now archived (here). The vast majority of those who expressed an opinion considered the system based on the current templates and this process (Wikipedia:Proposed mergers) to be inadequate.

The implementation of a new automated system is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Merge/Archive 2#Automation of merge proposals. More participation in that discussion is welcome.

This page lists proposed article mergers as a supplement to the merge categories and templates; it is meant for discussing possible mergers and does not replace any of the other steps in the merger process. Please add the appropriate merger tag(s) to the articles before listing them here.

How to propose a merger[edit]

Main page: Help:Merging

There are three types of mergers on Wikipedia:

  1. ) mergers that are so obviously necessary and appropriate that no one is expected to object;
  2. ) mergers that would benefit from discussion with the other editors at the affected articles' Talk page about whether and/or how to perform the merge; and
  3. ) mergers that are either controversial or potentially difficult to carry out, and therefore need assistance from uninvolved editors in determining whether to merge the pages.

If the pages that you would like to merge fall into the type 1 group, then it is not necessary to propose a merger at all. You should boldly do the merger now, without formally proposing it. (In the event that someone unexpectedly objects, then the merger can be undone easily, and you can formally propose the merger for discussion at that time.)

If the merge falls into the type 2 group or type 3 group, or a formal discussion is needed or wanted, then proposing a merger can be done in three steps (as the proposer, you should still be willing to carry-out the merger in a type 2 article):

  • Step 1: Create a place for discussion. Go to the Talk Page (also known as the discussion page) of the TARGET ARTICLE (the one you want to merge to) and create a section (eg: "Merger proposal") to discuss the merger. If there's already a discussion on the talk page regarding the merger, you can omit this step. Whether the discussion is new or old, make sure the discussion section names all articles involved and links to them. The section name can be anything that includes the word merge (for example ==Merger Discussion==).
  • Step 2: Put one of the merger tags at the top of the articles you wish to be merged. The templates {{Merge from}} and {{Merge to}}, or {{merge}} are the most common ones. Remember to make sure that the Discuss link in each tag points to the section you've created in step 1 (this is to prevent having two separate discussions on different talk pages).
  • Step 3: If the proposed merge is controversial or potentially difficult to carry out, follow the directions under #Requests for merge assistance and feedback to add it to the list.
See: Copy and Paste easy merge templates for easy to follow shortcuts of the above procedure.

Many bold mergers are performed each day. Of the mergers that are formally proposed, about 95% fall into the second category, of wanting discussion or practical assistance from the editors at the articles that are to be merged. The remaining 5% of formally proposed mergers are on contentious topics or are controversial for one reason or another. Only this small fraction is listed at the bottom of this page as instructed in step #3.

Requests for merge assistance and feedback[edit]

If you need outside feedback regarding mergers that are either tricky or of a controversial nature, please do the following:

  • Tag the article as shown above
  • Create a discussion as shown above
  • Notify the talk page of the appropriate Wikiproject to get knowledgeable people to comment on it. (To find out which Wikiproject the page is associated with, check the associated talk page. It should be tagged with a template, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey.)
  • If there is consensus to merge, but the merge is difficult, contact Wikipedia:WikiProject Merge for assistance.

For other topics:

  • If you need help with renaming or moving, consult Help:Moving a page.
  • Cut-and-paste move fixes: If you have merged an article by this method, then you need to request page histories to be merged; list them at requests for history merge. Please DO NOT perform further moves by cut and paste.

NOTE: Do not Post Here if You are Not Willing to do the Merge Yourself. We will provide you assistance in how to complete the merge if you are unsure how to do it. -Project Merge
NOTE: Please do not re-list old merge proposals that are already tagged and in the "to Merge" queue (including requests made up to two years ago), as these will be handled as we get to them. -Project Merge

MERGE REQUESTS[edit]

New requests[edit]

If you need assistance with proposing a merge, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the merge completed, as there is a large merge backlog. Once a merge is listed properly, move it to the "Completed requests" or "Awaiting consensus" sections below as appropriate.

Please list new requests at the bottom of this section. Use the Edit Summary and list at least a link to the article to be redirected. Please legitimize your request by signing each listing or comment by typing four tildes (~~~~):

______

Awaiting consensus[edit]

Once all involved articles are tagged, request should be added here. This section can also be used if a proposal needs further discussion due to age or disagreement. All comments should be directed to the Discussion Page, not here. We will attempt to get more people to comment on it.

Only comment so far supports merging. Nominator or someone knowledgeable about subject should proceed with the merge. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 17:15, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Merge List of military occupations into List of territorial disputes. >>>Discussion<<<. The lists are fundamentally the same, but the first is essentially a platform for editors with strong points of view about particular conflicts to cast one or another side of a conflict in a negative light. See the talk page for typical discussions among partisan editors. The merge is likely to be contested by these partisan editors, as "List of territorial disputes" is a much more neutral (and more accurate) description of the conflicts listed. --Ravpapa (talk) 17:10, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Current discussion leans to not merge these two articles. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 23:35, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

  • Comment: with the use of sortable lists, there should be little opposition to this proposal, due to duplication of content. Proposer, or someone interested, should feel free to boldly merge. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 23:35, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

  • I would propose a rapid merger of Unique visitor and into Unique user, as the larger, more detailed of the two (Uu) states repeatedly that the two are synonymous, and the smaller of the two articles (Uv) is very short and based on a single source. Transfer of the content should be fast and simple, with addition of a sentence that Uu is (it appears) more often used my the coding communities, and Uv by business/marketing individuals. >>>Discussion Here<<<. • Myoui Mina should be merged into Twice. Myoui is not notable on her own and the discussion in the talk page seems limited to just me and two users who appear to have created accounts solely to work on this page. Articles are tagged but discussion needs input from more experienced contributors. >>>Discussion Here<<< Katzenlibrary (talk) 23:51, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

  • Merge City and Colour into Dallas Green (musician). >>Join Discussion. On the City and Colour article currently states in the first sentence that the article is about a recording alias belonging to Dallas Green . It also states the only band member in the associated project is Dallas Green himself. The member list after him is separate and designated "other back up". In its current state a merge is entirely appropriate. --Wudumindif (talk) 00:53, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

  • Knedle (created in 2007) and Plum dumplings (created in 2013, as "Szilvásgombóc") have the same subject, that should go under the descriptive, English name, Plum dumplings. Thus, merge content from the latter into Knedle, then move it to Plum dumplings, and make sure to unite the wikidata.--Zoupan 21:09, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
