The Turgot map of Paris is a highly accurate and detailed map of the city of Paris as it appeared in 1734–1736. The atlas consists of 20 non-overlapping sectional bird's-eye view maps (at a scale of approximately 1/400) and one simplified general map with a 4 by 5 grid showing the layout of the 20 sectional maps. It has been described as "the first all-comprising graphical inventory of the [French] capital, down to the last orchard and tree, detailing every house and naming even the most modest cul-de-sac". Seen here is the map in its assembled form. Cartography credit: Louis Bretez; engraving credit Claude Lucas

This vignette appeared on a US $50 banknote in 1875. The engraving copies Robert Walter Weir’s painting Embarkation of the Pilgrims, one of eight historical paintings hanging in the rotunda of the United States Capitol. It depicts the Pilgrims on the deck of the ship Speedwell as they depart Delfshaven in South Holland on July 22, 1620. They sailed to Southampton where they met additional colonists and transferred to the Mayflower. Engraving credit: W. W. Rice, Bureau of Engraving and Printing; restored by Andrew Shiva
