This historical coat of arms of the State of Wisconsin was engraved by Henry Mitchell, an engraver at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, in 1876 and adopted by the state. The central part of the design depicts the changing focus of the economy of the territory from fur trading to lead and iron mining, agriculture, manufacturing and shipping (via the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River). The badger at the top refers to the territory being known as the "Badger State", a nickname given because some newly-arrived miners found shelter in the holes they had dug. The cornucopias at the bottom represent prosperity and abundance, and the thirteen lead ingots, represent mineral wealth and the original thirteen United States. Engraving credit: Henry Mitchell; restored by Godot13
