- Template:Talk page of disambiguation page (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
- Template:WikiProject Disambiguation (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Propose merging Template:Talk page of disambiguation page with Template:WikiProject Disambiguation.
Both templates serve a similar purpose (namely, to tag talk pages of disambiguation pages), so I see no reason why both templates should exist. Also, both templates already categorize talk pages into Category:WikiProject Disambiguation pages anyway. GTrang (talk) 14:54, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- Disambiguation pages are automatically detected by {{WikiProject banner shell}}, so another possibility is merging into that template — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:57, 2 July 2025 (UTC)
- Template:Talk page of disambiguation page currently has only 34 transclusions and Template:WikiProject Disambiguation has approximately 342,000 pages. I support getting rid of Template:Talk page of disambiguation page and replacing all usages of it with Template:WikiProject Disambiguation. Adumbrativus (talk) 03:04, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per suggestion - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 23:09, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge as proposed. There's no reason to impose the overhead of
{{WikiProject banner shell}}; its purpose is as a wrapper around wikiproject banner templates. In any cases in which there are not going to be at least two project banners [or equivalent templates also supported by WPBS] to be "shelled", the fact that WPBS can kinda do what{{WikiProject Disambiguation}}does seems irrelevant. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 10:51, 3 July 2025 (UTC)- Merge per above argument by SMcCandlish Easternsahara (talk) 21:23, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
cases in which there are not going to be at least two project banners [or equivalent templates also supported by WPBS] to be "shelled"
: {{WPBS}} is used even when there is a single banner or no banner at all since implementation of WP:PIQA in 2022, and it is being actively maintained by Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Cewbot 12 and previously by Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Qwerfjkl (bot) 26. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 21:40, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge both into the Banner shell. WikiProject Disambiguation templates should not have to be manually added, as it is relatively easy to autodetect whether a page is a disambiguation. One major downside of it not being part of the Banner shell not mentioned thus far is that it has to be manually removed if a disambiguation page is redirected or otherwise changed, rather than auto-updating to its new status. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 16:05, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- WikiProjects are groups of editors, not technical classifications for pages. They can and should tag any pages that they volunteer to support, including pages that aren't dab pages. Manual tagging is the only way to know whether the group chooses to support those pages, as they are not required to set their WP:PROJSCOPE to include every dab page, and they are permitted (and do) support pages that aren't dab pages (e.g., the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages guideline). WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:11, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom and SMcCandlish. I also do not object to merging both into {{WPBS}} if {{WPBS}} includes adding the appropriate disambiguation categories. Justjourney (talk | contribs) 21:57, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge with Template:WikiProject Disambiguation: per nom and SMcCandlish. The WP banner already covers the technical aspect of this template and is fairly clear to understand. This is different from {{Talk page of a redirect}}, which actually points to the target talk page, whereas this is mainly just a notice and tracking temp already covered by the WP one. — Trailblazer101🔥 (discuss · contribs) 00:50, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} is used on pages that are not disambiguation pages, like any other WPP template, it is used tagging pages within WikiProject Disambiguation. They should be used separately. Disambiguation pages should be converted to {{Talk page of disambiguation page}}, and {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} left to tag pages of the WikiProject itself. Much like how {{WikiProject Redirect}} does not appear on the talk pages of redirects which instead uses {{talk page of redirect}} and {{WikiProject Categories}} does not appear on the talk pages of categories. While a few may be tagged with the project banner, the vast majority of disambiguation pages should not get tagged with the project banner, much as the situation with redirects, where only a few redirects directly related to the project are tagged. -- 65.93.183.249 (talk) 03:14, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
- I feel like what the scope of the WikiProject is should not be determined by this TfD. I try to tag most DABs I come across and work on with the DAB WP and any other relevant WPs for tracking purposes which are not necessarily aided by this talk page template. It just mimics the redirect temp wording without actual substance, and if there are any discussions at a DAB talk, they would use {{Talk header}} which covers more bases. This temp assumes most DABs are not heavily watched, but the entire WikiProject focused on DABs proves otherwise. — Trailblazer101🔥 (discuss · contribs) 03:46, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
- That can be solved by rewording the {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} template. And isn't tracking achieved with the footer templates? {{disambiguation}} / {{geodis}} etc, that categorize the pages into disambiguation page categories? There is a very big notice at Template:WikiProject Disambiguation/doc that states Please do not use this template solely to create talk pages that otherwise have no content. which would mean that the WikiProject template should not be used to tag disambiguation pages; as most such pages would have redlink talk pages -- 65.93.183.181 (talk) 10:31, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
- The scope of a WikiProject cannot be determined by any TFD/MFD/decision by others, because according to the WP:PROJSCOPE guideline, the editors in a group have sole and exclusive right to decide which pages they choose to support. The impossibility of changing this should make sense to anybody who reflects for a moment on what it means to be a WP:VOLUNTEER. WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:14, 12 July 2025 (UTC)

- The 34-transclusion template really doesn't matter compared to the other one. Its content only has one extra sentence which warns against using barely watched Talk pages. This is why we have WP Disambiguation tagging - so that RMs proposed there automatically appear on article alerts where people are watching. The documentation for the other template says it should never be the only thing on the Talk page of disambiguation page, which means it's mostly useless anyway. The alerting facility currently provided by WP Disambiguation tags needs to be maintained. If someone wants to volunteer the work needed to implement it automatically in the banner shell or wherever, and replace it automatically, that's fine, but it's largely orthogonal to the idea of dealing with the barely used template which triggered this TfD. History seems to indicate this was basically a failed experiment, and it was partially reverted once already. This all strikes me as making of a mountain out of a molehill. --Joy (talk) 13:30, 5 July 2025 (UTC)

- Merge per nom, and also support merging of the templates into the banner shell for articles, etc. However, I can see the need for a template to identify talk pages belonging to Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation, and {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} could be repurposed to be solely for that. Might warrant a discussion beyond here though. -Kj cheetham (talk) 10:20, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- To clarify, I mean I support merging of Template:Talk page of disambiguation page into {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} or the banner shell, not {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} into the banner shell. Also no objections to Template:Talk page of disambiguation page just being deleted. -Kj cheetham (talk) 10:04, 12 July 2025 (UTC)
- 'Merge {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} per nom. Article alerts for WikiProject Disambiguation are populated both by the WikiProject banner and by presence of Category:All disambiguation pages (see configuration). I can see relevant move requests slipping through the crack of article alerts (e.g. when it is proposed to turn an existing title into a dab page, with no pre-existing dab), I don't think the WikiProject banner is needed in article space for the purpose of article alerts; article alerts picks dabs up from the category even when the banner is not present. However, I do think there is some use for {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} in tagging meta pages (categories/templates/project) the same way {{WikiProject Redirect}} is used. Plantdrew (talk) 20:34, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Merge Template:Talk page of disambiguation page into Template:WikiProject Disambiguation. Oppose merging in the other direction. Template:Talk page of disambiguation page is only used on about ten article talk pages. Talk pages of disambiguation pages are not like talk pages of redirects and don't need a separate talk page banner header just because they are disambiguation pages. As discussions take place on the talk page, not elsewhere, a Talk header is sufficient. The WikiProject banner shell already recognises if a page is a disambiguation page, so an extra banner on the talk page uses aditional space unnecessarily and provides no additional value, as it is simply cosmetic. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 12:24, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- Strong oppose to merging {{WikiProject Disambiguation}} with anything: There is a fundamental misunderstanding about the role of a WikiProject banner here. It is a banner for the "WikiProject", not a tag for disambiguation pages. It goes on anything that is related to the WikiProject's mission, such as guidelines on dabs, essays on dabs, templates made for dabs, categories created to organise dabs, just like any other WikiProject banner. Moreover, WikiProject banners are always collapsed and always go inside {{WPBS}} since a 2022 RfC. The purpose of {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} is to warn editors that the page has few watchers. Hiding it in a collapsed banner, itself within WPBS, will not help in this, no one will ever read it, it will be better to simply delete {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} than doing this.
Weak support merging {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} to {{WikiProject banner shell}}: The latter already detects dabs for quality assessment, it could manage to automatically display the appropriate message on dab talk pages, without needing specific tagging.
Support merging {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} to {{Talk header}}: Talk header doesn't currently identify a dab afaik, but the functionality could be added easily. It would be a much better template to give a "few watchers" warning to visitors. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 21:58, 10 July 2025 (UTC) [Edited significantly: —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 21:27, 11 July 2025 (UTC)]- Please no - not every talk page has {{talk header}} and I would not like to start mass-adding it — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:09, 11 July 2025 (UTC)
- {{Talk page of disambiguation page}} is only transcluded on
3410 pages, and no one has proposed that it should be put on the talk page of every dab, so even if merged, {{talk header}} would not need to be mass-added. And if there is a proposal that every dab talk should have this message then I'm fine with a merge with WPBS instead. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 22:15, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

- Oppose merge. Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation is every bit as much a Wikipedia:WikiProject as any other, and that group of editors has nothing to do with someone's advice about posting elsewhere if you have a question. (Really: How many of us would vote to merge {{WikiProject Video games}} with a banner that says "This is the talk page for an article about a video game. It may not be frequently watched"? And yet that is exactly what is being proposed here.) To the people who are proposing a merge, do you really think it would be a good idea for "This is the talk page of a disambiguation page, which is a non-article that lists actual articles with similar names. This page may not be frequently watched" to be posted at the top of Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation? It's not the talk page of a dab page, it doesn't list actual articles, and it is frequently watched, but it is a non-article, so 1 point out of 4, which is a big fat F on the grade sheet.I'd be fine with just deleting {{Talk page of disambiguation page}}, since we don't really need it. It's only on 10 article Talk: pages, and those 10 are also tagged by the WikiProject. If it's kept, then it shouldn't be adding Category:WikiProject Disambiguation pages. - Get rid of
{{Talk page of disambiguation page}}. It has exactly 11 transclusion in the Talk: namespace, and all of the pages that contain this template also have the WikiProject banner as well, so this template should just be manually removed from the 11 pages where it exists. The WikiProject Disambiguation banner is fine as is, as a mark of the WikiProject that these pages fall under. Utopes (talk / cont) 02:54, 16 July 2025 (UTC) - Snow Oppose since when do we merge project templates with a non-project templates? P.S. AFAIK, we're not even meant to add the project template to talk pages of dabs, so I'm a bit concerned that there's a misunderstanding here, and I would advise wider project discussion.
