Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball/MLB team season articles format

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page is a guide to creating a season article for a Major League Baseball team. This includes the basic information that should be included, though feel free to add other information as you desire.

Article name[edit]

From Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball/Style advice#Teams: follow the format <year> <team article name> season, so that the Infobox MLB yearly template can automatically generate links to the next and previous seasons. Example: 1882 Cincinnati Red Stockings season

Infobox[edit]

Be sure to add an infobox at the start of the article. You can use the following code to produce one:

For example

will produce:

2007 New York Yankees

BallparkYankee Stadium
CityNew York City, New York

RadioWCBS (AM)
← 2006 Seasons 2008 →
  • For the articles, for logo and Uniform logo, get the logos from the team's website. Per Wikipedia policy, those logos could not be included on this subpage.

Offseason[edit]

Description of events that took place between the end of the last season and the start of the new one.

Spring training[edit]

Description of key facts from spring training. The games themselves are usually not important so a gamelog is not necessary.

Regular season[edit]

Season standings[edit]

Season standings all have templates created. All you need to do is add the right division's template into this section. The following are the templates:

For example adding

will show

AL East W L Pct. GB Home Road
Boston Red Sox 96 66 0.593 51–30 45–36
New York Yankees 94 68 0.580 2 52–29 42–39
Toronto Blue Jays 83 79 0.512 13 49–32 34–47
Baltimore Orioles 69 93 0.426 27 35–46 34–47
Tampa Bay Devil Rays 66 96 0.407 30 37–44 29–52

Adding these templates helps make sure that each article has information that is the same as the rest in their division, all that needs to be done is having the template up to date, instead of 4-6 articles.

Game log[edit]

When creating a game log, use the following code:

|-
MLB game log section end
MLB game log end

With the above code,

  • year = The year of the season.
  • month = The month of the season of which the game log is representing. If for postseason, insert the round using section (AL/NLDS, AL/NLCS, World Series).
  • # = Game number.
  • Date = Date game is played, only use month and day, year is not needed.
  • Opponent = The name of the opponent (Angels, Dodgers, etc.).
  • Score = The final score.
  • Win = The pitcher who was given the win.
  • Loss = The pitcher who was given the loss.
  • Save = The pitcher who received the save. If none, leave blank.
    • For Win, Loss, and Save: Bold the pitcher of the team whose article it is
  • Attendance = The attendance of the game.
  • Record = The teams record as of that game for the season (or series if postseason).

For example, the following code is the New York Yankees in the Division Series of 2006.

|- style="text-align: center; background-color: #bfb"
| 1 || October 3 || Tigers || 8–4 || Wang || Robertson || || 56,291 || 1–0
|- style="text-align: center; background-color: #bbb"
| || October 4 || Tigers || colspan=6 |Postponed (rain)
|- style="text-align: center; background-color: #fbb"
| 2 || October 5 || Tigers || 4–3 || Walker || Mussina || Jones || 56,252 || 1–1
|- style="text-align: center; background-color: #fbb"
| 3 || October 6 || @ Tigers || 0–6 || Rogers || Johnson || || 43,440 || 1–2
|- style="text-align: center; background-color: #fbb"
| 4 || October 7 || @ Tigers || 3–8 || Bonderman || Wright || || 43,126 || 1–3
MLB game log section end
MLB game log end

Will produce:

1 October 3 Tigers 8–4 Wang Robertson 56,291 1–0

  • When put into the team article, this box should collapse.

Current roster[edit]

This should be the team roster template during the season. After the season is over should be renamed as (Year) roster and replaced with a roster that shows all the players that played for the team during the season.
