Description

Let's improve pages associated with Maker culture, Hacker Culture, and Hackerspaces. They seem a little out of date and potentially misleading, despite getting hundreds to thousands of views each day. Let's improve these pages and make more. Wiki blanko (talk) 11:43, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
Maker and Hacker movements and culture are multi-disciplinary and distinct from these existing groups. At present, none of these groups are paying these pages enough attention. Many have lapsed

  2. Conceptually support, with scope clarification, and not at this vague name. I agree with the criticism below regarding the name, but am not convinced at all by the topical argument made there. The 3D-printer, open-hardware, and related tech scene is mediated and enabled by the Internet (as is everything today), but not intrinsically "of" it, the way that, say, blogging is. You don't make (in this sense) stuff on the Internet, any more than you eat dinner via cable modem. I think there is in fact a viable wikiproject here, though it could start out as a taskforce/workgroup of another one, such as the suggested WikiProject Internet Culture. The real problem with the nomination is that it's included things like Hacker culture, Open source, etc., that are not closely tied to the "maker" scene (though it is dependent on them), and may pre-date it by decades. And it doesn't include really obvious stuff that it should, like Arduino, 3D printer, Open-source hardware (a much later concept that open-source software), etc. The nom has focused exclusively on the "webboards and their people" aspect of the topic, but isn't actually terribly important; the making is what matters, not how the maker scene communicates. I don't dispute that even Hacker culture's talk page could have this would-be project's banner on it as (barely) nominally within scope, but listing it in this nomination while omitting much, much more pertinent topics is not a selling point. "Making" is too vague a name. Maybe "Amateur Engineering & Technology" or "Independent Engineering & Technology" or something along those lines.--occono (talk) 21:26, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Those would be overbroad for the stated focus, though it's not a bad idea as a scope expansion, since that broader topic would go back centuries, and just include the modern "maker" scene as a subtopic.
