Rating reassessment needed

An article rating and assessment scheme has been implemented for Hawaii-related articles, which is monitored and maintained by WikiProject Hawaii. In this scheme, all Hawaii-related articles ('article' here also includes lists) may be assigned a particular rating which indicates an assessment of their class (overall quality).

The primary purpose of this rating and assessment scheme is to provide editors with a sub-categorised survey of the current status of Hawaii-related articles, which can then be used to prioritise the overall workload and highlight articles needing improvements at various stages.

For example, lower-quality articles in need of most work can be readily identified for attention and collaboration.

There will be a number of secondary benefits from the scheme, such as being able to track which kinds and topics of articles are 'neglected'.

This assessment and rating scheme follows the precepts adopted by the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, see Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment and Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Work via Wikiprojects for details.

The class ratings are recorded by setting appropriate values to the parameters of the main WP:HAWAII Project banner, {{WikiProject Hawaii}} which are placed on the corresponding talk pages of articles about Hawaii or other closely related topics. See the template instructions for details on these and other parameters which can be set.

See the Quality scale for guideline criteria for rating an article by class/quality.

The assessments of class are assigned manually by WP:HAWAII project members (or other interested parties)– see the Rating instructions for details. Assigning a rating will automatically place the article in an appropriate rating category.

Once assigned, behind the scenes a bot (Mathbot (talk · contribs)) runs periodically (scheduled daily, about 0300hrs UTC) which compiles a variety of statistics and log data, which can then later be analysed.

It is expected that this rating and assessment scheme will require periodic and iterative maintenance, as new articles are created or identified, and existing articles are progressively improved (or, hopefully much rarer, demoted), requiring the status to be reassessed (indicated by changing the parameter value).

Of course, anyone is free to edit any of the articles they choose, however it is hoped that this will provide some basis for a more methodical approach to the longer-term overall improvement of content and coverage of Hawaii-related content.

An article's assessment is recorded via the use of certain parameters of the {{WikiProject Hawaii}} project banner, which is affixed to the talk pages of in-scope articles. Note that there are some other (optional) parameters to the project banners as well, see Template:WikiProject Hawaii/doc for a full description.

An article's quality assessment is generated from the class parameter in the {{WikiProject Hawaii}} project banner on its talk page:

{{WikiProject Hawaii|class=???}}

The following values may be used for the class parameter to describe the quality of the article (see Wikipedia:Quality scale for assessment criteria):

FA (for featured articles only; adds articles to Category:FA-Class Hawaii articles) Featured article FA
A (adds articles to Category:A-Class Hawaii articles) A-Class article A
GA (for good articles only; adds articles to Category:GA-Class Hawaii articles)  GA
B (adds articles to Category:B-Class Hawaii articles) B-Class article B
C (adds articles to Category:C-Class Hawaii articles) C-Class article C
Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class Hawaii articles) Start-Class article Start
Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class Hawaii articles) Stub-Class article Stub
FL (for featured lists only; adds articles to Category:FL-Class Hawaii articles) Featured list FL
List (adds articles to Category:List-Class Hawaii articles)  List
Future (for articles about future events; adds articles to Category:Future-Class Hawaii articles) Future-Class article Future

For pages that are not articles, the following values can also be used for the class parameter:

Book (for Wikipedia books; adds pages to Category:Book-Class Hawaii articles) Wikipedia Book Book
Category (for categories; adds pages to Category:Category-Class Hawaii articles) Category page Category
Disambig (for disambiguation pages; adds pages to Category:Disambig-Class Hawaii articles) Disambiguation page Disambig
Draft (for drafts; adds pages to Category:Draft-Class Hawaii articles)  Draft
File (for files and timed text; adds pages to Category:File-Class Hawaii articles)  File
Redirect (for redirect pages; adds pages to Category:Redirect-Class Hawaii articles) Redirect page Redirect
Portal (for portal pages; adds pages to Category:Portal-Class Hawaii articles)  Portal
Project (for project pages; adds pages to Category:Project-Class Hawaii articles)  Project
Template (for templates and modules; adds pages to Category:Template-Class Hawaii articles)  Template
NA (for any other pages where assessment is unnecessary; adds pages to Category:NA-Class Hawaii articles)  NA
??? (articles for which a valid class has not yet been provided are listed in Category:Unassessed Hawaii articles)  ???

An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{WikiProject Hawaii}} project banner on its talk page:

{{WikiProject Hawaii|importance=???}}

The following values may be used for the importance parameter to describe the relative importance of the article within the project:

Top (adds articles to Category:Top-importance Hawaii articles)  Top
High (adds articles to Category:High-importance Hawaii articles)  High
Mid (adds articles to Category:Mid-importance Hawaii articles)  Mid
Low (adds articles to Category:Low-importance Hawaii articles)  Low
NA (adds articles to Category:NA-importance Hawaii articles)  NA
??? (articles for which a valid importance rating has not yet been provided are listed in Category:Unknown-importance Hawaii articles  ???

The importance parameter should be assigned according to the importance scale below.

The general workflow is as follows:

  1. Locate an in-scope Hawaii-related article (or list), add the {{WikiProject Hawaii}} project banner to its talk page if it is not already there. (Note this also applies to new articles you may create, ie you can add the banner and the rating as you go).
  2. If currently unassessed (or when adding the project banner anew), determine what its class assessment rating should be, using your judgement and the criteria given here. Try to be as frank as possible in the assessment: the aim here is to appropriately identify articles needing later improvement and there's nothing to be gained by "over-ranking" them.
  3. Add the selected parameter values to the project banner template call, per the specified syntax. Once previewed/saved, you should see the values updated in the banner and the appropriate categories assigned.
  4. If in doubt as to the appropriate class level, you can either leave the value unassigned for now (ie omit the parameters), and/or consult with another project member to decide.
  5. If the article already has a rating, but you disagree or the article has subsequently been edited by you or someone else so that its overall quality has changed (hopefully for the better!), then you can update the parameter yourself to reflect its new status.
  6. Since we may (naturally enough) not be the most objective assessors of one's own work, it might be an idea in these or other unclear cases to invite another party to give the assessment. This can be done by adding the parameter/value combination |reassess=yes to the project banner, which will automatically assign the article in question to Category:Hawaii articles needing reassessment. You can also request reassessments/second opinions at the main discussion forum.
  7. On an ongoing basis, you can patrol the various x-class categories for improvement opportunities, and also the unassessed cats for new assessments.

If you have more extensive comments, you can follow the link displayed in the {{Hawaii}} template to reach the "ratings summary page". This allows you to place open-ended comments in a separate file to be picked up by the same mechanism. Because this is an automated process, there is a strict rule for the naming of this file. For example, comments about an article called Hula go in Talk:Hula/Comments. It may sometimes be useful to link to that comments page from Talk:Hula.
