WikiProject Industrial design is a Wikipedian community that aims to better organize information in articles related to Industrial design and its various components. This page and its subpages contain a lot of suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help on occasions, see the to-do list there. On 1 November 2014 Mareklug talk was elected for one year to coordinate it.

WikiProject Industrial design

If you would like to participate more in this project, then you can add your name to the list of participants, keep in touch with project developments by watchlisting Wikipedia:WikiProject Industrial design, and join discussions on the talk page (if you are not a member) or Design Cafe (if you are).

Background, scope and goals

WikiProject Industrial design should be a descendent project of both WikiProject Visual arts (as is WikiProject WikiProject Graphic design among others) and, of WikiProject Technology (as is WikiProject Electronics among others). It will then have the value of uncluttering those other projects... It was born around Christmas 2009 (through Alainr345).

Scope

This WikiProject aims primarily to provide readers of Wikipedia a clear and consistent reference for Industrial design and its various components. Topics covered by this WikiProject include some, but not all, subcategories of the Category:Industrial design articles (in addition to all articles of that main category):

The ultimate goal of this project is to provide a comprehensive guide to Industrial design-related articles on Wikipedia.

Current goals

"List/Tag/Assess/Write/Maintain", that's our motto here!...

Note: Rationale for having a portal about Design (at large):

  • There once was a sketch for an Industrial Design portal: over a 3-year period, it was not brought up to speed;
  • On the other hand, there is a fully-operational Visual arts portal: but it does not cater especially (if at all) to the Design topic;
  • There is no Graphic design portal (although there is a Typography portal);
  • There is no Interior design portal (although there is an Architecture portal);
  • There are thousands of Wikipedia articles related to the topic of Design;
  • The conclusion of all of these facts is that having a separate Design portal is needed.
  • The Design portal should stick mostly to: Industrial design (about 1853 articles), Graphic design (174 articles + about 1000) and Interior design (about 932 articles) because...
    • Fashion design is already covered by the Fashion portal;
    • Automotive design is already covered by the Automobile portal;
    • Aeronautics is already covered by the Aviation portal;
    • Bicycle design is already covered by the Cycling portal;
    • Motorcycle design is already covered by the Motorcycle racing portal;
    • Naval architecture is already covered by the Ships portal;
    • Traditional decorative arts are already covered by the Visual arts portal;
    • Game design is already covered by the Video games portal;
    • Software design is already covered by the IT portal;
    • Urban/Environmental design is already covered by the Architecture portal;
    • Electronic design is already covered by the Electronics portal;
    • Costume/Scenic design is already covered by the Film portal.

Structure and participants

With the current limited number of participants, we do not seem to need a structure yet - everybody is equal here.

To add yourself to this WikiProject, put the Industrial design userbox that will look something like this in your userpage by typing: {{Wikipedia:WikiProject_Industrial_design/Userbox}}

Articles

This is a collection of Industrial design related articles, created or still redlink.
Please list all articles in the name of the article including bracketed text.
This article list could be incomplete. Please help adding to it.

ARTICLES

This aims to be a complete article list of Industrial design topics existing in Wikipedia:

  • Therefore, only new articles and existing articles recently categorized in an Industrial design sub-category should be added here;
  • Also, red links (deleted articles) can be removed, as can be articles recategorized outside of ID scope;
  • Non-existing articles should be listed in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Industrial_design/List_of_article_requests, not here.

Note: the base list was created with the 8 following CatScans from December 2009 (so there may be doubles):

    Things to keep in mind

    There are a few things that you should try to keep in mind while editing Industrial design articles.

    Audience

    One of the primary goals of this project is to make Industrial design articles accessible, so you should make an effort to explain any jargon.

    Conventions

    References

    Try to ensure that every Industrial design article includes at least a few relevant references, and direct citations for anything that could be considered controversial. Wikipedia articles cannot be a substitute for a textbook (that is what Wikibooks is for), and references can give readers some idea of where they should go if they need more information than the article can provide. Just as important, providing further reading enables other editors to verify and to extend the given information, as well as to discuss the quality of a particular source.
