Camden and Burlington County Railway[edit]
The railroad of the Camden and Burlington County Railway Company, herein called the Camden and Burlington, is located entirely within New Jersey and extends from Pavonia to Pemberton, about 22 miles, with branches projecting from Mount Holly to Medford, Mount Holly to East Burlington, and from Evansville to Vincentown. With the exception of 3.994 miles of second main track the railroad is single track and aggregates 38.690 miles of road.
Introductory[edit]
The Camden and Burlington is a corporation of the State of New Jersey, having its principal office at Camden, N. J. The company is controlled by the Pennsylvania Railroad, partly through ownership of its capital stock and partly through the right to vote the capital stock owned by the United New Jersey Railroad. On the other hand, the records do not indicate that this company controls any carrier corporation. The property of the Camden and Burlington was operated from the date of its organization, October 4, 1915, to December 31, 1917, by the Pennsylvania Railroad. On January 1, 1918, its common-carrier property was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration, which still operates it on date of valuation.
Corporate History[edit]
The Camden and Burlington was incorporated October 4, 1915, under the general laws of New Jersey, for the purpose of acquiring the property, rights, and franchises of the Vincentown Branch of the Burlington County Railroad Company, The Mount Holly, Lumberton and Medford Railroad Company and the Camden and Burlington County Railroad Company. Pursuant to the above purpose, the Camden and Burlington acquired at its organization the property, rights and franchises of the three corporations named. The Camden and Burlington, itself, and those corporations, together with their predecessors, total six different corporations, of which one underwent a change of name, and comprise the line of corporate succession culminating in the Camden and Burlington as at present constituted. The following chart shows the names of the corporations, the respective dates of incorporation and for each predecessor the date of succession, the immediately succeeding corporation and the manner of succession. Reference to each of these corporations is made in the last column by its respective number shown in the first column.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]
The mileage owned by the Camden and Burlington, amounting to 38.690 miles, was all acquired through consolidation. The property constructed by the five corporations that comprise the line of corporate succession culminating in the Camden and Burlington as at present constituted, the years when the various portions of the line were constructed, and the manner in which this company acquired the property are indicated in the following table, wherein, to facilitate comparison with the table showing corporate succession, previously given, the same order of corporations is maintained.

Leased Railway Property[edit]
The entire property of the Camden and Burlington is leased to the Pennsylvania Railroad. On January 1, 1918, its common-carrier property was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration, which still operates it on date of valuation. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the year ended December 31, 1917, are given in the chapter on "Leased railway property" of the report on the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Vincentown Branch of the Burlington County Railroad Company[edit]

The accounting records of this company were incomplete. Those for the period from 1861 to January 3, 1898, were not obtained. Therefore, only partial information can be given from the accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations and investments. The records reviewed do not indicate whether this company was controlled by any individual or corporation on October 4, 1915, the date of its consolidation. The records do not indicate that it then controlled any other common-carrier corporation. The property of this company was operated by its own organization from about May, 1864, to October, 1864, and from September 30, 1866, to April 7, 1868; from October 1, 1864, to May 2, 1866, it was operated by The Burlington County Railroad Company; from May 2, 1866, to September 30, 1866, by the Camden and Burlington County Railroad Company; from April 7, 1868, to November 30, 1871, by The Camden and Amboy Rail Road and Transportation Company, and from December 1, 1871, to date of consolidation by the Pennsylvania.
The company owned on the date of its consolidation 2.77 miles of standard-gauge, steam railroad, which extended from Evansville to Vincentown, N. J., which had been acquired by construction in 1864.
The Mount Holly, Lumberton and Medford Railroad Company[edit]

The accounting records of this company are incomplete. Those for the period from 1866 to January 3, 1898, were not obtained. Therefore, only partial information can be given from the accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, and investments. The company was controlled on October 4, 1915, the date of consolidation, by the Pennsylvania Railroad through ownership of a majority of its capital stock. The records do not indicate that this company then controlled any other carrier corporation. The property was operated by the Camden and Amboy Rail Road and Transportation Company from December 20, 1869, to November 31, 1871; from the latter date to date of consolidation it was operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The company owned on date of consolidation 5.94 miles of standard-gauge, steam railroad, which extended from Mount Holly to Medford, N. J., which had been acquired by construction in 1869.

The records reviewed do not indicate whether this company was controlled by any individual or corporation on October 4, 1915, the date of consolidation. The records do not indicate that it controlled any other carrier corporation. The property was operated by its own organization May 2, 1866, to October 21, 1867; from the latter date to November 30, 1871, it was operated by The Camden and Amboy Railroad and Transportation Company, and from November 30, 1871, to date of consolidation it was operated by the Pennsylvania. This company owned on date of consolidation 29.85 miles of standard-gauge, steam railroad, which extended from Pavonia to Pemberton and from Mount Holly to East Burlington, all in the State of New Jersey.
Development of Fixed Physical Property Of the 29.85 miles of road owned by the Camden and Burlington County Railroad Company on date of consolidation, it had acquired 13.65 miles from the Burlington and Mount Holly Railroad and Transportation Company and 16.20 miles by construction. The Burlington County Railroad Company, formerly named The Burlington and Mount Holly Railroad and Transportation Company[edit]
The accounting records of this company are incomplete. Those for the period subsequent to December 31, 1863, were not obtained, and those for the period prior to that date were of fragmentary nature. Therefore, only partial information can be given from its accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, and investments. The data contained in the accounting records have been supplemented by those contained in the corporate minutes and are given as follows.
The records obtained do not indicate whether this company was controlled on May 2, 1866, the date of its consolidation, by any individual or corporation, or, whether it then controlled any other carrier corporation. The property was operated by it own organization from the dates of completion to the date of consolidation. The property consisted of a standard-gauge, steam railroad, which extended from Burlington to Pemberton, N. J., 13.65 miles, which had been acquired by construction in 1848–1863.
The Camden, Moorestown, Hainesport and Mount Holly Horse Car Railroad Company[edit]
The accounting records of this company were not obtained. Therefore, no information can be given from its accounts regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, or investments. It was not ascertained whether this company was controlled on May 2, 1866, the date of its consolidation, by any individual or corporation, whether it then controlled any other carrier corporation. No other information was obtained regarding the activities of this company.
