The course aims to introduce students to the currents of thought prevalent during the Enlightenment. We will be reading works by canonical authors whose names have come to be associated with the Enlightenment. We will also be covering the monumental Enlightenment project--the creation of the Encyclopédie.

The aim of the wikipedia assignment is for students to appreciate the spirit that animated the editors of the Encyclopédie. To this end I will ask my students to draft contributions to wikipedia on subjects, authors, texts, events, or individuals relevant to the Enlightenment.
