Clarification?[edit]

Call me silly but I thought that a page titled Image renaming would provide instructions on how to list an image for renaming (explicitly with examples), when to do so, why this may be a good/bad thing and what happens when you do as well as allowing users to request the ability to do all this. Does the bot just re-upload the image under the new name? does it carry all the templates etc across? does it carry the upload and editing history across (or does it need to)? does it delete the old image or CSD it? does it do the same for the talk pages? does it automatically update all pages that use the image or does someone have to follow it up themselves? It may be beneficial to add some of this to the page just to clarify what's happening. 86.21.74.40 (talk) 07:17, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll ask Betacommand about how picky the bot is about the page contents first, and if the checkpage itself can be differently named (or Betacommand could just reply here...), as I know the bot reads the page to validate the checkpage.

Actually, it occurs to me that the ideal situation would be to simply make the checkpage a subpage with only the user list, then simply transclude it onto the Wikipedia:Image renaming page, that way it can be fully editable. I like that idea better, but I really do want to make sure it won't break the bot and cause it to go renaming images and blowing up BC's computer first. :D ~Kylu (u|t) 22:46, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the checkpage is on Wikipedia:Image renaming/checkpage now, so the main page can be edited again. Better solution. :)

From what I understand, the bot downloads the image file, reuploads it to the new location with all templates and the original upload history as text, and marks the old location as a duplicate image CSD.

English Wikipedia is very strict on adminbots, so I doubt that an image-move bot would never get community approval. I don't think it does automatic updating of linked pages, though that would not be difficult. ~Kylu (u|t) 23:05, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

lol, I was being melodramatic about the banning. My main and only concern is breaking something, and/or doing something wrong that may be difficult to undue. Can this be used on other wikis?[edit]

I'm an admin on the YPPedia, the wiki for the Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates community. We have oodles of user generated artwork along with numerous screenshots and illustrations from the game itself being uploaded every day. While a lot of it does follow guidelines for naming the stuff that doesn't is often left behind while work continues on other administrative tasks. What I've seen of this project so far is really impressive - it adds a much missed function of Mediawiki to the administrator's toolbox.

Is it possible to set up something similar for other wikis, or can someone involved in the project give some advice on how to do it? I personally have no experience in writing bots which is why I came to the much larger Mediawiki community here at Wikipedia. Thanks.--Fiddling Frog (talk) 19:17, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List?[edit]

The main page of this article says that in order to be able to use this tool, I have to put my name at the bottom of a list on this talk page. But I'm here and I don't see any list of names.

What I need to do is rename several maps I've uploaded to Wikipedia. Newer versions of those maps are now uploaded to Wikimedia, but the old ones on Wikipedia have a unique file history that shows the evolution of these maps (from first draft to newest updates).

Thus for example, I'd like to rename the East-Hem_323bc.jpg to East-Hem_323bc_old.jpg. That would allow Wikipedia to use the new maps from Commons, while also being able to access the older drafts of each map by adding _old before the .jpg. Thomas Lessman (talk) 13:48, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no preference as to whether I am added to the list of potential image renamers or whether an administrator does it instead, but I'd like to see the file Image:IPA chart 2005.png renamed to Image:IPA chart 2005_old.png — for the same reason as is cited by Thomas Lessman above. I have already copied the latest instance of the Wikipedia file to Commons so that it, too, has the latest version wth the highest available resolution. Now we just need the Wikipedia file renamed. I am assuming the procedure to be (basically) the same as in Wikimedia Commons. That being, a trusted user may insert a rename or rename media|newname.jpg tag in the description pages of images to indicate that that should be renamed. A bot is supposed to take over from there. it's the same process, but there's a functional issue: Since Betacommand isn't running that bot on ENWP (don't ask, long story) we have the process in place, but no bot to do the actual moves.

Basically, the bot downloaded the image, re-uploaded to the new name, copied the page text and upload history over to the new page, and marked the old as to-be-deleted. Thanks, Kylu. It's nice to be aware of the situation. So it would seem that it is still a good idea to mark suitable images for renaming until either another bot is arranged or someone makes the changes manually? Historical reference?[edit]

The main page still references this page as part of a process to become a trusted user. If this is no longer part of the process than someone should change the main page.

To be honest this whole this is horribly confusing. The process also seems broken, as I have had an image I requested to be renamed 3 months ago and it is still not done. ( File:Alberta Highway 1A.svg).

I tagged the main page with {{Historical}}. The bot and its user that was responsible for carrying out the actual behind the scenes work of this process, is currently banned from Wikipedia.
