Useful and Undocumented (?) feature of reply tool / add topic tool when in visual mode
[edit]It seems that it is perfectly possible to add templates using the standard visualmode interface in the reply tool by typing two opening braces ( {{ ), which brings up the template window. It's unclear to me why this is only possible via this keyboard shortcut at present, and not (as far as I can see unless I'm missing it) from the interface itself, nevertheless, it is still a useful feature, so perhaps it should be included in this help page (and/or on Help:Talk pages § Reply tool) Tomatoswoop (talk) 19:04, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- It is a bit of a secret feature indeed. Note that it only works in the "Add topic" tool, and not in the "Reply" tool (because many templates don't work when indented with
:in wikitext). Matma Rex talk 20:26, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
How to revise old user talk page editnotice to be compatible with REPLYTOOL?
[edit]I'm using {{REVISIONUSER}}. Is there a substitute that works with REPLYTOOL? - Hipal (talk) 17:48, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- Can you say more about what you're using it for, and in what manner is it not compatible with the reply tool? Matma Rex talk 11:59, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- I was notified about it in this discussion:User_talk:Hipal#Regarding_Template:Ref_expand.
- Try to edit my talk page and see what you get. --Hipal (talk) 19:17, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hmm, I see "Welcome, , to the Wikipedia user discussion page for Hipal." (testing here: [1]), so I guess that's the problem. However, I see the exact same text with discussion tools disabled (testing here: [2]), so the problem probably lies somewhere else. Has this magic word ever worked to show the username of the person viewing the page? mw:Help:Magic words doesn't mention that. Matma Rex talk 20:57, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- That's what I was wondering. I put that editnotice together a very long time ago, copying from who-knows-what. I'll poke around, but any suggestions would be welcome. --Hipal (talk) 22:13, 18 August 2025 (UTC)

Reply_Tool_incompatible_with_certain_templates - ideas?
[edit]Apropos Wikipedia talk:Talk pages project/Archive 3#new Reply Tool incompatible with certain templates
Tragic. There's really no way to make these work? I would think there would be some way to escape in a newline or virtual ^H, or modify the table tool to see/accept :|}?
Any include tools that expand text only in the context of Reply Tool?

Outdent template for reply tool
[edit]Just a suggestion: It would be awesome to have an outdent template for the reply tool. As it stands, if I reply on a thread, I can't add a full outdent (make my reply go all the way to the left) without making a second edit in Source mode. OrdinaryOtter (talk) 05:42, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
Great work with the Reply tool and using custom edit summaries
[edit]As an editor who's largely been away since ten years about the happenings here, I found this Reply tool as one of the best and biggest improvements. Great work to the people who made it. In fact, I just came here to say that and if it's possible to be using custom edit summaries--only to find out, yes, you can by clicking "advanced". Ugog Nizdast (talk) 15:09, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
- Just did it first time with this reply! Ugog Nizdast (talk) 15:10, 5 June 2026 (UTC)
