centralized place where we could discuss the importance of the toolserver[edit]

So, I made this as a centralized place where we could discuss the importance of the toolserver, specifically to the english wikipedia. I personally think a toolserver is pretty much vital at this point, and if the current one has either technical or political reasons for being unreliable some sort of workaround needs to occur. Ideally that would mean a toolserver colocated with the main cluster. I don't know if this is the best place to start talking about it, but I think it should be discussed, and from asking a few other people there seems to be interest. - cohesion 00:55, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the toolserver is used by many different languages, most especially english and german, so this probably belongs somewhere on meta (eg. nearby m:Toolserver) (we can talk about the importance to enwiki, but it's also pretty important to the commons, etc). And discussions have traditionally been carried out on the mailing list or on IRC, but discussions could take place on meta too. --Interiot 01:11, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that the toolserver is used by all the other projects, but I think having the conversation on irc or the listserv or even on meta leads to only a few people being aware of it. I wanted to get a better understanding of how it is used on enwiki here, because I think, due to its use in smaller communities, its easy to forget how other groups are using it. I'm definitely not opposed to the discussion on future directions happening there though, but a list of how we are using the toolserver on enwiki, I think belongs here. I also think that any discussion of future directions would be aided by a wider understanding of how we are currently using it. - cohesion 02:25, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not a lot of trafic on the toolserver list though. I just joined it myself. First message I got was one sayign that Gmaxwell have root access to the toolserver now, wich is good I guess. Dunno if the admins have to do something at the Wikipedia end to make the replication work again though. --Sherool (talk) 14:31, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, very good news about Gmaxwell, and I'm sure given some time the toolserver will be fine, I still think we should have some list of where we are using it though, on enwiki, and this seems like an ideal place. I don't know if the page should stay an essay for this though, if anyone wants to rework the page into a more factual list without my pov whining feel free :) I might in a couple days if no one does. Does anyone else even think a list would be helpful? - cohesion 18:20, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Community Portal[edit]

I think it is important that we get this sorted out so these tools will be up and running again. I have posted a notice about this situation at Wikipedia:Community Portal. Johntex\talk 00:34, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I never really intended this to be similar to a petition, what I really thought we needed was a place to see how various projects are using the toolserver. I think the developers and other's working on it will get this situation sorted out, I don't think any of them think we don't need a toolserver, which is somewhat implied in a petition. I guess what I mean to say is, I think everyone involved is motivated with or without a petition. This page was created after the toolserver went down, but not to bring it back up as much as act as an ongoing resource about its usage. When the toolserver is back up and running (something I have no doubt will occur) I think this page will still be useful, its purpose isn't predicated on the toolserver being down. - cohesion 06:25, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I removed a lot of the front page, I think what I wrote was being misinterpreted, I don't know what (if anything) should go there. The goal was mainly the listing, which could serve to make all the uses of the toolserver more clear. If someone has any ideas about other things that would be useful, anything not specific to enwiki though should probably go to m:Toolserver. For the people signing the petition, I wouldn't worry about it not coming back :) Everyone likes it for their own special reasons, this page was just to list them all together so we would all like it even more, ha :) - cohesion 06:44, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Double Hmm, I got the impression that pressure needed to be built in order to get this resolved. I got that impression because Gmaxwell said things like: The developers moved enwiki without warning me, maybe they'll fix this someday, but I don't have much hope because the Asian cluster move never got fixed,... (not an exact quote). As long as everything is on the way to being fixed, that is fine by me. Johntex\talk 06:51, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Gmaxwell is now an administrator of the toolserver. I'm probably the wrong one to ask on this because I don't have all the details, but from what I do know I wouldn't worry about it not coming back. Maybe Gmaxwell or Interiot will offer some more info, but even if they don't I think it's ok. Anyway, I do like the idea of a toolserver etc, but I don't think it's really in jeopardy. I do still think a listing of uses would be helpful though, but I also don't want people to think they shouldn't edit Wikipedia:Toolserver, of course everyone should :) - cohesion 17:48, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Continuing Toolserver operations after move to Labs[edit]

I recall reading somewhere that the Toolserver would continue to operate—but in a limited fashion—after all the tools where moved over to Wikimmedia Labs. This was going to be for users that could not more their tools for one reason or another. I've searched and cannot find it anywhere, so I'm not adding to the page yet. If anybody can confirm or refute that, it would be helpful. Thanks. 64.40.54.100 (talk) 07:38, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Snottywong's tools[edit]

These tools have ceased to function, giving an error message "403: User account expired. The page you requested is hosted by the Toolserver user snottywong, whose account has expired." User:snottywong has has responded to inquiries by directing people to User:Σ;s version of the tools. However I see on their Talk page that User:Σ said that they won't be enabling any version of the tools. Too bad, as these were very useful resources. - LuckyLouie (talk) 16:18, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've got a Toolserver account but the directory is protected: Directory /home/snottywong: permission denied.
If only we had the source code we would be able to publish it on the Wikimedia Labs. JackPotte (talk) 21:33, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have no clue how all this works, but couldn't snottywong first renew his expired account then transfer that account to another editor who is inclined to support the tools? - LuckyLouie (talk) 01:35, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
He could give that to us by entering chmod -R 777 on the Toolserver. JackPotte (talk) 19:14, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Info here and here. - LuckyLouie (talk) 19:53, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Toolserver is over?[edit]

Hi ,is Toolserver shut indefinetely?--Yacatisma (talk) 10:40, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it is. According to http://toolserver.org/%7Edispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py
  • "As of July 1, the community run Toolserver was shut down. My tools weren't aligned with the Wikimedia Foundation's priorities, so they didn't make the transition to Labs."
I will really miss toolserver's Reflinks tool, accessible via this version of {{Cleanup-bare URLs}}:
Toolserver's Reflinks tool made it easy to improve and articles references. If anyone knows of an alternative, please reply. 72.244.200.166 (talk) 07:47, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
