WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

New article - Joyce Bennett[edit]

I have created a stub article Joyce M. Bennett, the first Englishwoman to be ordained an Anglican Priest. I've put it at Joyce M. Bennett instead of at Joyce Bennett as the latter already has a number of incoming links for the Australian athlete. It's not really in my usual sphere, and I am sure would benefit from the attention of members of this Wikiproject. DuncanHill (talk) 14:30, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Wrong display on mobile version; not present on Computer Version[edit]

The mobile version of the entry on Mary Irwin-Gibson[1], newly-elected bishop of Montreal, displays "Canadian Dean" as a subtitle on the mobile version; it does not do this on the computer version. How can I fix this? I have just made some minor edits and filled in some career information that appears on her current LinkedIn page[2]. Can I cite this, since it is so liable to change? Thanks! Mark Alan Gibson (talk) 03:05, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mark, I believe that subtitle is taken from Wikidata. I have updated the bishop's entry there accordingly. Regarding citing LinkedIn, it is certainly a less than ideal source, but using self-published sources (e.g, a profile on a social networking website) in an article about the author is not impermissible.
As well, I must ask, are you the same Mark Gibson who is married to the article's subject? If so, I would suggest that you review Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines. In particular, it is preferable if you:
  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you or your family, friends, clients, employers, or others with whom you have a relationship;
  • instead, propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template); and
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

Popular pages report[edit]

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Anglicanism/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Anglicanism.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Anglicanism, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Names of living bishops' families[edit]

Comrades! I've been wondering for a while whether the names of living bishops' (and 'senior' priests') spouses/partners and children ought to not be routinely included in their biographies, even though they are usually made known (certainly in England) in their appointment announcements. The most relevant guideline is WP:BLPNAME and a discussion is here. I agree that it may be notable whether a bishop (&c) is married or not (and how many times), but not to whom. Equally, I would propose that the number of children they have could be routinely included, but I think that including names probably breaches their privacy. DBD 17:21, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

New template[edit]

I have created a new template, Template:Episcopal lineage. It is used to display the lineage leading up to a bishop (including archbishops, cardinals, popes, patriarchs, etc.). It is configured to be used for Catholic, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and other Christian denominations that maintain a historical episcopate. An example of its use can be found on the template page or in the Pope Francis article. Ergo Sum 04:07, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Merge templates proposal[edit]

With the new Template:Episcopal lineage created, I propose merging Template:Ordination with the other. I think the aesthetics of episcopal lineage are preferable and recommend creating a new collapsible section within that template to include the information contained within ordination. Thoughts? The merger discussion is located at Template talk:Ordination#Merge templates. Ergo Sum 17:47, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Need help with Anglican Church of Australia categorization[edit]

See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2017 August 29#Category:Anglican_Church of Australia Ecclesiastical Province of Western Australia. The structure is odd in that other communion churches have a "Dioceses of" category level, and then the dioceses directly in that, generally with categories for bishops, parishes, etc. within the diocese all inside a "diocese of" category. And Template:Anglican Church of Australia is odd in ignoring the dioceses and putting the churches directly in the province. My suggestion would be to go to the way the other churches do it rather than interposing the provinces as a layer, but as I am not Australian this is an outsider's view. At any rate we need input. Great Apostasy[edit]

Hi. I'd like members to have a look at these edits and the accompanying discussion at Talk:Great Apostasy. It seems to me that they alter the Overview section in a POV way, giving undue weight to fringe Protestant views of the Catholic Church such as idol-worship, worship of Mary, and the hybrid "pagan Mother-Son worship". And not only that, but these fringe views are copied to the lead, totally skewing it. The citations are a collection of far-out Christian websites: http://amazingdiscoveries.org/S-deception_end-time_paganism_Catholic_sun-worship, https://www.sabbathtruth.com/sabbath-history/how-the-sabbath-was-changed, https://www.gotquestions.org/worship-saints-Mary.html, http://www.the-ten-commandments.org/catholic_church_idolatry.html, https://bible.org/question/it-okay-worship-statues-jesus, and a self-published 1914 pamphlet, The Practice of Idolatry, none of which come anywhere near satisfying WP:RS. Any input into the discussion is welcome. I'm copying this to other Christian WikiProjects. Scolaire (talk) 15:19, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

"Previous denomination: Roman Catholic"[edit]

A large number of articles about Anglican churches, such as this one, have an infobox saying "Denomination: Anglican; Previous denomination: Roman Catholic". I see several problems with this.

  • It's inherently POV to assert that these churches had a previous denomination.
  • "Roman Catholic" is an anachronism if we're talking about events before the English Reformation.
  • "Roman Catholic" is a redirect (to Catholic Church).

I propose removing all such "previous denomination" fields. What are your thoughts? Marnanel (talk) 22:21, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Agreed. There is no information conveyed - all pre-1534 (pre-1558?) English churches were necessarily in communion with Rome until the English church separated from Rome; and until the separation occurred there was no such concept as "Roman Catholic" - "Roman Catholic" was coined specifically to distinguish the church in communion with Rome from the Anglican church (which also holds itself to be Catholic). This makes no more sense than asserting that the Hagia Sophia was Roman Catholic, or St John Lateran Orthodox, until the Great Schism. TSP (talk) 20:39, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject[edit]

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Anglicanism

Anglican scholasticism?[edit]

I created Protestant scholasticism as a catchall for Lutheran scholasticism and Reformed scholasticism. According to one of the sources I cite in the article, Anglicanism never developed a body of scholastic theology, yet from a brief internet search I came across indications that there may have been some sort of Anglican scholasticism in the 1600s or so. If anyone has any information relevant to this question, please add it to the article. Thanks. Ltwin (talk)

Proposal for a new infobox[edit]

I'm thinking about creating a new infobox template, (potentially) called Infobox church office. While I have mainly Catholic offices in mind, I think it can be used for Anglican ones as well, and potentially others, such as Latter-day Saint ones. I envision it being something of a cross between {{Infobox organization}} and {{Infobox official post}}, except customized to allow parameter labels and template designs that are specific to a given church. I imagine it being used as the primary infobox on articles about specific positions, like Cardinal Vicar and Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (Catholic), and Archdeacon of Westminster (Anglian). It would be able to accommodate offices held by individuals, such as Cardinal Vicar, as well as those that are collective bodies, such as the Congregations. It would not be used for general positions, like periodeutes or hierodeacon. What do people think of this? Ergo Sum 03:27, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

What I think of this is that you have created this thread without mentioning that you had already started similar threads elsewhere, contrary to WP:MULTI. The earliest that I can find is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Catholicism#Proposal for a new infobox. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:26, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Links to DAB pages[edit]

I have a whole pile of articles bookmarked which have {{disambiguation needed}} tags about where a clergyman served. Solving these problems may need access to Crockford's.

Can any experts here help solve this first batch of problems? Even knowing the dedication of a church, and whether the incumbent was a rector or a vicar, can sometimes be enough to help solve puzzles like these.

If you do manage to solve one of these problems, take the {{disambiguation needed}} tag off and mark it here as {{done}}. If you can half-solve a problem, add your findings here.

This article, however, just needs a year filling in:

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject[edit]

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background[edit]

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:25, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Lists of churches[edit]

I've started a discussion at Talk:Anglican_Diocese_of_Leeds#Lists_of_churches about lists of churches in diocesan articles, which I'd appreciate more general input on as similar lists have been added to a large number of Anglican dioceses. TSP (talk) 15:47, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
