Note: My focus right now is solely on bowling articles related to Japan. I'm starting to develop the articles, starting with the orgs, and then building the tournament articles. I can also help out with American bowling articles, as I'm a walking encyclopedia when it comes to PBA bowling prior to 1990. Groink (talk) 10:23, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. Sniper

Is there such a move as a sniper in ten pin bowling? I have heard that you get a sniper if you manage to knock the far left or far right pin down with a ball, whilst the rest stay upright, therefore only scoring 1 point on that half go. Simply south not SS, sorry 18:21, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. Table for results in majors?

Just an idea I thought I'd pass by you all. Many tennis players have a table each, consisting of results in major tournaments year-by-year. I was thinking, maybe we could possibly come up with a similar table for bowlers' final positions in majors? PizzaofDoom (talk) 02:19, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Are there enough articles on this subject to justify an Outline of bowling?

I believe there are enough. The challenge is that bowling is such as broad subject. It encompasses different types of bowling (10-pin, duck, candle, etc.) And, bowling as an organization is scattered all over the world. Right now, it seems that most of the members of this wikiproject are knowledgeable of 10-pin bowling in the United States. GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! Unreferenced BLPs

Not sure if you are aware, but there has been a lot of discussion about the need to reference all biographies of Living People. See here if you have a spare week or two. The WP:Australia project has been working through a list, and there are two bowlers on our list. I don't know enough about bowling to know where to find reliable references or if they are notable. Jason Walsh and Rebecca Simpson were the Australians, but I thought I'd search through Category:WikiProject Bowling articles and compare it to Category:All unreferenced BLPs and got the following (short) list (WP:Australia had over 2000, WP:Football has over 3000!). There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Bowling/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 37 articles to be referenced. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

I've already seen a couple of editors chime in - both in support of this image. Please keep the comments flowing in! The editors in favor of NFCC#8 are reading into the language too literally, and IMO are policy zealots. If NFCC#8 continue to be interpreted as such, we won't be able to upload any photos, such as imagery show the faces of the bowlers, or important bowling events such as this image in question. RfC on the use of flag icons for sportspeople

I put in my two yen. The PBA Tour tournaments like the Round1 Japan Cup uses the flag icons, and I don't think it is necessary. For example, Mika Koivuniemi is from Finland. However, when he bowls along with the other PBA Tour members against the JPBA, he's representing the PBA Tour and not Finland. The tournament documentation is consistent on this - it is the PBA Tour vs the JPBA. The World Bowling Tour is different, in that participants in its tournaments are based on the individual's membership with the WBT. Therefore, if Mika were to win a WBT tournament, he won it for himself and not for the PBA Tour, therefore a flag icon should be used in that case. Groink (talk) 04:00, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Bowling

Hey figure somebody who watches this page will see this and take note. Just went to wikipedia's Bowling page and was stunned that the History section was like 8 lines. Had just heard something interesting about how NBC's bowling program in the 50's(?) really made bowling a national pastime, wanted to see more about that, and so came to the disappointing Wikipedia Bowling entry. Reads like a brochure from the PBA. Yeah don't complain if you're not going to help... but please copy pasta something decent into the history section the page, or make a separate page (or main page) "History of Bowling." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.108.64.47 (talk) 04:29, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

All the entries here are supposed to be in chronological order, so I moved this section to the bottom. Anyway, regarding the Bowling article, one has to realize that bowling is not any one particular sport. It encompasses a variety of bowling styles, such as 10-pin, 5-pin, duck, candlepin, etc. each with its own Wikipedia article. IMO, the Bowling article cannot favor any one particular variation of bowling, therefore the article is vague by design, based on this idea. You're mentioning about bowling coverage in the 1950s - that pertains specifically to Ten-pin bowling, so you should expect to see something about that there. Groink (talk) 23:49, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Hey all, I hope everyone is safe and healthy. My name is HickoryOughtShirt?4 and I'm a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey. I was wondering if there was any interest in starting a WikiProject Sports channel on Discord? There's quite a few of us who are interested in sports, and I think it would be a good idea to help the WikiProject recruit more members. Proposed deletion of Frames per stop

User script to detect unreliable sources

Main page: User:Headbomb/unreliable

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
