I had split college career into subsections by school for two new articles (Justin Pippen and Dai Dai Ames), the starting backcourt for the 12-1 Cal Bears who are off to their best start in over 65 years. They are up for review at WP:DYK and the sections were stripped out by the reviewer User:Launchballer. Do we want these subsections or not subsections? What about high school season sections. I don't have a lot of content in the sections, but I was wondering.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:18, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sub-sections are used to help readers navigate articles. It is actually one of my pet peeves that people automatically put sub-sections in when they are not needed (I have not looked at these specific articles, just speaking generally). Rikster2 (talk) 08:30, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
TonyTheTiger, the advice given at WP:OVERSECTION is Very short sections and subsections clutter an article with headings and inhibit the flow of the prose. Short paragraphs and single sentences generally do not warrant their own subheadings. You seem to be asking whether the project should or does have a standard that applies to the creation or condemnation of section headings for each season. I do not believe this is something that ought to be standardized. Some player articles may have a signficant amount of content related to a single season that merits a section heading. Others may not. In some cases, there may be significant content for a player's freshman and senior seasons but little for the sophomore and junior seasons. It may be appropriate in such a case to have three subsection headings with the sophomore and junior seasons combined. I agree with Rikster2 that subsections should not be added to articles by rote; they should be added only if they are helpful to readers. Taxman1913 (talk) 14:37, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Separately, I've been a Cal fan since 1981, and I'm very excited about how the Golden Bears have started the season. The details included in these two articles are not likely to be relevant, if these players go on to have lengthy professional careers. Right now, they reflect the current state of affairs, but if Cal breaks my heart and tanks in ACC play, some of the statements made in these articles will lose their present meaning. In my opinion, any editor who is adding this content to these articles needs to accept the responsibility for keeping it current and relevant. Taxman1913 (talk) 14:45, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't always pay attention to WP:MOS and often go by feel. In this case, Pippen has played for 2 colleges in 2 seasons and Ames has played for 3 colleges in 3 season. It is often standard to section of tenures with pro teams or college schools. In these cases, I did not find a ton of encyclopedic content, but I thought that it would help the reader to navigate to a specific period by having sections. In the past I have been told to unsection 1- and 2-line sections. Usually, I either find a lot of stuff or have a line or two. This is somewhere in between. I was not sure if basketball specialists would have a special set of considerations.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:06, 23 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Readers do not need help reading 2 short paragraphs in a section. If the prose is not long enough to justify sub-sections, it hinders the reader, it doesn’t help them. The fact that a person played for 2 colleges is typically both illustrated in the infobox (with years) and mentioned prominently in the lead. Rikster2 (talk) 03:28, 24 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am researching Peter Suder and he had a team high 14 points, team high 3 steals, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a block as a high school freshman in the IHSAA Class 4A championship game. Although Chicago Public LibraryProquest has some Indy Star articles. I keep finding online articles that are not available. Can anyone help me with the Indy Star articles related to Suder?
Did Suder place in the top 5 or so of Indiana Mr. Basketball [1]?
Was there any statisitical showdown between Braden Smith and Suder in the senior season loss [2]?
Am I reading the search result blurb correctly that Suder also had a team-high 15 points in the 2019 state semis [3]?
