Cornwall-related articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Cornwall-related articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Recently created stubs

I have noticed that quite a few stubs that have been created by User:Starzynka (who has been blocked for sock-puppetry) are no more than one-line introductions. Many of these Monastic based-stubs can be found at Category:Cornwall articles missing geocoordinate data. I have had a go at trying to expand a couple of these into more of an article, but I have found it quite hard to find any online sources of information, so would someone with access to some other sources be able to have a look at these, decide whether these stubs are notable enough to be kept and maybe expand them slightly if so please? Food articles - good topic

Just thought I'd mention this here in case anyone objects before I do it. I've been working on getting a few of the Cornish food articles up to good status - Pasty, Stargazy pie, Squab pie and Clotted Cream so far. I thought it might be a good idea to create a good topic on Cornish Cuisine. However, I was told that a good topic should cover every article in series, so I'd need to get the rest of the Cornish food articles up to scratch.

I'm not sure there's enough on some of the stubs to make a good article, so I was thinking of merging the sweet Cornish foods into Cornish Cakes, including Hevva cake, Saffron buns and Fairings along with any other Cornish cake bits I can find. Similarly with Cornish Cheese, which will include Yarg and hopefully other cheeses I can find (I used to eat only Cornish cheese, theres at least 10 varieties I can name!). I'd then put Hog's pudding in the Cornish cuisine article and bingo bango we've got ourselves a good topic (assuming I can get three articles up to Good status). Are there any objections? This sounds a good idea! One thing I'll say is to merge the info from Saffron bun into the Cornish cakes article, but keep the original one there as it covers both the Swedish varieties as well as the Cornish ones (I can confirm the Swedish ones do exist out here and are tasty!). What's the plan with Cornish Gilliflower? Perhaps merge into Cornish cuisine under a Fruit and vegetables section? I'm wondering if there's more we could add to such a section - is there a particularly Cornish potato?

I have come across editors using Cornwall, UK or Cornwall, England because they do not like the clumsy wording of Cornwall, England, UK. I personally do not see a problem with Cornwall, UK being officially adopted, and I don't really get what the argument is against it. Bodrugan (talk) 13:54, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
We have consensus to include both "England" and "United Kingdom", because of the edit wars when only one is included - nationalist opinion being split on whether Cornwall is separate from England but part of the UK and whether it is an administrative area of England. Are the articles on Cornwall topics in the Simple English Wikipedia supposed to follow the same pattern of "Cornwall, England, UK"? As they may not be edited by WikiProject Cornwall members it would be hard to control I suppose.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 20:39, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
Simple English Wikipedia is a separate entity, and decisions made by consensus here need not be followed there (it is to be hoped that there is simply not the advocacy for one viewpoint over the other, and no edit wars). LessHeard vanU (talk) 20:48, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
The editing of Cornwall articles there looks quite neutral at present and I have created a few articles for settlements, using "Cornwall, UK" rather than the fuller form. CNLA

Some changes to Cornish National Liberation Army, one thing I have done is remove an apparently spurious citation, and cast doubt on the actual existence of the CNLA as anything mor e than a hoax. See also its talk page Govynn (talk) 08:00, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Done a WP:AWB scan of all the Cornish wikipedia articles and created a list of articles not linked to the English wikipedia. See list here. Recently created sub-stubs

A while ago User:Dr. Blofeld created a whole load of Cornish place stubs from redlinks in List of places in Cornwall. While these are a good start, they generally contain little information and only state "x is a village in Cornwall, England" and are referenced to Google maps. As such there are a few issues with these articles - For the regulars amongst us, you'll see that the location description doesn't match the "England, UK" style laid down in the guideline; also some places can hardly be described as a "village", some can be barely described as a "hamlet", one example being Cusveorth Coombe, which is here on OS maps and doesn't exist on the referenced Google maps. Therefore we could do with systematically going through these and expanding/improving the articles.

I've created a list of these locations at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cornwall/Recently created stubs, based on the listing from Category:Cornwall articles missing geocoordinate data which captures most of these articles (as they were created without geocoordinates), including a list of things that need doing before crossing them off. Mount Edgcumbe

Would it be a good idea to merge Mount Edgcumbe House with Mount Edgcumbe Country Park? The two pages are strikingly similar. Alansplodge (talk) 20:08, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

I think that would be a good idea, to stop excessive overlap. I think it would be bet to merge these into a new article of Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park and set the others as redirects, as it's what this government website seems happy calling it. St Agnes, St Merryn and Treneglos

All these articles have been expanded recently: St Agnes, Cornwall, and St Merryn have been expanded and now conform to the normal style for settlements. Treneglos also has been much improved with a lot of archaeological information.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 19:41, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Please help get Cornwall ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

  • The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
  • The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
  • The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
  • The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
  • Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
  • The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
  • References may be added according to normal WP practice.

Second opinion requested

Can someone uninvolved take a look at the minor edit-war currently going on at Bal maiden? Someone is insisting on removing the links to iron and copper because they're "common terms" (along with South Australia in the section on the exodus of miners when the mines closed). I've already reverted twice, and obviously don't want to hit the WP:3RR limit. However, I would say that in an article on Cornish mining history, these are absolutely relevant links, and readers are fairly likely to want to know more about the materials in question. Obviously, I don't want to fight over this if there genuinely is a Wikipedia policy against these links, but I can't see how these links wouldn't be appropriate in these circumstances. Mogism (talk) 18:20, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, we are running a training session for museum curators and other staff on the 20th Feb in Falmouth, and have had more signups than we bargained for. Is there anyone near Falmouth who would be available on the day to assist - we usually find at these events that someone is either much slower or much faster than the class or wants to spin the thing off into a discussion as to why their article was deleted. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Old maps and views of Cornwall and the South West

As you might have seen in the Signpost this week, there's currently a drive to go through the million 19th century images released by the British Library last year, and identify all the maps, with a view to their being georeferenced by BL volunteers, and then uploaded to Commons early next year. As of Sunday night, over five thousand new maps have been identified, with 26.5% of the target books looked at -- but see the status page for the latest figures, and more information.

A part that may specifically interest this project is

c:Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - South West

which currently shows pink templated links for 237 Flickr book pages still to be looked at. (Though there are lots of other parts of England, and indeed of the world, still to be looked through as well).

Any help looking through these would be very much appreciated -- as well as the maps (and ground plans) for tagging, you may well also find other interesting or useful non-map views that may be worth considering or uploading for articles on Cornwall and the West Country.

Will Coleman and Dalla song?

There's a proposal at Talk:Black and Gold to move to Talk:Black and Gold (folk song), I believe at present state of article it should either move to Talk:Black and Gold (Will Coleman song) or be deleted. It appears to not be a folk song. I understand the legitimacy of what artists like Will Coleman are doing, but nevertheless we can't misrepresent a modern creation as "folk song" in the title if it is a recent creation. The West Country Challenge

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

English Heritage inspector, Draft:Francis P Kelly

Hello, I'd appreciate any input on this draft article on a recently retired English Heritage/Historic England inspector who helped preserve and maintain heritage buildings in the SW, including Cornwall. For example, St Odulph's Church in Pillaton - he inspected after serious storm damage in 2013 and supervised the extensive repairs. PD Scilly Isles postcards: C. J. King

While researching ornithological photographers, I came across C.J. King, who also worked commercially and reputedly published the first postcards of the Scilly Isles. He died in 1939, so his works are out of copyright. I've uploaded a few of his pictures on Commons, but others can be found on eBay and the like. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Isles of Scilly taskforce?

Penwith

The Penwith article seems very confusing and out of date. It's trying to cover the now defunct district of Penwith, but also West Penwith/the Penwith peninsula and completely ignores most of East Penwith (The areas around Camborne and Redruth). The district covered the western two thirds of the old Hundred of Penwith, and doesn't really match up with the geographical area of the Penwith peninsula or West Penwith as it included areas around Hayle. I think we need a separate article on the old district council, as there is for the hundred, and the article on Penwith should encompass the whole thing (West Penwith, East Penwith and the former district) or just become a disambiguation page and create pages for West Penwith and the district. This page was merged into Geography of Cornwall in 2009, but more recently all of the information on this subject was removed from that page, meaning the redirect doesn't take you to the information any more. Cornish people

We have a guideline (Wikipedia:WikiProject Cornwall/Guideline) for article leads on the Cornwall - England - United Kingdom issue, but could we also have one for biographies of Cornish people on the use of Cornish as a nationality in leads? Bodrugan (talk) 10:45, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

  • WP:NATIONALITY. "The opening paragraph should usually provide context for the activities that made the person notable. In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory, where the person is a citizen, national, or permanent resident; or, if the person is notable mainly for past events, where the person was a citizen, national, or permanent resident when the person became notable. For guidance on historic place name versus modern-day names, see WP:MODERNPLACENAME.
Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability. Similarly, previous nationalities or the place of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless relevant to the subject's notability". DuncanHill (talk) 22:53, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
There is an exception for nationalities within the UK. Why the UK in particular gets this I don't really understand, but that's the way it is. Note that it's not based on "countries of the United Kingdom" (this would result in Welsh people between 1746 and 1967 being labelled as English) so the policy should be read as being inclusive of the Cornish, unless Wikipedia wants to discriminate against the Cornish in particular. Editors should bear in mind that a large proportion of people in Cornwall regard themselves as either English (i.e. that Cornwall is a part of England), or both English and Cornish. Not all, of course, but (like it or not) a substantial proportion. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:10, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
Ideally, we would need some data to back this up (and some reliable sources), so maybe why should wait until the result of the 2022 census comes out this summer, which should give us some idea on the preferred nationality of Cornish people (and maybe some RS will publish some articles as well). Yes, that's perfectly true. What I'm encountering is that biographies of Cornish people, who may not have seen themselves as English, are being edited and changed to describe them as English (rather than British) using the above policy to justify it. What I would suggest is that all nationalities in opening paragraphs for people born in Cornwall should read British, unless a Cornish identity was part of that person's notability, or we have evidence that that person identified themselves as Cornish, or indeed English (and any other identity). [Just to clarify, @Bodrugan, I'm not saying we use the census to cite wether someone identifies as Cornish, just that the census will probably lead to reliable sources publishing articles about Cornish identity, given any discussion on Wikipedia about Cornish identity some basis and data (my fault for rushing to write that reply!)] Yes, I think that approach would probably be appropriate, given that Cornish identity can be a controversial issue. People from Cornwall should not have their national identity assumed. The Cornish are a recognised national minority and a blanket "English" description could introduce inaccurate information. The only way we can be sure of someone's national identity is if there are reliable sources in which they mention it. @Ghmyrtle Regardless of how many in Cornwall identify as English, it does not change the fact that the Cornish are a recognised national minority group.
I propose the following policy for WP:Cornwall pages: "The Cornish are a recognised national minority. In articles, the nationality of people from Cornwall should be given as British only, unless reliable sources can be found in which they state a Cornish or other identity". --Lader Gwiader (talk) 12:57, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Transport for Cornwall

Was back down last year and was very excited about the transport developments but had a headache trying to find out what this organisation actually is. After reading up, I compiled some findings on a new Wikipedia page at Transport for Cornwall. I've got a little more to add in the coming weeks but also some gaps, especially about the structure and the relation between bus companies and the organisation (what is tendered, direct, contracted, partnership, participating in ticket scheme only... etc.) and the power balance of Go Cornwall vs First vs others. First have joint ticketing with Transport for Cornwall, but I don't think they operate any subsidised routes so no buses are branded as TfC. They mostly operate in the west and north of the Duchy.
Go Cornwall had some commercial services in the east of the Duchy but all Go Cornwall buses seem to carry TfC branding, however Plymouth CityBus-branded vehicles also work on some of these services. They are all one company (along with Go Devon Bus) but use the different brands for different service groups. Geof Sheppard (talk) 11:03, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
