Proposal to consolidate African country WikiProject banners[edit]

Template:AfricaProject was recently modified, and now contains individual parameters for all countries in Africa (see usage notes). Since project-specific assessment for all African countries can now be accomplished through the template, a proposal has been made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa to consolidate all individual African country WikiProject banners.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Ghana[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

African cinema task force[edit]

Help request: 190 Ghana-related articles needing geographical coordinates[edit]

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Ghana, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Ghana, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Ghana articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

  1. Akatsi District
  2. Akpafu-Todzi
  3. Berekum District
  4. Bolgatanga Municipal District
  5. Kintampo North District
  6. Kuntenase
  7. New Abirem

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 190 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?[edit]

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?[edit]

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members.

Article alerts[edit]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. Ghana articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Ghana articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. Roads and highways[edit]

I'm confused. We seem to have a recent bunch of articles, and I'm confused. They're all one-sentence stubs, and so if the topics can be cleared up a bit, then we could merge them all together into useful articles. As it is, the navbox at the bottom of the article is longer than each article.

I've tagged those three to be merged together, but then I found this article, Ghana Highways Authority. Should that be merged into the Ministry article as well? My second question is about Ministry of Transport (Ghana). After reading that, I'm left with the impression that the Ministry of Roads and Highways was renamed or otherwise converted into the Ministry of Transport. If that's the case, we have several single sentence articles that can and should be merged into the MoT article. Please help. Imzadi 1979  04:49, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Destructive member of this group[edit]

I've just reverted a bunch of edits by User:MarkMysoe, who appears to be trying to ethnically and religiously purify the portrayal of Ghana here on WP. That meant reverting the main Ghana article to its version of Nov. 28, doubtlessly erasing many good edits as well. Then there was redirecting the traditional religion article—admittedly badly written—into 'Christianity in Ghana', when the merge tag suggested merging into the Akan article. Typical claims are that the Ewe aren't really Ghanaians but Togolese; various northern peoples are really Burkinabe; everybody's Christian and there is no crime apart from what immigrants "sneak" into the country. The sources I've checked have all been falsified, such as using a Brazilian census and a book which does not even contain the name "Ghana" to remove mention of the Ewe in the demographics section, or "correcting" a quotation be removing the Ewe when the source specifically mentions them, etc. It's all rather appalling. — kwami (talk) 05:50, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

I think that Prostitution in Ghana should have its own article. I believe that there is now enough third person information to justify a solo article see sources below what does anyone else think I believe enough information can e gathered expand on the sources provided.

In 2009 I created several surname pages (for example, Quaye, Owusu, Ayew, Boakye) which, in the conventional manner, list people with that surname who have articles in Wikipedia, linking to their pages. Whenever I create such pages, I include brief information about each person, taken from their Wikipedia article.

I am puzzled by recent changes to these pages (and other surname pages) which have added the word "Akan" to almost every line in the page. I welcome the addition to the preamble to state that the name is an Akan name, but to change each person's entry to include the word Akan seems excessive, especially since this now makes the entry different from the description of the person on the page it links to.

I am hoping that posting a message here will help to resolve this strange development, and that people with a knowledge of nationality, ethnicity and sensitivities in Ghana will be able to advise me whether there is consensus for these changes. My own proposal would be for the introductory section on the page to outline the surname's Akan origins, but for the summary information about each individual to be kept completely consistent with the information on the page it links to. I also think that, particularly for biographies of living people, any statement on Wikipedia about a person's ethnicity (eg "Akan") should cite a reliable reference.

Akan slowly taking over part of Ghana in our articles[edit]

List of Akans has been deleted[edit]

An article on my watchlist, List of Akans just got summarily deleted without due process, apparently as a punitive measure against the main contributor who was banned - and without prejudice to any argument that List of Akans might actually be an encyclopedic topic. I gather that the user was banned for promoting some kind of "Akan-only" identity for Ghanaians in general, or something like that, I don't know for sure. But because of this punitive measure, there is now no List of Akans, who are certainly a prominent group in their own right, and it may be risky to recreate such a list. Yes, I'm still cleaning up the mess that he left, sometimes reverting almost a year of article history. In some cases it may be worth going through and rescuing legitimate edits, but I'm not going to spend the time on it. As far as I can remember, the list was mostly Mark's creation, and therefore suspect in its entirety. And yes, Mark went on a racist rampage across hundreds of Ghanaian articles, insisting for example that the Ewe etc. are illegal aliens responsible for all of Ghana's problems and that the country needs to be ethnically purified. — kwami (talk) 21:01, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Pride 2014[edit]

The article on Yennenga needs a picture, and I have found some photographs of various statues of her. However, I have been unable to locate copyright information about them. If anyone can locate a picture and upload it under a free or fair use license it would greatly improve the article. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Takoradi Harbour[edit]

I'm no expert here, so I was hoping someone could let me know: Do these images look like they are from Takoradi Harbour? They are certainly form a harbour, and one photo mentions railway jetties. Candidate for pilot testing, round one[edit]

Hello, WikiProject Ghana!

On the recommendation of Masssly, I am happy to announce that this WikiProject has been selected for the first round of WikiProject X pilot testing! Pilot testing candidates were selected on the basis for potential success of the WikiProject.

The goal of WikiProject X is to improve the WikiProject experience through research, design, and experimentation. On that basis, we've prepared a new WikiProject design template based around modules. These modules include features you are already familiar with, such as article alerts, but also new features such as automated work lists, a feed of discussions taking place on the 3,474 talk pages tagged by WikiProject Ghana, and a new member profile system with opt-in notifications. The new design is available for your review at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ghana/New. Please let me know what you think. (Note that some of the modules depend on output from other bots, meaning there will be some visual inconsistencies for now. I hope to resolve this in the long term.)

The next steps:

  1. If you are all satisfied with the design, I will implement it on the WikiProject page. Unless there are major points of contention, I hope to get this done by Friday, July 10.
  2. Using information from Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory/Description/WikiProject Ghana, I will work on recruiting new members for the WikiProject. I will also reach out to your current listed members.

As many of you know, there are a fair number of sources in the public domain available on most parts of the world, and Internet Archive appears to have quite a few which relate to the old "Gold Coast" area, or in a search there for "Ghana". It would certainly be possible to try to maybe find which sources there would be the most useful for articles here, and maybe try to transcribe them to wikisource first, or just find the sources and add the material verbatim or otherwise to the relevant articles here. If anyone wanted to suggest some works which could be transcribed for wikisource, which has the advantage of also making the transcribed version readily available in perpetuity, feel free to suggest them below. 10 subscriptions to Sabinet, a digital publisher in South Africa, are being offered through the Wikipedia Library, among other databanks. WikiProject X up for renewal[edit]

First of all, I would like to express my appreciation for WikiProject Ghana for testing the new WikiProject interface and tools. Thank you.

WikiProject X is up for renewal at the Wikimedia Foundation. We would like to continue working to make our existing tools better: to make them easier to use, and to integrate them with other Wikimedia projects, including Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Maintenance work[edit]

To let everyone know, I will be making a change to the {{Load WikiProject Modules}} Lua module, used on this project to render the different sections. This change involves, among other things, moving the different section headers out of the subpages and onto the main WikiProject page. This change will make the WikiProject easier to use and maintain. During this change, there may be a brief time window where the WikiProject page looks broken. Auto-assessment of article classes[edit]

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. Would anybody here be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. National Contest for Ghana[edit]

@Rberchie: and @Enock4seth:. How would you chaps like to be involved with launching an inaugural Wikipedia:WikiProject Ghana/National Contest for Ghana, the first proper national general content contest for an independent nation on wikipedia? Not just women but everything Ghanaian under the sun ;-)? Such a contest would naturally involve Wiki Loves Women and the women cause and special attention to that but it would attract editors to improve articles on everything at once and try to emulate this. A contest could be designed to tackle every topic and every type of article from missing content, to cleanup, destubbing, high importance/core, Good Articles etc, and you'd design points to give to editors who notch up the most points. like 10 points new article, 25 points destubbing, 200 points GA etc. And you could apply for a grant to get prize funding for it. The Nigerian one wasn't aware that it was allowed when they organized the current one!

Let me know if you're interested. You'd be free to run the contest yourself of course ;-) If you can get a few people interested I will set something up, and you could run it as a part WP:Ghana, part Wiki Loves Women contest. Media upload of historical photographs of Ghana[edit]

The Temminck Groll Collection consists of 2,641 historical photographs taken by the Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll (1925-2015). The photos were taken in regions with which the Dutch have had historical relations, including countries in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia (see the category description for a full listing). The photos were taken during Temminck Groll's travels and study of 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders) and mainly date to the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs were digitised by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world.
