Stub template

Aloha from the other side of Polynesia! (I'm in New Zealand). You may have noticed a comment on the Hawaii stub template saying that it's up for deletion. Don't worry - the template that is up for deletion is not {{Hawaii-stub}}, but is a redirect for it, {{HI-stub}} - Hawaii-stub is not up for deletion. The redirect is because there is a general guideline of removing any ambiguous or misleading stub template names, including many that contain two or three letter abbreviations. Although HI is a valid abbreviation for Hawaii, it could also be the abbreviation for many other things, and since it's only a redirect it's seen as "surplus to requirements". Welcome Mibo!

Mibo has contributed some good material to the Hula article, which could still use a lot of work, but is making some progress. Articles re famous teachers and halaus, as well as the many current hula competitions, would be nice. Zora 21:42, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Music of Hawaii

I've been working on music of Hawaii for awhile now, and think it's getting quite good. I'll probably put it on PR sometime in the next couple weeks, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Tuf-Kat 08:57, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

TfD nomination of Template:Legal status of Hawaii

Template:Legal status of Hawaii has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you.

A nice infobox, but way too big in screen space for a multi-article template in my opinion. I've recommended substing into the Legal status of Hawaii article and replacing in the other articles that use it with links. Caerwine Caerwhine 02:31, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Do you have any recommendations? If you do, please post your suggestions at the listing of all active Places WikiProjects, and if you have any questions, ask me in the Work Via WikiProjects talk page or directly in my talk page. Thanks a lot! Titoxd(?!? - help us) 18:46, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Spending ten days on Maui

I am spending ten days on Maui from 4/14 through 4/24. Please let me know what photo submissions or articles you have. I will be there with a Nikon D70, a Nikon D200, underwater kit for the Nikons, and my trusty Cybershot. On top of that, I'm armed with the de rigeur travel guides -- lonely planet, frommers, and Maui Revealed. While I haven't contributed to the Hawaii project since the last time I went (about a year ago), I have contributed articles on landmarks (such as Makapuu and on temples such as Kea'iwa Heiau). I'll be heading to Haleakala of course, as a haole tourist. But I intend to see more of the esoteric spots than your average tourist.

Please let me know on my talk page, or at avriette@gmail.com. I will be uploading photos to my flickr site, http://flickr.com/photos/avriette/ while there. I should have internet access at the hotel (which is more than I can say for my home!).

Cane Toad

I am currently trying to bring Cane Toad to featured article status. I am slowly getting there, but I am having problems with the "Introduction to Hawaii" section. It is very lacking, and I was wondering whether someone here could expand it. Being from Australia, it is very hard to get my hands on any info about Cane Toad introductions, other than the Australian experience, which is not just two or three sentences. I will be creating another section called: "Other Introductions", as I don't want to have a seperate section for all the introductions, and most countries have not as serious problems as Austrlaia and Hawaii. Thanks --liquidGhoul 05:21, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Possible article?

There's a concept from the 1960's, apparently, called "Greater Hawaii", referred to in 51st state. I have no idea what the proposals or ideas then-extant were, or I'd write about it myself. If anyone knows anything about it, an article would be great... Cheers, Tomertalk 09:34, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

History buff needed

Please check out List of current and former capital cities in the United States and make sure that Hawaii's capital cities are listed accurately. A word of warning: the page does contain quite a bit of complicated wiki formatting, so if you're not comfortable editing it, just post your changes on the talk page and someone more experienced will apply them to the article.   JEK   19:48, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Nominate articles for Portal:United States

I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Hawaii (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. I'd also like people to weigh in on the nominations and help select what should be featured. Thanks. --Aude (talk contribs) 23:20, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

article tagging

Would you be interested in having User:WatchlistBot tag articles in the Hawaii project? It already updates the project watchlist of articles that are already tagged. It recently went through categories, and tagged many Hawaii related categories which were not previously tagged. I could run it to tag all articles in those categories. Let me know if this would be a useful thing (it would make your project _much_ bigger). Ingrid 19:50, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Task appears complete as of 13 December 2006. I missed Ingrid's original offer, but she was kind enough to ask again. We need to name an award after her. According to WatchlistBot, there are 1885 Hawaii-related pages: 1667 articles, 155 categories, 49 images, 11 templates, and 3 tagged project pages. —Viriditas | Talk 11:44, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Wanted to let you know that WP:BIOGRAPHY has added a "work group" called Politics and government, and so wanted to invite you to participate on any biography-type articles. Invitation to new WikiProject

A new WikiProject has been started, and may be of interest to members here. It is WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. And spread the word to any other interested parties. -Ebyabe 19:39, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 18:37, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Assessment system, and typo on the project page

Hi,

  • I'll toss out an idea to see if it finds any approval. I was wondering if this WikiProject would like to have an Assessment System, following the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team's system. It would provide an opportunity for interested contributors to assess any article in the WikiProject. An example of how this would look can be found at the Ethnic groups articles by quality assessment table. I've done this before; I could set it up in a couple hours.
  • Also on the project page, {{Toc}} is incorrect; it should be {{TOC}} (if that's what you want).
  • I'll wait about a week for responses; in this case I'll take "no response" to equal "no."

Later, --Ling.Nut 21:42, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Please don't wait a week; just go ahead and do it. Thanks for helping out. —Viriditas | Talk 22:31, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the strong support of the suggestion, Viriditas. :-) I'd wanna have some idea that the plan is OK with the consensus of members, or at least with more than one... don't wanna blindside anyone with a major, unannounced project... but thanks again!--Ling.Nut 22:59, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
No problem. I understand your concern, but the project isn't very active, and I can't imagine any good reason why anyone would oppose your work, since it is neither controversial nor problematic, which is why I doubt consensus is required, but please, proceed at your own desired pace. If I can be of any help, please do not hesitate to ask. —Viriditas | Talk 23:20, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, I'll get a start on it tonight... and if anyone objects to the idea, then we can get an admin to delete the categories I create. Cheers! --Ling.Nut 23:57, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
IF the bot hasn't run yet (it may have) results will be here (please do not edit this):
  • --Ling.Nut 01:35, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
  • If this works I'll need an admin's help...--Ling.Nut 03:27, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
  • IT worked (see above); you can see the test version of new WikiProject Hawaii banner box at Talk:spam musubi. Look at the drop-down menu for the "To Do"; you can see the full table at Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Hawaii_articles_by_quality. There are no comments associated with spam musubi; there should be. I'll see what's wrong...
  • I need an admin to delete the current banner template & its talk, and move the test version from my sandbox to the same name as the current version. Then there are three or four cleanup details to be taken care of; maybe some else can do those (they involve editing regular pages, not fooling with templates or categories...)
  • Enjoy!
  • Even tho 'm not from Hawaii and know nothing about it, there is one Hawaiian thing I know about ('cause I'm studying linguistics). I'll write an article about it during/after Christmas break. I'll join the WikiProject now, too.
  • --Ling.Nut 12:44, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
I can help out, but why do you need an admin to delete the template? Just copy and paste the new code, and make a note your in the edit summary? Am I missing something? Let me know which tasks you need completed, and I'll help out. —Viriditas | Talk 20:57, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Several points:
  1. My understanding is that it's a no-no to copy/paste in these situations, since the Talk page exists already, etc.. To follow the letter of the (guideline, rule, whatever), the existing template and its talk should be deleted, then the sand box moved, then finally (and perhaps optionally) the redirect where the sandbox was should be deleted... We also need to replace the existing banner page's Talk with explanatory text anyhow (see below).
  2. To do (editing):
    1. Copy Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups/Assessment. Modify it to meet the needs of this project (esp. remove text about "needs-infobox", since this project doesn't have one; plus also alter the text about what makes something top-high-mid-low importance). Put the modified text here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups/Assessment Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Assessment
    2. Do the same for Template talk:Ethnic groups; place modified version on the talk page of the WikiProject Hawaii banner.
    3. Fix the talk pages of the two articles I experimented on (or I can do that, but we shouldn't forget).
    4. Hmm I think that's it, unless I remember something else. Cheers! --Ling.Nut 21:20, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
In this instance, it's ok to copy and paste your code from your sandbox, because all you are doing is updating the template from your user space. Simply place a delete tag on your userspace sandbox page, requesting a temp page deletion. Copy and pasting from userspace to a template for this reason, and in this instance, is ok. —Viriditas | Talk 21:45, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Are you sure? To speak plainly, I wanna go for an WP:RFA in 6 or 8 months, and I don't want any black marks against me I really wanna follow the guidelines related to GFDL.
  • Besides, does that also hold true for blanking out the existing Talk page and replacing it with the guidelines for use? --Ling.Nut 21:52, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
There's no reason to blank anything. Simply archive old talk, link to it, and add the new guidelines. All you are essentially doing is updating the template. —Viriditas | Talk 22:00, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Ah, the talk page was just a copy of the template anyway! And it was a year old. So I archived it. I also updated the WikiProject banner, as discussed. I'll fix the two Talk pages I experimented with. That leaves all the aforementioned editing for you... the Talk page of the banner is empty at the moment, as is ... Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Assessment.. Will you do those things? --Ling.Nut 23:10, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you want me to do. Can you leave me a message on my talk page? Thanks. —Viriditas | Talk 00:12, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject page formatting

Made some changes to the formatting of the main project page. May make more. Revert if you don't like. Cheers!--Ling.Nut 20:09, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Template

This whole template business is getting bizarre. Adding them by bot is a BAD IDEA -- you end up putting them places where they don't belong. Also, having a huge centered template at the top of talk pages means that the first screen on the talk page is nothing but template. The template should either be LONG and skinny, no more than 1/2 to 1 inch deep, or it should be a small box justified left. By the time various groups finish adding their templates, you have to scroll endlessly to find the first discussion. If people are interested, they'll come here. If they're not, bludgeoning them with a huge template is just a waste of space and readers' time. Zora 00:07, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

I want to apologize. I take full responsbility for causing any confusion. If you look up above, Ingrid graciously offered to tag all articles in Category:Hawaii, except that I missed her original message. She offered again, and now all Hawaii-related articles appear to be tagged. This will enable the project to assess each article (a system that Ling.Nut was kind enough to implement) as well as maintain the workload. Help is needed setting up departments and formatting the project page. There's a lot of work to do, and I would like to see active members choose a specialty or combination of interests (such as Hawaii history, politics, bios, geography, music, etc.) and knock out at least 10 assessments per day. I'm in the process of setting up and adding the proper administrative categories. Ingrid's bot made it possible to even get to this point, so we should worship her as a goddess. Along with Zora, of course. —Viriditas | Talk 09:37, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Hi Zora, I went to your userpage. Is your cat Mehitabel named after Archy and Mehitabel?
  • If you don't like the template, and if you know how to edit templates, you could change the existing one to have a "small" option, see Wikipedia:Talk page templates#Small option.
  • I didn't add the templtes by bot, and... I dunno anything about bots putting templates in the wrong place.. WP:AWB which is not actually a bot, but it makes prepending things to a talk page easy...
  • I do get tired of people using ALL CAPS to MAKE A POINT, and using loaded adjectives like "bizarre" which are typically precursors to a flamewar. You seem to have been around a long time. I hope you'll express yourself a bit more considerately next time... some of us are frazzled enough as it is. Just a thought.
  • Thanks --Ling.Nut 00:29, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, you're right -- I am exhausted and cranky today. Templates in the wrong place? A couple of guys used a bot to put Project India on any articles that contained the word India, which resulted in numerous Persian, Pakistani, Bengadeshi, etc. articles being claimed for India and led to some angry words. If I ask nicely -- can YOU cut the template down to, say, 200 X 200 px or something like that? and set it to right rather than center? I'm OK at wikifying regular prose but I'm still slow and clumsy with tables and templates. Zora 03:29, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

In this case, the bot only tagged articles in Category:Hawaii. I would generally oppose any major changes to the template, except for replacing the image with a clear icon. Zora, if you want to customize how you view the template, this should be possible by modifying your settings. You might need someone to add a line of code for you. I can help find someone to do this for you, if you like. See also: Help:User style. —Viriditas | Talk 09:57, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and my cat is named after Archie and Mehitabel. However, she is not toujours gai. She is the noisiest cat I have ever owned, and she wanders the house complaining about I know not what. Vet says she's fine, she's just noisy. Zora 03:31, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I can work on it, but it willl be a while. I have finals 'til the 16th, then.... mmm my to do list is long and I have relatives to visit for Christmas. But I'll get to it some time or other
Archy and Mehitabel are cool :-) --Ling.Nut 03:33, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 21:59, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Someone added Nicole Kidman to the Hawai'i project. WHAT? What does she have to do with Hawai'i? Does she have a second home here or something? I don't think that's enough to justify her inclusion in the project. I'll wait a day and then remove the tag, unless someone reveals something unexpected about her. (Like, her real name is Leilani De Souza and she went to Farrington.) Zora 22:04, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Kidman was actually born in Hawaii. Hope this helps. Mahalo. --Ali'i 18:23, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Private Beaches in Hawaii?

The article on Kahala refers to "private beaches". I believe State law prohibits the ownership of beaches (defined as the waterline at its highest point). A good example of this is that many of the exclusive subdivisions on Oahu require public access points to beaches. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.135.229.253 (talk) 21:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC).

New article that might need your project tag

Hello, someone tonight created an article on James Jackson Jarves who was the editor of the first weekly newspaper in the Hawaiian Islands, the Polynesian. The article got tagged for a Speedy Delete because the article creator builds articles in a piecemeal fashion, bits and pieces at a time (please see Talk:James Jackson Jarves. I believe that the article should remain and deserves to be part of your project. Ronbo76 01:49, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Ukulele article

The ukulele article definitely need some attention from experienced editors. In my opinion, it does not really deserve the B rating it has now, but should be rated as a start article. There is only one citation in the article and far too many links. Some folks with good Hawaiian reference materials on history and musical instruments should Wikify the article. - Parsa 19:00, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Reassessed to start. I also added the tag for WPMusInst, a project we should collaborate with on this article. —Viriditas | Talk 04:07, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Problems for the ʻOkina Template in German Wikipedia

In August last year I introduced the Template for the ʻOkina in the German Wikipedia. Recently a user started to delete the template links in the article de:Hawaii which I refused to accept. That user cannot see certain representations of the ʻOkina due to well known problems of the MS Internet Explorer.

The Internet Explorer sometimes doesn't display charakters encoded in UTF-8 (Unicode) properly. This problem is well known in the German Wikipedia:
as well as in the Meta-Wiki which was shifted to UTF-8 encoding, too:

Currently there's a Mediation Committee discussing the subject. I proposed a workaround for the MSIE (MSIE und UTF-8, in German):

The workaround has two steps:
  1. Choose a font for the display of websites in MSIE containing most of the needed characters, e.g. Arial Unicode MS or Lucida Sans Unicode. If there isn't any of those fonts installed this has to be done first.
  2. Set up the MSIE to ignore the font demanded by the Website for display. With this option activated, MSIE chooses the font for display designated in the first step.
Of course this is a change of display only, and the content will be not effected. Moreover this setting can be revoked easily, if not needed anymore (other website or with IE 7 which seems not to have the problem).

But the counterparty don't want to accept. He argues, that this workaround is not reasonable for users with the MSIE. If you're interested to discuss this, you may check this page (in German):

If you want to vote (Pro: the workaround is reasonable, i.e. the ʻOkina template can be used), please include your signature or provide a link to your account in the English Wikipedia. Thank you in advance for consideration, ThT 18:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Hawaii Image

Aloha kākou! I have a suggestion to make in reference to the Image:Wikiprojecthawaii.PNG. Since it is the purpose of this group to improve all Hawaiʻi related articles and to reach a consensus on how different aspects of Hawaiiana (for a lack of a better term) is incorporated in the Hawaiʻi related articles, I think it is only appropriate that the map used in the WikiProject Hawaii Image include Niʻihau. Or should I say, that Niʻihau be labeled on the map. I do realize that it is the Forbidden Isle, and that it is NOT labeled on many malihini maps. But, looking at the overall goal/objective of this WikiProject, I feel that we should give the Niihauans the credit they deserve. ʻE ala ʻe! I am open and curious to hear someone else's manaʻo. I will give this a week, MAYBE two, to culminate and then, if I hear or see no objections, I will work on fixing this slight, but in this case, significant oversight. Mālama pono! A hui hou. -- Kanaka maoli i puuwai 05:47, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

I would definitely support your plan! In fact, be bold and do so when you have the time! Sr13 (T|C) ER 05:58, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Sr13. Thanks for your support. I was bold and I went ahead and made one. It is not the best, as I am not an expert when it comes to art. I have NOT uploaded it yet because I am not 100% sure how to "replace" the current pic with my new one. I would like to keep the file name the same as not to have to go and change links and add redirects. Kanaka maoli i puuwai 07:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
When you're ready to upload the new image, click on the image page Image:Wikiprojecthawaii.PNG and click on "Upload a new version of this file" under the picture. this will overwrite the old file, but still maintain the old versions in case we decide we want to revert back. HTH HAND --Ali'i 13:41, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
What are your thoughts on Kahoʻolawe? Should it get labeled as well, or is that too much? Mahalo. --Ali'i 13:39, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Aloha Aliʻi. I am glad that you mentioned Kahoʻolawe. Thanks for bringing that one up. I will add that one as well. If there is anyone out there that is an expert at graphic art, then please feel free to give this one a try. I am sure you are way better than me. I will go ahead and add mine and then if you dont like it, or someone can do better, then my image can always be replaced. Kanaka maoli i puuwai 16:57, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
You could always ask Gerald Farinas (the original creator of the image to tweak it himself)... I'll shoot him a note about this discussion. --Ali'i 17:18, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Oh, you've already done so. Nm. --Ali'i 17:19, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi everyone! I guess a lot of you sent me emails since I created WikiProjectHawaii and the theme image. If anyone feels compelled to be bold and create a new theme logo for WikiProjectHawaii, please do so and upload it! --Gerald Farinas 22:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Aloha kākou! I edited the image and replaced it using the "Update this image" feature. Mahalo nui Gerald for your support! The image does not look quite the way it did on here as it did on my PC when I made the changes. If anyone out there knows a better way to do this, then please, feel free to replace mine. I only want to give Niʻihau and Kahoʻolawe the credit that they are due. Aloha ahiahi! Kanaka maoli i puuwai 04:02, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

It would be nice if someone could create a transparent image, as we're not supposed to change the color of the project box. —Viriditas | Talk 20:11, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

At the request of Viriditas, I humbly present Evan Dobelle to your attention. I'd never heard of the man before I stumbled upon a lengthy reversion war happening between two single-purpose accounts. The matter under dispute was whether there should be a paragraph on Dobelle's messy departure from the presidency of the University of Hawaii. I did some research, and it seemed like the event was important to his career and well documented by reliable sources, and it also seemed to me like the person who was removing it was more concerned with keeping unhappy events out of the article than with neutrality and accuracy. So I stepped in and, when offering discussion didn't help (the blanker actually refuses to discuss it on the talk page, if I understand her edit summaries correctly), I insisted that the paragraph stay unless some good reason be produced to remove it. I'd love for a few people to take a look at the the article history and the talk page and weigh in- am I in the right here? I can't get my anonymous opponant to even explain her objections, and I feel all alone. -FisherQueen (Talk) 01:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Manual of Style

Please help develop a Manual of Style for Hawaii-related articles here. —Viriditas | Talk 02:08, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Okinas in town names

As I was wandering through the articles on the cities listed on Template:Hawaii, I observed that some towns are named "___, Hawaii", while others are named "___, Hawaiʻi". It would be less confusing if all were one way or another; could someone fix this in a fashion appropriate to this WikiProject's standards? Thanks! Nyttend 05:05, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, which way should we try and standardize it? I know there was some big discussion over using common name versus the local spelling versus common english letters. For my opinion, titles should be at the most common name (per the Manual of Style), so would be located at "___, Hawaii", with the first sentence saying something like, "... the largest city in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi." Or something to that effect. Basically no okina in the title, but okinas in the main text of the article where warranted. Other people's thoughts? --Ali'i 13:48, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Agree on the title. —Viriditas | Talk 09:06, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Since this would be a rather large task, is there someone who might be able and willing to run a bot to move any articles and fix double redirects? I don't know how to do a bot, so I am worthless. Else, it's just one at a time by hand. Mahalo. --Ali'i 17:09, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
I'd like to add a note of agreement with Ali'i's comments above - I think we should have nothing besides standard 7-bit ASCII in page names (so that URL's work nicely on many many browsers), but we should use ʻokinas and kahakōs in the text as appropriate. It would also be great if an appropriate set of redirects were available so you could, if desired, use the full diacritical spelling for a link, although it should be avoided within Wikipedia. Well, that's my two cents, at least. Davidlwilliamson (talk) 08:12, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Hawaii State Plan

The dKosopedia has articles about the Hawaii State Plan and the Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Plan. We could import these wholesale (with link back to the original) because dKosopedia is also a GFDL project. They'd need some wikification but they'd at least provide a start. I'm not knowledgeable about Hawaii, so before being bold and using these articles to create stubs, I wanted to see if the experts know of a reason not to do it. JamesMLane t c 22:15, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

It might be best to merge both of those articles into a broader article, such as Urban planning and sustainability in Hawaii, so that the article could have room for expansion. —Viriditas | Talk 09:13, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
That might be an orphan article. I don't know what would ever link to it, or who would ever search for it. "Hawaii State Plan" is a proper noun that seems more appropriate for an article title.
I see your point about expansion. Maybe the solution s an article on Hawaii State Plan, incorporating the information about the 2050 Sustainability Plan, and also incorporating any similar future developments or amendments. JamesMLane t c 15:02, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Be bold. IMO, it wouldn't be an orphan article (I can think of at least a dozen articles that would link to it) but you're right, not many people would search for it. I can see a need for Sustainable agriculture in Hawaii and other related articles. It looks like Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Task Force is the primary article. —Viriditas | Talk 19:21, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Greetings! I have just created the article on Hawaii wine as part of the Wine Project's effort to create at least a start class quality article on the wines and wine industry in all 50 states. Unfortunately there are not a lot of resources out there on Hawaiian wine and I was wondering if members of the Hawaii project would be interested in looking at the article and assisting in it's expansion. A particular area of need is info about the history of winemaking in Hawaii. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration! AgneCheese/Wine 17:09, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Apology Resolution

  • Talk:Apology Resolution#Dispute - Apology Resolution - Current dispute focuses on these two competing edits. Is United States Public Law 103-150 acknowledged or does it require qualification as "alleged"? Is the use of "numerous historical sources" and "many historians and researchers" simply weasel words needing attribution, or POV pushing? Include or exclude Russ, Tate, Daws, and Stevens?
    • Proposed solution:Determine if qualifier is needed. Replace WP:WEASEL words with attribution.

Source for Names & Bios of Hawaii Residents

In November 2005, Honolulu Magazine chose a list of their choices of the 100 most influential citizens of the last 100 years. The articles, with pics and bios are on line at: Honolulu Magazine Many of their nominees are NOT on this list, including: Eddie Aikau, Neal Blaisdell, Charles Campbell, Jack de Mello, Jon de Mello, Webley Edwards, Frank Fasi, Jack Hall, Abigail Kawananakoa, Hal Lewis aka J. Akuhead Pupule, Ah Quon McElrath, Mary Kawena Pukui, Maurice Sullivan, Rell Sunn, Madge Tennent, and several more. Each of the people on this list deserves a Wikipedia article, IMHO. The bios are a good starting place for these articles. --DaKine 02:14, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I speedied Unorganized Hawaii State Militia on the grounds that there was no assertion of notability. However, when I went to delete the Talk Page, I noticed that it was tagged as being under the purview of WikiProject Hawaii so I figured I would restore the article and ask here first. Anybody want to argue for or against keeping this article? Please answer on Talk:Unorganized Hawaii State Militia.

No evidence of notability, however, one could merge this into Brotherhood Rally of All Veterans Organizations, Hawaii if anyone felt that group was notable. Delete for now. —Viriditas | Talk 10:41, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Proposed change to Manual of Style

There's a proposal [2] to change the Manual of Style to reduce the usage of okina's and kahako's in articles about Hawaii. Discussion would be great! Erudy 18:38, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Just to give the members of this project a heads-up, 24.148.25.3 (talk · contribs) removed the {{okina}} templates from three articles using edit summaries that stated, "Removed okinas, as this is an English wiki, not a Hawaiian one." As the usage of this template is still under debate, I went ahead and reverted the deletions and issued [3] a {{uw-delete1}} warning. --Kralizec! (talk) 05:40, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:58, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
