Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am Annointed777. I am very new to Wikipedia and would love to help anyone I can. I have the most knowledge in Thoroughbred trainers, jockeys, breeding and stake Races. I have owned and bred Arabian show horses so I also understand a lot about medication and injuries in horses and have been following Thoroughbred racehorses for years. I haven't started a page on my own yet, but would love to get to that point. In the meantime, I am happy to contribute, do research or help in anyway I can. I am so happy I found this group!!! Thank you @Wiki Project Horse Racing: (Annointed777 (talk))Annointed777 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annointed777 (talkcontribs) 06:12, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Annointed777, unsure if you have joined Wiki Commons too, we could always use new photos, if you know of any Wikipedia articles that are photo-less, trainers, owners, jockeys, and could take a snap or 2 and upload them to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page thats always welcome.James Kevin McMahon (talk) 14:55, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sire line tree?

[edit]

An editor is adding sections titled "sire line tree" in many named-horse articles. This term isn't described in any of the equine glossaries in Wikipedia, nor wiktionary, nor in any of several equine dictionaries and encyclopedias I have checked.

  1. What is it?
  2. What reliable source describes what this is?

  ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 02:35, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I figured it out, added it to the glossary, and created a redirect for Sire line pointing to Glossary of equestrian terms#sire line. In articles, these lengthy-vertical lists should be collapsed. I have been using {{collapse top|title=[[Sire line]] descent tree}} and {{collapse bottom}}.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 19:23, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification

[edit]

Draft:Foxford (horse) 1) Is this how we should do draft horse bio articles?

2) A big job, but I started moving Trainer articles from Category:horse trainers to Category:racehorse trainers. However, after looking at Baseball, Football, Hockey players etc., they all have a precise category(s) designation. i.e. Major League Baseball third basemen, American Football Quarterbacks. Also, check out the Categories in "man-vehicle" list of Stirling Moss. I think we should follow what appears to be Wikipedia standardization but without going overboard & suggest Category:American Thoroughbred racehorse trainers - American Standardbred racehorse trainer. Would like opinions. Thanks. Xavier Newcombe. — Preceding undated comment added 10:07, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've just added a page for Ken Kling, who through his comic strip Joe and Asbestos (1924-1968) and his long-running tip sheet Joe & Asbestos Sports Weekly (!930s into at least the '60s, with someone continuing it in the '70s after Kling's death) was the most visible picker of horses for much of the 20th century. I'm coming at it from reasonable working knowledge of comics, but less of horse racing, so it might be good if someone gave it a look over and polish from that angle. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 15:40, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Quarter" vs "Quater"

[edit]

I was browsing for spelling errors for "quarter" spelled as "quater" on the site and found a large number of horse-related articles that use "quater" instead of "quarter," especially horse names. Initially, I just assumed a misspelling and changed the spelling to "quarter," but I began to see more articles related to horses where this spelling was used. When I searched the terms and specific horses, it appeared both spellings are widely used in this field and also seem to be used interchangeably (even for the same horse). I have no specialized knowledge or experience in regards to horses or horse racing, so this is far out of my field. I have stopped making changes related to this spelling for the time being, but some guidance for the future would be helpful on whether these spellings should be changed or not. Thanks! Wikipedialuva (talk) 11:09, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like a derivative of the word quaternary which means 1. consisting of fours or by fours 2. fourth in a series 3. chemistry: containing or being an atom bound to four other atoms or groups: a quaternary ammonium compound 4. mathematics: having four variables. https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/quaternaries James Kevin McMahon (talk) 12:15, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipedialuva:, you may want to cross-post at WikiProject Equine also. My guess is 90% of these will be typos where “Quarter” is intended—especially if the topic is related to the American Quarter Horse breed. The rest are probably situations where they meant to say Qatar, as the UAE nations are quite active in horse racing. Montanabw(talk) 06:02, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category change suggestion

[edit]

I recently changed all the trainer articles "American horse trainers" categories to "American racehorse trainers". It was a lot of work but nevertheless it still leaves questions and possible editing errors. I found there was a distinct Category for trainers of harness racing horses so would ask for input on again changing what I already did to one of these choices:
Category:American Thoroughbred racehorse trainers
Category:American trainers of Thoroughbred racehorses Xavier Newcombe (talk) 16:55, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Xavier Newcombe:, I recommend leaving it as just America racehorse trainers. We also have Quarter Horse racing, Arabian racing, mule racing… if the harness racing people want their own category, they can have one, but we have people who work cross-disciplines and such, so we definitely need the general one. Updates and formatting fixes needed on many jockey articles.

[edit]

Due to Handicapper's outdated formatting (such as including place of birth in lede sentences, no adjectives such as "American", "Panamanian", and constant out-of-format articles for jockeys), a lot of their articles are in need of getting them to standards seen for NFL and pro sports players. 9mm.trilla (talk) 20:07, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect cross-tagging of horseracing articles to WikiProject Equine

[edit]

Please do not add horse racing articles to the WP:WikiProject Equine unless there is some other connection besides horse racing. Several articles of individual "race horses" have come across my awareness, and I am now removing wikipjt equine from their talk pages (potentially over 200 articles just for Japanese horses).   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 20:21, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Probably isn’t any of the regulars here, but wise if everyone keeps an eye out for these and fixes them. Might be a few horses who need double tagging, if they are linked in non-WPHR horse articles, but that can be determined on a case by case basis. If there’s 200 articles on Japanese horses, though, yikes! I’m suspicious of stuff being mass-generated. Or paid editors. Or just not-notable .Montanabw(talk) 05:56, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

International racing stats

[edit]

Hey gang, for some reason, I felt the need to do a cleanup and substantial expansion of Joao Moreira (jockey). I brought it mostly up to speed (not sure the stats list at the bottom is needed, but I also don’t have time to review it in depth, so kept for now), but what I don’t know is how to find his total races run and won because he raced worldwide and all Equibase has are his 17 US Races. Any help much appreciated, or if anyone wants to pop over there and tweak the piece further, that’s fine with me. Montanabw(talk) 06:56, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Jonjo O'Neill (jockey) to Jonjo O'Neill (trainer)

[edit]

The Article Jonjo O'Neill (jockey), needs to be changed to Jonjo O'Neill (trainer). He retired from being a jockey in the late 1980's and became a racehorse trainer, which he still is. His son Jonjo O'Neill Jr, is his stable jockey. I would change the article title myself but not sure how to do that.James Kevin McMahon (talk) 09:28, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Usual practice is to use (horseman) or (horse racing) where the subject has had more than one career - e.g. Paul Nicholls (horse racing). You can create a requested move for the article. Bcp67 (talk) 21:08, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely, Jonjo O'Neill (horse racing) would be very good. If anyone knows how to move this article thus, I will be very grateful. And probably so would Jonjo. James Kevin McMahon

MLB’s WAR STAT

[edit]

It’s a somewhat controversial stat due to the less than absolutes applied for values. There is the potential for a lot of money at stake for a player and team rosters. CMack9901 (talk) 02:57, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Missing tags for Horse racing wikiproject

[edit]

Today I unPRODed the article Chute (racecourse). Though it wasn't tagged for WP:WikiProject Horse racing, it was tagged for WP:WikiProject Equine (which I subscribe to). I added two sources, but it could use more. However, I am not familiar with horse racing and will not be continuing to clean up that article.

Since it wasn't tagged on the talk page for WPHorseRacing, members here wouldn't have been notified that it was being PRODed (or potentially later AFDed by the PROD nominee). So, I checked all the articles in Category:Horse racing terminology and added the missing {{WikiProject Horse racing}} to the following articles' talk pages:

What I'm getting at is that members of this project might want to check other categories of horse racing articles and make sure that the talk pages are appropriately tagged for this wikiproject, so that future PRODs and AFDs don't cause articles to be lost/deleted without you even being notified.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 15:02, 31 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

[edit]

Hello all, I'm Hexes54. I'm very new to editing Wikipedia but hope I can help where I can. I primarily focus on grammar, punctuation, and tone edits but I can probably reach out to other things when I feel more confident. I'm interested in Japanese horse racing however I can't say I'm the most knowledgeable, but I still want to help as much as I'm able. I also have some knowledge on British horse racing as someone who grew up around parents who were also interested in it. I hope we can all get along :) Hexes54 (talk) 11:39, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Very, very barebones draft on Matikanefukukitaru I've just submitted. I've only added some basic info to the infobox so far. Any and all help is greatly appreciated :) Hexes54 (talk) 12:48, 11 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Hexes54, missed this earlier but I think this is looking quite good so far! I'd never heard about the poll for Matikanefukukitaru's name so that was an interesting read.
I might make some formatting changes later on, but if you were interested in taking this page further, I think the main area that needs a bit more expansion is the Stud career section. Is there any other info on this part of his life, such as stud fee or other notable (or even lack of) offspring? Unfortunately I couldn't find much info on the horse's later life, though I did come across this article mentioning that several of his fans specifically came to visit him for good luck, which could be worth including.
As an aside, not sure if you're aiming for a specific wiki-rating with your work, but if you're looking for a future GA rating you'll unfortunately most likely get pulled up over MOS:POPCULT on his "In popular culture" section. No desire to remove the reference myself since Umamusume is probably one of the main reasons people are checking out this page, but is there any more info you could add about the game/anime's impact in relation to the real-life horse? Gold Ship's page is a great example to follow here, though I appreciate Mati's a more niche character. RandomEditsForWhenIRemember (talk) 13:35, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review for the Japan Cup

[edit]

Hi all, over the last two months I've given the article for the Japan Cup a very large overhaul and expansion. Since the majority of the page is now my work, I'm keen to hear other people's suggestions. I have started a peer review page to see what would be the next stages to get the article to GA status, and if that goes well, seeing what work would be involved to progress it to FA afterwards. If you have time, please consider having a look at the page and adding your thoughts to the peer review page here.

Many thanks, RandomEditsForWhenIRemember (talk) 22:10, 13 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job! Just a couple of comments with the winner's list. You've added columns with nationality for breeding, trainer and owner. For the horse international standardization has the breeding nation right after the horse's name. As far as owner and trainer this is a bit of an overkill, IMO but if needed the flag of the nation can be added as done with association football players. Usually in the records section of the event we have biggest margin of victory. Also its nice to have the purse total historically in that chart as well. Brudder Andrusha (talk) 09:51, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good to see the article expanded. I've just gone through and turned the section headings to sentence case, I'll have more of a look later on. Bcp67 (talk) 14:53, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick response both, looking forward to your later look-in if you have time @Bcp67!
@Brudder Andrusha I've had a go at addressing your comments - the table itself was actually the main component of this article that was there before I starting editing, though the "Winners by nationality" and "Records" sections (and a few corrections to the winner table) were my additions.
  • Largest margin of victory: Alongside the shortest, this is added now - this was Tap Dance City's incredible wire-to-wire victory in 2003 at nine lengths.
  • Purse totals: This is actually something I looked into earlier on. Unfortunately, unlike other races where the purse has been included, this doesn't always appear to have been recorded online! I tracked down a few news articles from some years that give a rough number (albeit usually in dollars or pounds or euros rather than yen), but for some years especially early on there's genuinely nothing available. Luckily a few places have recorded the prize pool for the top five placing horses for every year; I've added a column for it to the table, I think it still gives a good overview of how the prize pool increases over the event's history.
  • Breeding flag/info after the horses name: I wanted to check I'd understood you correctly before making any changes on this one; did you mean something along the lines of one of the options I've posted here? Out of them C would easily be my personal choice, though any is fine with me as long as it's still easy enough for a reader to mentally transfer the info there to the "Winners by nationality" table.
On including the flags, it looks like about a decade back on the talk page there was a debate on flag use on the page/horse racing in general, though I have no idea if that's still the consensus or not (and having a glance at the history page, the version of the page that started that discussion just had flags in each of the three columns, which IMO did look a absolute eyesore and would only get worse with the sea of Japan flags that'd be there now https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Japan_Cup&oldid=397239556). Personally I think it's fine to include on this page, since it's an international race. RandomEditsForWhenIRemember (talk) 22:03, 16 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Brudder Andrusha, would you be able to have a quick glance at my sandbox ? Since the above response I've added another make-up to the page where I made every name on each row flagged, and I was curious if you had a preference for any of the four options. The latter version is definitely more consistent, but I wasn't sure if the sheer amount of Japan flags towards the end was too overpowering.
No real rush my end; unfortunately there's not much movement on the peer review page so I was going to go ahead and put this forward for a GAN later this week (though I imagine that'll take a good while too looking at the size of the sports review section...), but a few days delay doesn't hurt this early on. International Federation of Horseracing Authorities

[edit]

Hi all, when working on the above I noticed the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities page just redirected to the World's Best Racehorse Rankings page, which was a confusing mix up of the two subjects that starts talking about the Rankings then veers into a deep dive of the IFHA's structure. It also just directly lifts whole chunks of text from the IFHA's website...

Since I think the IFHA is worth its own page, and probably one that should be linked to by quite a few horceracing authority pages, while it's a bit of a dry read I've had a stab at creating it and cleaned up the Rankings page. I would say it's past a stub entry and into "start" category, but obviously compared to something like FIFA there wasn't much I could find. Most of the online news about it comes from IFHA or IFHA affiliated websites, and IFHA's website isn't particularly easy to navigate! Since it's very much a background entity that I don't 'think' has been involved in many scandals, there isn't a ton to write about here despite its relative importance.

Still, if anyone has any more information (or sources!) they can think to add, I'd definitely be thankful. Rather frustratingly, within moments of creating the page a user has both tried to wipe the article and then left an "AI generated" tag on it, an accusation I definitely don't appreciate, so the more this page can be expanded the better. Just created and translated a new horse page - Red Desire

Hello. Just a new guy who joined the project not long ago. I just translated and paraphrasing Red Desire into english wiki. Feel free to correct or improve it. Any suggestion reply here! Lowyat Slyder (talk) 20:02, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome! A lot of my work here is also translating articles on Japanese horses so I'm happy to see someone else who is also interested in it. As for your article on Red Desire, I've edited some of your language to be less conversational and more encyclopedic in some areas. With advice for your next article, when referring to races it's better to say for example "the Arima Kinen" instead of just "Arima Kinen". I hope you continue to contribute to the project and thank you for your work! :) Hexes54 (talk) 09:00, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
