Category:Anoxic basins[edit]

Category:Anoxic basins has been proposed to be renamed. It currently covers salt water basins, but the rename may expand coverage to also cover small freshwater lakes. (talk) 05:02, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Lake Erie revamp proposed in sandbox here[edit]

I'm looking for feedback on a proposed revamp of Lake Erie. If anybody has suggestions, advice, ideas, I'm interested. I've never done a lake article before so I'm kind of a lake article virgin.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 06:17, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguating lakes[edit]

There are four "Trout Lake"s in the Northwest Territories (NWT). One is a community, Trout Lake, Northwest Territories and it sits on "Trout Lake (Dehcho Region, Northwest Territories)". However there are two others with the same name and both of them are in the same region, North Slave Region. Any ideas on how to get them both as there are no smaller divisions of the NWT. Re-name of Lake Parramatta (New South Wales)[edit]

I was always under the impression that geographic locations should only be used on pages if the location name was shared by more than one place (and there was a disambiguation page for it). I can't imagine there being any other Lake Parramatta's in the world and if so surely this is the most notable one. So unless I get any objections from here I shall be bold and move it? Any feedback please do put it here, don't want to tread on anyones toes! Cls14 (talk) 10:27, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

date-flooded paramter for Infobox Lake[edit]

The |date-flooded= parameter of {{Infobox lake}}, removed in this edit should be restored; it's needed for (and already used in) articles about reservoirs, in some cases for reservoirs where that date is known, but the construction date is not. My {{Editprotected}}} request to have that done has been temporarily declined with a request that I raise the matter here. Any cogent objections? Update needed for WikiProject banner[edit]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Lakes/Articles/with Infobox is linked from the {{WikiProject Lakes}} banner . The list will always be out of date unless it is forever being manually updated. Category:WikiProject Lakes articles is a more definitive list, and if there is going to be a link on the banner to all the lake article the category would be a better option. Personally, I don't see the need for a link in the project banner to a list or category of lake articles. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 07:44, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Request to add Lake Chaplain to list of largest lakes in US by volume 25.8 km^3[edit]

It appears that Lake Champlain has been omitted from the list of the largest lakes by volume,

The Lake Champlain article: shows a volume of 25.8 km^3 which would place it 17th on the list — Preceding unsigned comment added by Greyboar (talkcontribs) 04:09, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England[edit]

I can easily believe that Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, but I came to the article on lake Windermere hoping to find an inline citation that said so. Is there such a citation, and I missed it? If not, can one be supplied? No response to asking this question on the talk:Windermere page, so I am asking again here. --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:40, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Lake Pinatubo, need citation for maximum and average depth[edit]

I just reviewed past online articles posted on Lake Pinatubo and did not find any reference or citation documenting Wikipedia's report that the lake's depth is about 800m, which is a fantastic depth given it's small circumference and surface area. I did find an article referencing the lake's depth at about 85 meters, which seems more plausible. My initial reaction is that the depth currently listed for Lake Pinatubo in Wikipedia is not credible and should be removed from both the listing of maximum and average depths of lakes of the world. Lake Holiday, Virginia[edit]

This article is a mess. I have only come upon it in the last month or so, but apparently about two years ago, this article about a lake got taken over by first the owner of the resort that borders it and then by a group of disgruntled homeowners. I cannot even tell if the article is supposed to be about the lake or the community. HELP! Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:35, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Resources section[edit]

I just joined this project last week. I write articles about lakes, mainly in Florida. I added in the Resources section of this project page information about four sites I have found useful. The Florida Lakewatch and Fishing Works websites always provide useful information. The Hook and Bullet and websites sometimes have useful information for writing lake articles. Hart Lake[edit]

FYI, there's proposal on the table to merge Hart Lake (Oregon) into the Warner Valley article. (Warner Valley is where Hart Lake in located) Both Wiki-Oregon and Wiki-Lakes previously gave Hart Lake article a B-Class article rating. Recently, someone from Wiki-Oregon nominated Hart Lake article for upgrade to level. However, reviewer is recommending Hart Lake article be merging into Warner Valley because of overlapping content. The other alternative under consideration is to strip out all the info common to both articles from Hart Lake in order to eliminate overlap. This would remove most of the geography, history, plant and wildlife, and recreation text from Hart Lake, leaving only the hydrology and fish info. Don't think anyone from Wiki-Lakes group has weighed in on this issue yet. If you're interested, discussion is located on Hart Lake Talk Page.--Orygun (talk) 19:40, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

List of lakes of Kazakhstan[edit]

List of lakes of Kazakhstan is available for those interested in Kazakhstan, but no list of lakes of Utah. Should the Lakes project seek to have more lists? Should the lists include all lakes, or only the more important ones? List of lakes of Kazakhstan says it is a list of the more important ones. There is also the template {{Lakes of Kazakhstan}}, which does not have all the lakes in the List of lakes of Kazakhstan. Also there is yet another list at Category:Lakes of Kazakhstan.

I must admit that I just created Bartogay Lake, in Kazakistan, and Oowah Lake, in Utah, but those lakes made me think about the general issue of lists of lakes, and what those who want good coverage of lakes would suggest about lists, templates, and categories, and consistency among them, if any.

What do other editors think about a policy? --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:17, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Apparently no one cares about lists of lakes. I will try to get the Kazakhstan situation fixed myself, and will look into automated ways to create lists of lakes for US states and other countries at Wikimania2014 Hackathon.--DThomsen8 (talk) 04:15, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Hydrography resources for BC and Canada[edit]

I happened to find a few things linked through the main BC Names/GeoBC page last night, where sizes of water basins, lengths of streams, elevation data for lakes and streams, flow rates etc can all be found/cited; I haven't explored these fully, just dropping the links for others to have as a resource when working on lake/river articles:

WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Merging name+state lake list into state lake list[edit]

There are long list articles, like List of lakes of Alaska or List of lakes in Oregon, some of which have coordinate entries for each lake. There are other, shorter, WP:SIA set index articles, like Summit Lake (Alaska) or List of lakes named Summit Lake in British Columbia. Having these more narrow SIAs makes maintenance of the data more difficult, and also may be too narrow of a topic for a list article.

Midas02, other editors, and I were discussing at Talk:Summit Lake (Alaska), and it seems that the best solution is to merge the more specific list articles into the state/province list articles, adding coordinates to the list articles. This would make the state/province list of lakes more useful, but perhaps too large.

We're contemplating doing the merge for the specific case of Summit Lake, and the state/provinces of British Columbia, Alaska, and Oregon. But, this could be precedent-setting for other lake list articles. You're welcome to join the discussion at Talk:Summit Lake (Alaska)#New merge proposal. —hike395 (talk) 20:24, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Are real lakes intrinsically notable?--Mr. Guye (talk) 22:07, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

See WP:GEOLAND, the relevant bit would be;
Named natural features are often notable, provided information beyond statistics and coordinates is known to exist. This includes mountains, lakes, streams, islands, etc. The number of known sources should be considered to ensure there is enough verifiable content for an encyclopedic article...Jokulhlaup (talk) 09:43, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Bierstadt Lake[edit]

How wonderful to find the very specific lakes WikiProject!

I created this article, but I haven't been able to find information about the lake's width, depth, and area. Is there something for water body information, like the GNIS geonames site? Or, how I might format a google search query to get this? ("Bierstadt Lake" area OR depth OR length returns of a lot of info, but not what I'm looking for).

Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:03, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

Notice to participants at this page about adminship[edit]

Many participants here create a lot of content, may have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.

So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

Many thanks and best wishes,

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject[edit]

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject[edit]

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:58, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
