What is the nationalism?

Today in Mexico this word is too used and maybe is boried to talk about. Ernest Gellner (Sociedad y Desarrolllo en Mèxico, Guzmàn Nora, Mèxico: Edit. Castillo, 2002), says that someone belongs to a Nation if anyone has the same believes, the same culture, the same territory. Nevertheles this characteristcs don`t apply to some nations in the world. Particularly about Mexico, we are many Mexicos. Is not the same, a person who lives in the coast comparative with anotther who lives in the monuntain or in the Lacandona forest in south of Mèxico. Sometimes we think nationalism is love our national flag, o to sing the mexican Himn o to defend our borders. I don`t Know if someone in Mexico believes in, but in other nations the nationalism is to be a very good citizen and defend so the national believes.

Alixb and I are going to start a project of providing Info-Boxes for each municipality in Mexico. Alixb said that we should use the Template:Infobox Settlement to work on this project. To avoid overlapping, please enter the municipality that you are working on below.

Here is the page of all municipalities in Mexico, an idea of Richard: List of Mexican municipalities. It allows us to get an overview of how many municipalities we still need to work on. Thanks for the idea, Richard!

When you are done with a municipality, don't forget to document it by moving the line into the 'done' section.

Help with Zhenli Ye Gon

Please take a look at article Zhenli Ye Gon. A Spanish-language source was given as a reference that Zhenli Ye Gon was born in Hong Kong. But according to both Washington Post[1] and New York Times[2], he was born in Shanghai. I don't read Spanish, so can a Spanish-reading editor please verify that the Spanish-language source actually backs up the claim that he was born in Hong Kong? Hi, I read the spanish article that was provided and in it does not even state that he was born in Hong Kong or as a matter of fact it dosent even state where he was born, all it provides is a date for when he was born. According to an important newspaper of Mexico (EL Univeral), Zhenli Ye Gon was born in Shanghai. He moved to Mexico in 1990 and get the Mexican nationality in 2002. When he moved to Mexico he created an important company called Unimed, this company was specialized on the selling of pseudoefedrina. He begun to appear on the news because the government found an important amount of money in his house, the government suspected that he was a drug trafficker, this is because the pseudoefedrina is also used to made metanfetamina (drug). Wikipedia project Toluca Mexico

As my students will be coming in here in about 2 weeks... I was wondering if/how to update the list of things that need doing? One of their assignments is to find a page that screams "oh man, this needs help" and work on it (add info, revise info, update info, add citations, reorganize info...etc) they will print the page and propose the changes to me. (Im looking for informational editing changes, not technological ones). If you need to know more about my class project, see the navigation bar that is on my user page. It links to the pages associated with the projects my students are doing.

The stub page helps but what I am looking for are pages that need serious editing. The stubs are fine for when they need ideas for writing a full article but Im looking for articles they will want to update, reorganize, elaborate on ideas - things like that. I would just like to make a small change to the main Mexico page in English in the Geography:Biodiversity section - Biosphere Reserves are not "not altered" by humans - they may have been extensively altered or still used for sustainable activities - eg. fishing, wood extraction. The are cited by CONANP (National Park Service) as being important for representative species and habitats, especially endangered and endemic species. I can't seem to edit the Mexico main article page. Thanks for any help with this. Alyssa

Machine translations?

I recently read several articles on former political parties and politicians, and I'm under the impression a lot of them are machine translations of Spanish. I've corrected several of them; sometimes I had to leave out pieces that had become incomprehensible. I'd like to call on everybody here not to use machine translations and if some people can look out for them and try to correct them into proper English that would be nice as well. About Geographic Info-Box Project

I have a lot of doubts about this project. I dont understand the meaning of an info box clearly but i would like to help. The project started with municipalties of Zacatecas, but what if we want to contribute with information about municipalties from other states?. Mexican municipality template

On my talk page User talk:Thelmadatter, I proposed a template to use as a kind of "cheat sheet" to allow my students to contribute to Wikipedia in a timely way. Richardshusr, Wikipedia god that he is, has made my outline into a template at Template:Mexican_municipality. I would like the community to take a look at this template and tweak it so I can start using it with my student in the coming semester (January). We can also put in an infobox to it so all Mexican municipalities can have one without my students having to learn how to do it from scratch (just fill in the information). Names with and without accent marks/name variants

As my students were looking for topics to write for their assignments, we ran into a problem finding articles that truly didnt exist. This was problematic particularly with biographies as many Spanish names have accent marks and names of foreigners are changed slightly when written about in Spanish. An example of the first problem is Raúl Velasco and of the second Maxim Gorky known as Máximo Gorki in Spanish. In both these cases, my students thought they had found a topic only to be corrected by myself or another Wikipedian. Generally, we do not use accent marks in English and I do not understand why these names would have them in the English language Wikipedia. Most native speakers and non-Spanish-speaking non-native speakers would never think to include them. The alternatives that appear below as a search are not terribly obvious. For cases like Raúl Velasco, I recommend that the variation without the accent mark be the English language form and the form with the accent mark work as a redirect. In cases like Maxim Gorky, the solution is less obvious.Thelmadatter 16:00, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Toluca article

The article on Toluca is classified as a B category.... which I take to mean barely acceptable. But this was assigned to it before my students made improvements. I would like to know how to get it re-evaluated. I will also have my January students go over it for more improvements. Who knows? Maybe we can get this to something appoaching featurable. Emiliano Zapata

There is currently a claim on the Afro-Mexican article that Zapata was Afro-Mexican. They don't cite this claim and until I saw it there I had never heard anyone even mention Afro-Mexican and Zapata in the same sentence let alone make the claim that he was one. Mass tagging of Mesoamerican articles with WP:Mexico banners

The recent bot-assisted mass tagging of (it would seem, all) articles that are related to Mesoamerica in some way (and that are identified in any case with WP:MESO banners) has resulted in a number of "false positives". That is to say, there are now quite a few articles tagged with WP:Mexico banners that are only distantly, or not at all, related to Mexico. For example, there are a fair few languages not spoken in Mexico that are now so tagged, articles on sites and historical personages (eg Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil) from points in the Mesoamerican region that are well-outside of any connection with Mexican geography or history, etc.

I would suppose that there ought to be some further round of rationalisation to go through these newly added WP:Mexico banners and double-check that they really apply to the scope of WP:Mexico. Otherwise, the project scope is likely to become unmanageable and diluted. Is anyone planning to do such a clean-up exercise?

Not sure if the tagging efforts have completed yet. If there are still others from the Mesoamerican article set to be processed, perhaps the remaining list could be checked beforehand before processing, just to save double-handling further down the track....?--cjllw ʘ TALK 00:46, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

After a quick look through that list of the remaining cats, most would seem to be apt ones, and so will leave it up to John whether the bot can be reinitiated to complete the job. One that did stand out in a quick scan, as being unlikely, is Category:Venetian language— of the few articles in that one, only Chipilo Venetian dialect would have relevance for Mexico. About the energy reform

Archiving messages and help with town/municipality pages

I am an English teacher in Mexico who is trying to work on pages with my students to better coverage of Mexican geography. I had students choose a town and write about it, but we have run into some problems. One of most confusing being the (lack of) distinction between "town/city" and "municipality" (municipio). There is lack of standardization as to how to name the articles to make the distinction clear.. (see the discussion between User:Aille and myself on my talk page. As these articles are sorely lacking, I would like to make this an ongoing project with my Adv A classes. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, the Municipalities of Querétaro seem to be done well... would like to make the other states just as good.

I would really like to standardize the naming of these articles.

I am having them rewrite these articles a little at a time, with me checking them each step of the way before we do any more damage in Wikipedia! However, I would like to set up the pages so that students know exactly where to put their information when the time comes. So far I have had my students write tables of information and "stubs" and the quality of the writing is MUCHO MEJOR (a lot better!) However, I would like some suggestions, help in how to set up these pages and get students to put in their information so that we have good results... Anyone? Who's active, really?

Im a teacher of advanced English here in Toluca Mexico. I have my students work in varying degrees with Wikipedia (depending on the class). One requirement is to work with other Wikipedians so I was wonder which of all those participants on the main page really do participate. That page hasnt been edited well in so long (Ive seen the same suggestions for participation since last July) that I dont trust that list. Who would be interested in working with us? Hi, I'm active and I edit Mexico related articles, and sometimes add my additions to the WP. I try to work mostly on culture related articles, and some human rights articles, for example Danza de los Viejitos, Albur, Danza de los Voladores de Papantla, Kamel Nacif, Aguas Blancas massacre and some others. Battle Casualties

I want to know about the actual battle casualties of some of the major battles of US-Mexican War 1846-1848. It seems that there are some questions about the casualty numbers in the American sides of the battles. For instance, I have been reading that in the Battle of Contreas the American casualties were 60, but in the recent Wilkapedia section it was 300. Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

FritzBot and ongoing attempt to document Mexican municipalities

There is a lively discussion about the proposal to have a bot create articles for all of the worlds documented towns and villages, see Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/FritzpollBot. There are already a LOT of responses on this page and I have only scanned the various comments. I tend to be in favor. However, this may affect my use of Wikipedia for my English classes as such a bot would create a ton of articles about Mexican towns and villages... whether such have municipal status or not. If such bot does go forward and do this, I would really like to see some kind of consensus about whether to combine town/municipality articles or not. After struggling with the issue and with my students, I really do think that in most cases, especially dealing with central and southern Mexico (which I am more familiar with), combining the two is the most logical choice, as for many, either the town is the only community of any real size (like most cases in Oaxaca) or conversely, the city and the municipality are co-extensive. As for naming convention, naming such combined articles seems to be best done under the town/village's name (most have the same name, at least partially but where the are different, the town name would be more distinctive in most cases... and the bot is going to create a page with the town/village's full name anyway. For towns/municipalities that have the same common name (like Atizapán or Acatlán), disambiguation pages will serve.

Another issue is standardizing infoboxes... I would like to see one for towns with municipal status and towns/villages without such. Ive made a first attempt at such at the Acambay, Mexico State page, though you will have to see it in edit mode to see all the information I think needs to be in there. I have not created one for non-municipal towns/villages but such should include a line stating which municipality it belongs to. As much as I would like my students over the following semesters make a large contribution to documenting all of Mexico's 2500 some-odd municipalities (and then go on to non-municipal towns/villages) I really need a set of examples for them to follow. My experience with the past semester strongly convinced me of the need for this!

As the proposal is looking for feedback from the various Wikiprojects that would be affected, we should know what we are in for.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Regions?

Are there officially-defined, commonly-used (or dare I say) useful regions of Mexico? Above the state level, that is. Category:Mexico geography stubs is somewhat oversized, but it doesn't look like a by-state split would quite work yet, as it'd be rather fine-grained. Going some google-grade research, I've seen north/centre/south split, but also splits by coast, and assorted variants. If you have any thoughts, please comment here. Lost in translation

Tornel is labored with atrocious translation, such as,

Image needs replacement

Hello all...

An image used in the Leonardo Pereznieto article, specifically Image:23apasionado1total.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

At the peer review, someone pointed out that the Battle of the Alamo article does not mention how the battle is now perceived in Mexico. I can read only cursory amounts of Spanish. Would someone be willing to volunteer to search for appropriate books or journal articles (reliable sources only - no websites) that could address this gap in the article. If the volunteer does not want to translate the works, that is fine - I have a few friends who would by able to do this for me. The hardest part for me is finding the articles. Thanks! Help request: 480 Mexico-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Mexico, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Mexico, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Mexico articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

1. Altavista petrogylph complex
2. Huautla, Morelos
3. Las Torres
4. Nuevo Laredo Municipality
5. Nuevo Morelos, Tamaulipas
6. Plaza Sendero
7. Progreso-Nuevo Progreso International Bridge

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 480 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members.

Article on Porfirio Díaz

A new editor, Reillydowd1 (talk · contribs), has added (and removed) a very large amount of content to the article on President Díaz. I'm not terribly knowledgeable about the subject (was taking a look at it during my university class on the History of Mexico), so editors from this Wikiproject ought to have a look at that and see if it's up-to-snuff. Further reorganization of state, city and municipality articles for Mexico

In a nutshell: (1) Rename all Mexican cities and towns to [[Cityname, Statename]]. (2) Rename all Mexican municipalities (similar to US counties) to [[Municipality of Municipalityname, Statename]].

All Mexican states are divided into municipalities, similar to US counties. Usually the city that is the seat of government for that municipality has the same name as the municipality. Also, there appears to have been consensus some time ago to name state articles as [[Statename]], and cities as [[Cityname]], unless there is a conflict in which case it is [[Cityname, Statename]]. There has not been a consensus as to the naming of the municipality articles. So I propose the following:

• States: [[Statename]]
  • Municipalities: [[Municipality of Municipalityname, Statename]] or possibly [[Municipalityname, Statename (municipality)]]
    • Cities, towns etc: [[Cityname, Statename]]

This would accomplish several things. First of all, when creating much-needed templates and lists of cities, capitals municiplities etc, all the redlinks can be created in a uniform fashion, so that when the article gets created, the link is correct. I don't think it's a good idea to leave cities and towns as just [[Cityname]], because there will invariably be many conflicts which can be hard to find as people link to things and it shows up as a blue link, but it's actually the wrong city/town. It may seem now that there aren't many conflicts, but that is because there are thousands of city/town articles to be created. There are also many conflicts that simply haven't been detected. See Metepec and look at what links here, and you'll see that some links are intended for the municipality in the State of Mexico, some for the city in the State of Mexico, some are intended for the municipality or the city in Hidalgo, Mexico.

So what I'm proposing is (1) for all cities and towns in Mexico to be [[Cityname, Statename]], with proper redirects from [[Cityname]] for the most popular cites where possible. The second proposal is for all municipalities to be named [[Municipality of Municipalityname, Statename]] to differentiate from the municipal seat which is almost always named the same. Also, in Spanish they are referred to as Municipio de XXX, so calling them Municipality of XXX in the English Wikipedia makes sense.

For example, in the state of Hidalgo there is a list of municipalities. Mouse over some of the links to see what a mess the naming is. For example there is Acatlán, but that's a municipality in more than one state and there is more than one city with that name as well. My naming scheme above would take care of all of this. If you're afraid the names would be too long, all appropriate redirects can be put into place to redirect from shorter names to the longer ones, if there are no naming conflicts in those individual cases.

Also see the new Hidalgo template for all the municipalities and their seats Template:Hidalgo for another example of the naming mess. Most of the municipalities are named: [[Municipalityname (municipality)]] and the municipal seat either [[Cityname]] or [[Cityname, Statename]] in the case of conflicts.

I am willing to go through all the Hidalgo article and rename pages and create redirects, and can probably start working on other states as well.

Hidalgo is a terrible example to use because neither I or Aille have got around to sorting out ther dabbing for them yet let alone, starting and seperating the municipalities from the seats. The reason why we have done so on many of them is because often the municipality is several thousand square kilometres and eventually there should be enough sufficient information to write articles about both, Spanish wikipedia has illustrated this. However for smaller municipalities, particularly those in the centre and south merged articles would seem more appropriate. By all means join in and help but if you study Template:Chihuahua for example you'll see we know exactly what we are doing and will get around to fixing all of Mexico given time. Already Aille has done a lot of work fixing double links and dab sorting with a consistent naming, I doubt we will want to change the naming convention at this date. However I have no objections if you want to change the naming convention yourself as long as you make it ALL consistent and it doesn't require any further unnecessary work for myself. But please note Mexico is not the United States and few other countries on wikipedia follow the naming convention where every towns MUST have the state after its name. If there are no other towns with the same name it seems pointless redirecting to ..., state just so it is like America. Also when people are searching for the municipality or town it is highly likely the will type in the actual name first rather than typing Municipality of... However if you were to sort out the redirects and fix the links in all of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mexico/State templates I won't stop you. I'd like to hear what Aille thinks first though. Thankyou. I too thought that municipalities run similar to the way US counties but got an education when I used municipality pages as a project for my students in Toluca. It may be feasible or desirable to separate town and municipality pages for the northern states where many municipalies are very large social entities, even if politically the government of the municipality and the seat are one and the same. This is the main difference with counties. The county government is NOT the goverment of the city where the county government is located. Politically, a municipality (at least in Mexico) is simply an extension of the town. When another settlement in the municipality becomes large enough, it splits off to form a new municipality as no two towns in the same municipal area can be equal. I believe this just happened with Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca State. Even with articles about the "cabeceras" (seats) in the north where the territory that that the town has contol over is so vast, some mention should be made about the municipality on the town page and then link to a municipality page if there is enough info to warrant a second page. However, in cases where the city and municipality are co-extensive (such as Ciudad López Mateos) or where the town is the only real entity with the rest of the municipality being a collection of haciendas or groups of homes at intersections like many in Oaxaca, it just doesnt make sense to separate them. Besides that, many English speakers will find the major town name on a map but not the municipality. So the municipality should be treated as secondary. Ive worked extensively with the municipality articles associated with the State of Mexico (see Municipalities of Mexico State) and this works pretty well. I have run into some naming problems tho. Generally, I have chosen to name the town/municipality page after the legal name of the town. I did this primarily to avoid duplications of names, esp. of common names (there are two town/municipalities commonly called Atizapan and Atenco in Mexico State) and I figure the city name is what would appear on maps. However, this is not perfect either. I had a really tough time doing this with Ciudad Lopez Mateos because NO ONE in Mexico State or Mexico City knows this city in this way... it is always called by its municipal name Atizapan de Zaragoza (to distinguish it from (Santa Cruz) Atizapan. Of course, a redirect helps with those searching with this page. One last thing... Oaxaca state would prove VERY problematic with the separation of town and municipality. There are 571 municipalities there (just about every dip in the mountain range counts as a municipality) and even with combining them, finding enough info for more then a stub with one or more lines is almost impossible... not to mention the fact that you will wind up with two articles with essentially the same information. Lastly, the Enciclopedia de Municipios de Mexico (available online), from which we are likely to get most information, combines town and municipality information without clearly marking what is what, as they consider the entities igual. I understand the need for a standard naming practice and we clearly need one, but simply spliting town and muncipality into two separate pages isn´t going to work.Thelmadatter (talk) 17:15, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Both of you raise good points. I see various issues here:

Municipalities aren't always important enough to separate from the main city (the municipal seat), but considering all of Mexico, the municipalities that shouldn't have an article are in the minority. So I think we should work on the assumtion that there will (eventually) be an article for each municipality. Municipalities that would never be more than a stub should redirect to the municipal seat city article.

I would still like to see a convention for naming Mexican municipality and city articles. I realize it doesn't have to follow the convention to name US cites and counties in a certain manner, but I think it would be worthwhile to establish and follow a convention for Mexican cities and municipalities. For example, looking at Template:Chihuahua, (good job on filling out all the articles by the way), I really note the lack of standardization:

Some of the municipalities have a trailing (municipality), but in the case of Juárez, it needs a more specific suffix. Other municipalities are Name, State, which I find inconsistent.

This is why I would be inclined to go with:

If there is no article or any other meanings for "Aldama" for example, then add a redirect to either the municipality or the seat, whichever is more important. If a given municipality doesn't warrant it's own article, then let it be a redirect to the municipal seat.

For important Mexican cities, we would need to make sure there were redirects in place, or allow a few exceptions. I think allowing a few exceptions is fine for important cities to satisfy WP:PRIMARYTOPIC.

This is not an attempt to make Mexican settlement names follow the conventions for US settlement names. The reason for establishing a convention with bring order to the caos. It will also help immensely when creating templates or articles because it will allow linking directly to the correct article without having to guess at the name.

I would be willing to undertake the enormous task of renaming articles and creating redirects for all of Mexico, with the exception of cities such as Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, or Mexico City, which should stay where they are.

What do you think? Count Blofeld has stated that he wouldn't oppose the change. I would like User:Aille's opinion too, before starting such a large project. Thelmadatter seems to agree that there are naming problems.

I'm ready to get started, but I want to make sure this is the right thing to do before starting.

Hi, everyone. Basically, what Blofeld said. And what Thelmadatter said with respect to co-extensive municipalities. I think, with the exception of tiny fragmented cases (Oax) and totally urbanized munis (edomex), the long term aim should be cover both the seat and the muni. As for the naming scheme, I prefer "Juarez (municipality)" -- and "Juarez municipality of Chihuahua" when dabbing is necessary -- because (1) it's easier to link to (automatic filling in after the pipe) and (2) "Municipality of " isn't really part of the official name in the way that "County" is in, eg, "Dade County". The inconsistencies in the Chih. template are largely because it was the 1st (or 2nd?) that Blofeld got round to doing, and we hadn't really ironed out the wrinkles. "Allende, Chihuahua" in particular probably deserves getting moved to a "(municipality)" form, if only because I suspect most people talking about Allende, Chihuahua, mean the city.¹ After all, we're all much more aware of cities than we are of munis. "City, State", as a rule for Mexican cities has ben proposed before, and rejected, although I'm not sure it's not a bad idea in and of itself. (see the archives of the city naming conventions page). Don't know, maybe this time we could make it stick, particularly with the volume of articles recently created (and the consequent need for dabbing). I would suggest that for exceptions we allow only one (ie, Mexico City), otherwise it'll be an endless fight on where to draw the line. Hermosillo? Pachuca? Zihuatanejo? How would we go about proposing and getting a consensus on a City, State naming convention for Mexican cities? I think for munis we shouldn't start changing things just now, since trying to add "municipality" to the name of each and every one would make the name longer and I'm not even 100% convinced my idea of "Municipaly of Name, State" is the best idea. I'm not sure about the official names of municipalities, but they are usually referred to as "Municipio de ___", especially when the name is the same as the seat of the muni. I would love for us to make a proposal of some sort for both cities and municipalities to establish a convention that we can run with.  LinguistAtLarge  15:53, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure how you'd go about proposing that. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements) is the obvious place, but take a look at the "Mexico" section on Archive 18, which is when it was last proposed. It didn't fare too well, particularly in light of the ongoing campaign those who appose the "comma convention" for the USA. And it does violate the standard naming practice. If you want to push your point, though, why not spend a little time creating the Actopans, the Acatláns and the Metepecs (etc, etc, etc)? One of the more compelling arguments last time was on the need for pre-disambiguation, and articles like those only serve as evidence. If half the towns in Category:Hidalgo have the state as part of the name for disambiguation purposes, then it's easier to argue that they should all be named like that. Peer Review Mexico City Cathedral and History of Mexico City

Ive put in two peer review requests so far with Mexico City Cathedral and History of Mexico City. Im sure both still need some good copyediting work still. Someone already rated the cathedral article as a B but Id like to get it to Good or Featured status. One problem I know it has is with the names of saints and religious/architectural terminology. I did the best I could given that Im a native English speaker and I was using mostly Spanish language sources. I left a number of saints' names in Spanish as I didnt know their equivalent in English. As for the History of Mexico City article, please look at it as well for content. Its a bit long but I dont know if it too long. 1985 Mexico City earthquake

I had this article peer reviewed and I got to admit, Im a bit confused. I know Im bad at editing my own stuff, esp. after putting a lot of hours into it... kinda get attached to my baby there! ha ha ha Id like more feedback on the article tho. I dont understand what problem the reviewer had with the sentence with "but" and even more curious is that he says I used a peacock term in the first sentence (I assume he's referring to the word "devastating" but then tells me that my initial paragraph has to get the reader's attention. I cant think of another way of describing this quake that relates its significance. oh .. one other thing. Another critique was that I used a bit of jargon without explaining what it means. I assume that has to do with the part about describing its geological aspects. I thought about describing terms like "subduction" but then thought that it would be distracting and that a link to the relavant article would be sufficient. Peacock language is promotes or tries to give importance to something without giving real information. What the reviewer is most likely referring to is for example:

The 1985 Mexico City earthquake was one of the most devastating earthquakes in the history of the Americas.

To avoid peacock words, try rewriting it like this:

The 1985 Mexico City earthquake was a large earthquake that killed approximately XX people and caused an estimated XXX pesos of damage, including damage to irreplaceable historic structures, in Mexico City.

The difference is you give facts and you allow the reader to make their own judgement as to the importance of the article's subject, in this case the reader gets to decide for herself whether or not this was the most devastating earthquakes in the Americas or not.  LinguistAtLarge  18:39, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Municipalities of Mexico - Naming - Abc Municipality

Sweden, Denmark, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro use the form "Abc Municipality" ( compare Category_talk:Municipalities_by_country#Naming ). This scheme is in harmony with "Abc Province", "Abc District", "Abc Region", "Abc Department" used for other geographical entities. Maybe Mexican municipio articles could join the scheme. Currently only ca. 20 countries have municipality articles clearly labeled in the title as such. It's all very fresh and I think maybe a good moment to agree on common naming scheme, so that later change-work is minimized. LocodeMaster (talk) 14:03, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I am interested in rwwriting the Charro article, and would like it to be renamed Mexican Charro. I think it would remove some of the extraneous material and there coould be a dismambiguation page made for "Charro" to list the other uses and link to them where indicated. Nao de China

Looking for an article about the Nao de China, as galleons to the Philippines from Acapulco were named in Mexico (Nueva Espana) and all Spanish speaking countries, I found "galleon to the Philippines", and I edited the page. I added that the name of these vessels as called in Mexico and Spanish speaking countries was Nao de China. I did it twice. I was threatened and told that I was vandalizing the page. That I had no idea what I was talking about. I am a Mexican historian working at the Colegio de Mexico doing a fellowship at Columbia University. The English page describing the Nao de China is wrong, and whoever thinks he/she owns it needs to know that the name was Nao de China. Valle de Chalco Solidaridad

I'm concerned about the redirect from Valle de Chalco Solidaridad to Xico. I lived in Valle de Chalco for approximately five years, and absolutely NO ONE refers to it as Xico. In fact, if you say you live in Xico, and unless you make it very clear that you live in the part of Valle de Chalco that is known as Xico, most Mexicans will assume you live in the town of Xico in the state of Veracruz. If you refer to the list of municipalities on the website of the Mexican Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografica http://mapserver.inegi.org.mx/mgn2k/?s=geo&c=1223 you will, indeed, see Valle de Chalco listed as the municipality and Xico listed as the municipal seat. We don't have the exact equivalent of municipality and municipal seat, at least not in the U.S. But the closest concept would probably be something like the relationship of township to town. You will also note, in Spanish Wikipedia, that Valle de Chalco Solidaridad has its own article, with no redirect to Xico. I believe this redirect should be removed. By the way, once this error is corrected, I can add a little more information about Valle de Chalco, e.g. how and when it was split off from the municipality of Chalco. P.S. Just restored an article that I deleted (as it was created by a known vandal), but I have been informed that the person does exist. I have restored it, and marked it as unreferenced. The article was prodded in the past as a hoax. The current article may well be a hoax, but according to the Adolfo Ruiz Cortines article there was a person of that name who was a Governor of the state of Veracruz. He has an article on the Spanish language Wikipedia at es:Jorge Cerdán Lara. Can members of this project bash the article into shape please? Mjroots (talk) 14:25, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Not a member of this project, but I stubbed the article with my best attempt at translating from the article on Spanish Wikipedia (learned from 4 years of high school Spanish + having a Mexican mother-in-law). Melquisedet Angulo Córdova?

Hey all. My name's Hunter. I don't normally edit articles that fall under WikiProject Mexico, but I had been considering writing an article about Melquisedet Angulo Córdova. He is the Navy ensign who was killed during the raid that killed drug lord Marcos Arturo Beltrán-Leyva. From what I've read, Córdova was hailed as a hero and buried at a big funeral, and then a few hours later, gunmen broke into his family's house and killed his mother and three other relatives. (See [4], here and here, among many other news articles). I had been considering making a page about Córdova, which I figured could entail what happened to his family too. But then I also figured it could be challenged as per WP:ONEEVENT and other notability-related guidelines. I figured you guys are the experts, so what do you think? Does it warrant its own article? Nuevo Scandinavia

I saw there is an article on a supposed Mexican town with name Nueva Escandinavia. It is supposed to be home town of a Mexican "Mennonite" rocker, Martin Thulin. However, being born into a Mennonite community, I have no knowledge of such a places, as well as the Scandinavian Mennonite community is not known to anybody. Old fort in Ortiz, Sonora. I have not been able to find information on that location. Ortiz is in the Guaymas area, and the Guaymas history refers to a fort build in late 1700s with four towers, which not longer exists. There are inconsistency in the article Fernando Castro Pacheco: In the ref:“...color e imagen de Yucata̱n, 1.th ed. (Mérida, Yucatán, México...” 1th is not the truth. It may be 1st or it may be 4th, 5th ... It is possible that the number is wrong, or the “th” is wrong. I do not know what of that is wrong or true. English translation of “Secretaría”

The translation of Secretaría, the term denoting Mexican government departments (ministries), as Secretariat seems to me to be an unfortunate false friend.

It does not automatically follow that a ministry headed by a “Secretary” should be referred to as a “Secretariat” in English. In fact, I can’t think of a single example in English that would justify this translation. Other “secretariats” (such as the United Nations Secretariat, Commonwealth Secretariat) are not comparable, as they are single bodies performing an essentially expanded secretarial role for a large organization, rather then functioning as government departments on an equal footing with other such departments.

In contrast, both the United States and the United Kingdom, whose Cabinet-level ministers are designated “Secretary” (or “Secretary of State”), have “Departments”. Thus, the United States Secretary of State is the head of the US Department of State and the British Secretary of State for Work and Pensions is the head of the Department for Work and Pensions.

In this context, would it not be more correct, therefore, to translate the term “Secretaría” as Department? Hence:

Secretaría de Gobernación = Department of Governance

Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores = Department of Foreign Affairs

Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público = Department of Finance and Public Credit

And so on… each headed by a “Secretary of …”

Saltillo Affair

The geography in the article is all messed up. It mentions that the Portuguese team wanted to train real close Mexico City so they picked the nearby city of Saltillo which isn't nearby at all. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

We need to get the word out as to what makes for a "United" States. Not much has changed. Theodore Roosevelt under stood and cast a mold for a great nation. We need to pass the word to current leaders and citizens.

Republic of Yucatán needs an expert, or at least someone who knows Mexican history

This article, Republic of Yucatán, came up in the recent Guild of Copyeditors elimination drive as in need of "repair." Ater several hours working on it, I've done what I can to make it English, but it really needs additional help. I cannot clear up a lot of the issues it has with history, politics, and geography, and some parts of it are unintelligible to me. They appear to have been cut and pasted from the President Fox webpage into a translator, and then cut and pasted into Wikipedia. Spanish pronunciation

Lots of articles on Mexico include a "Spanish" pronunciation. As far as I have ever seen, this is always a Castilian or Castilian-style pronunciation, and not the way anyone I know in D.F. or NL or Ags or Gro or Qro or Q. Roo pronounces it.
Why is that?

Santa María la Redonda

Hello! I've read the article about Santa María la Redonda and I think it has a few mistakes, because it mixes two different topics: Santa María la Redonda, which is an old temple and by extension an area of Colonia Guerrero, and Santa María la Ribera, which is a very different neighborhood with a history of its own. Both places are west from the Centro Histórico of Mexico City, but thats all they share. Practicing your internal monologue?? :-) No, they are not the same thing. Colonia Cuauhtemoc is a colonia in a larger borough of the same name...at least thats how it is presented in the articles. In general, its my experience that in Mexico many nahuatl (or zapotec) names that have a historic tie to the area, often get re-used extensively within the same geographic area. This can be rather confusing sometimes as street and highway signage (which is often lacking in the first place) doesn't always specify *which* entity is which. For instance near Oaxaca City there are at least six different entities called "Etla" in a 20 mile radius of each other. Some have specific names "Villa de Etla" or "San Agustín Etla" while others are "Colonia Etla" or just plain "Etla". However, all of them are casually referred to as "Etla" and to make matters worse, road signs often just say "Etla". My favorite sign is on the road to DF, where it has three "Etlas" listed with arrows pointing three different ways..hahaha.. Anyhow, maybe Themadatter can add a bit to the Cuauhtemoc pregunta, as I believe she is more familiar with "El D.F." than I am.. -- nsaum75 ^{!Dígame¡‎} 10:58, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Tamaulipas prison system

The Tamaulipas prison system has been in the news lately for the number of prison breaks
