Алшар is Allchar or Alshar

I wanted to create an article about the Алшар mine and I now have no clue which of the two transcriprtions is the right one, Allchar or Alshar. Both are found in literature. Thanks for the help.--Stone (talk) 19:49, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Going by the transliteration system preferred by the Macedonian Academy, I think it would be Alšar. --Local hero talk 19:56, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, English speakers are not into diacritics. Best would be Alshar, but having in mind the opinion around here, it'd have to be something unreadable for most native English speakers (or at least those that are unfamiliar with diacritics, which is the vast majority). --Laveol T 11:46, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
It should be Alšar. I don't think that this is unreadable about the English speaking readers, because the articles on English Wikipedia are named with their original name in latin alphabet. In Macedonian latin alphabet exists letter š (form the cyrillic ш), as in the other latin alphabets exist letters like ş, or ð, and thereby articles on English Wikipedia named with this letters in the titles. If you assume good faith to alleviate it for the English speaking readers, propose renaming of all articles with non-English letters in the titles. --Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 13:08, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
The problem here is that pushing from users using diacritics has led to the encyclopaedia going backwards from its initial goals. It should be readable to English speakers not native speakers of the language of the specific place. That's what Wikipedia:Naming still states. It's the English-language Wikipedia, but tons of people tend to forget that. The only ones interested in those articles sadly are the very ones who push the diacritics. I've talked to English and Americans and they say they don't know what these letters mean, neither do they know how to read them. So, basically the encyclopaedia as it is, is not as hospitable to English speakers as it could've been.--Laveol T 13:49, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
Maybe if we ask for changes together, it'll be changed. You have my support in it. But, recently I've found that to all articles with non-sens letters for English speaking readers redirect articles with letters in English alphabet (i.e. Timisoara redirects to Timişoara). With this, it seems there is no problem for English speaking readers, not just to find, but to learn some more with these letters. The appropriate title is Alšar. English-speakers don't know what 'š' means but it's not a big problem. We could add the IPA transcritption or write "also spelt Alshar" in the intro. --Local hero talk 18:52, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
The naming convention for the articles is the way that the name used in English books and journals should be used. For this Allchar or Alshar we have already transcription in the literature and this one should be used. Sorry for the real transcription. I only wanted to ask if one of the two is the right one, I did not ask for a third one which is unknown in the literature. But with the introduction of ne forms into the english language we also have to change vienna and nuremberg.--Stone (talk) 19:45, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Please take a look at the edit request on Republic of Macedonia. The edit request has been up for more than a week, and not responded to at all. I often try to help resolve these edit requests, but am hesitant to do so on a topic I have no knowledge about that is so contentious that it's under discretionary sanctions. Татковина

I would like to have the words for the folk song Татковина in Cyrillic. I have a rather bad transcription and was not able to find the original on the internet. The below is the fruit of my amateurish effort of reinterpreting the transcription. Can someone please correct it, or at least correct some of the gravest spelling errors? I'm pretty sure I must have missed some ш, ч, љ, њ, ж, џ, ѕ, з, ќ or ѓ, because the transcription did not distinguish them.

Oh, and I could also need a little help with the pronunciation. I had thought Macedonian Cyrillic was phonetically very accurate, but I'm wondering why it spells "мое", rather than "моје". Is this really pronounced without a "ј"? Or is it a convention to leave out "ј" before "е"? If so, how would the unpalatized /e/ be pronounced? (Similarly, I'm wondering why it is "пролета", and not "прољета".) — Sebastian 18:31, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

True History

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, was until the dissolvation part of Yugoslavia. The term FYROM is internationally acknowledged by the European Union and the United Nations. The name Macedonia derives from the Greek name Μακεδονία which was the kingdom of Alexander the Great situated in northen Greece and its area covered regions that expand from Pella (Πέλλα) birthplace of Alexander to the southern regions of today's Blugaria and FYROM. The empire built by Alexander expanded in the later years until today's Afganistan, Pakistan and the final place Alexander and his army reached was India. The later occupiers of the area in the northen part of the Empire in the regions of FYROM and Bulgaria are slavic, they do not have anything in common with Alexander the Great, who was Greek and proof of this fact is the letter that he wrote to the Athenians and was placed on the Parthenon and stated "all the Greeks except the Spartians" "Όλοι οι Έλληνες πλην των Λακεδαιμωνίων". The current citizens of FYROM are in their majority slavs and there is a big Albanian minority. The oficcial alphabet of the country is the cyrilic, which was also created by two Greek monks Cyrilus and Methodios during the Byzantine times for the Slavic populations that at the time occupied, also, a big part of today's Greece.The aplhabet shares many similarities to the Greek one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.6.227.44 (talk) 10:01, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Republic of Macedonia History and Facts

there is no such a state as Republic of macedonia. FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is the accepted form as it was born by Tito for internal puproses. By accepting the existence of a republic of macedonia it will creat sequence of territorial problems as the Majority of Macedonia is in Greece. It is definete that in the future the so called macedonians will look after Macedonia in Greece. We all know what Macedonia was as Sparta Athens Theves Argos Mycenae Troy etc. All were ancient city states with large territorial influences. Al Macedonia names have a meaning translated in Greek such Alexander (Alex=keep away-protect+Andro=men) we still find the words in currently used greek words such as αλεξικεραυνο (keeping away the thunders) and αλεξισφαιρο (Bullet safe vests)...The name of his horse Voukefalas meaning Head of cow and Hiss father was Philipp (Friend of horses) and his mother Olympia etc etc. Anyway besides that their culture and language is Slavic regardless their effor to Macedonize their language. It is hestorically also accepted worldwide that all the legacy left behind by Alexander the Great (who spoke Greek and his teacher was Aristoteles) is known as the Hellenistic period. Anyway, I do not have anything against the people of FYROM but they must know they are grown on lies and they should adopt name according to their history. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

– Country's official name has changed as a result of the Prespa agreement. In January 2019, the former Republic of Macedonia changed its name to Republic of North Macedonia after an agreement with Greece which ended the long pending naming dispute. The corresponding page has already changed, but there are many references to the Republic of Macedonia left on other pages. Those should change to Republic of North Macedonia. Explanation

A few IPs (I guess the same person) tried to add some further explanation on the topic of this Wikiproject. @Future Perfect at Sunrise:, @Local hero: and I reverted them. However, after a discussion with @Peacemaker67:, I started to wonder if further explanation on the topic is needed. For instance, would WikiProject North Macedonia is a WikiProject whose aim is to increase the quality of articles related to North Macedonia and Macedonians. It is not focussed on articles relating to Ancient Macedonia or Greek Macedonia, which are covered by WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome and WikiProject Greece respectively be better than the current description of the topic? Well, since it's now called "WikiProject North Macedonia", it should be pretty evident that it deals with North Macedonia, shouldn't it? And of course, WikiProject members are quite free to deal with whatever they wish, so if members of this project started a quality drive on articles related to ancient topics or related to the ethnic Macedonian diaspora history in Greece, what would stop them? But that's all moot, since the "project" is moribund anyway. Like so many other so-called WikiProjects, it's been doing essentially nothing at all for a decade. Fut.Perf. ☼ 11:19, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
Quite. As a non-project member but with a long-term interest in Balkans articles, I've just been bold and added this based on discussion with Ktrimi991. I'm completely relaxed about being reverted if this is considered overkill by project members. I have checked ARBMAC and I don't think it contravenes the ruling, as all it does is direct people to the right places if they are here by mistake, in the same way a hatnote does. The issue is that the word "Macedonian" has several meanings. It is related to the name of this Wikiproject that is "North Macedonia" just like it is related to "Ancient Macedonia" and "Greek Macedonia". Like Peacemaker67, I am not against reverting to the previous version if the consensus of the project members demands that. But there was no such ambiguity in the description as stated. There is nothing confusing or ambiguous about "articles related to North Macedonia and Macedonians". We don't normally define the scope of WikiProjects in terms of what they are not, so why would we do that here? You do not see any ambiguity, and I too do not see (hence I reverted one of the IPs yesterday). But others might see (similarily with the IPs) as the long history of the discussions on the Macedonia topic has shown in almost two decades of Wikipedia. After a discussion on Peacemaker67's talk page, he and I concluded that a proposal here aimed at avoiding further disagreements between editors would bring no harm. First women MP(s) in North Macedonia

Hello. I'm compiling a list of the first women MPs in each country, but have been unable to find the answer for North Macedonia. I'm guessing they would have been elected in the 1945 Yugoslavian parliamentary election or possibly one of the early elections to the legislature of SR Macedonia. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Balkan Latinity WikiProject

Hello, I've been thinking for a while of an idea for a new and certainly needed WikiProject. The Aromanians/Vlachs, Megleno-Romanians/Meglenites and Istro-Romanians/Ćiribirci are poorly known peoples in the Balkans, the only ones that are Romance-speaking apart of the Romanians. Tagging pages related to these with WikiProject templates can turn problematic, see this talk page for example [1], saturated with 7 different templates. I was thus thinking that giving them their own WikiProject could increase organization on Wikipedia about info on these peoples and increase their representation in the project, perhaps even attracting members of these groups into working at Wikipedia. The project could be split into three task forces for each of the three.

If you're interested, please ping me here or message me on my talk page. Expressing your interest in the existence of such a project is enough, you will not be compromised or pressured into working in a topic area you might lose interest to soon. Help on Eastern European languages

Hello!

Our of boredom, I am trying to identify the languages of inscriptions on a fountain located in central Budapest. I could easily identify some languages such as Hebrew, Armenian, Russian, English, French, Spanish etc. but I have trouble with some, mostly Slavic, languages which I do not speak myself. I guess that they must include Czech (or Slovak), Slovene, Croatian/Serbian/Bosniak, Macedonian, Bulgarian and/or maybe others.

Translations of 'The place is ours':

  • Trg je naš / Площадьт е наш (pretty sure that's Bulgarian) / Naš trg / Nas trg / [unreadable] naše je námestie

Translations of 'Non potable water':

  • Водата не е за пиене / Voda ni pitna / Непитна вода / Nepitná voda / Nepitka voda / Voda nije za piće

Translations of 'Open lawn':

  • Ходенето по тревата е разрешено / Dozvoljeno je gaziti (ǧaziti?) po travi / Dozvoljeno gaženje trave

I also do not manage to identify the language in 3 other inscriptions for which glossaries easily available online did not help. Could it be Romani?

  • Náj lasó ráji / Ámáro szi o placo / Pécsár saj ustarén

Is anyone here able to tell which is which? Note that many inscriptions (such as in French and Greek) have spelling mistakes and inconsistent respect of diacritics.

Hi zzuuzz. My involvement has only (knowingly) been trivial reverts of obvious vandalism. I'm aware there's a de jure definition of nationality in the Prespa agreement, but there might also be a differing de facto usage per WP:COMMONNAME or similar.
I don't have the required expertise to contribute to a discussion on how to describe nationals of North Macedonia in articles, but I'm happy to continue keeping one eye on the Osmani article for vandalism when semi-protection expires, according to whatever consensus is reached. Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
