WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Drone and aerial footage[edit]

Would this be the most appropriate project to take on the task of finding or promoting the creation of drone and aerial footage? Drones are becoming more and more popular. Even though some people find them nuisances, if drone enthusiasts are going to fly crafts for the purpose of taking aerial photographs and videos, we might as well encourage them to upload to Wikipedia/Commons. Yes? No? Thoughts? ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:04, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

@Another Believer: Hi. What does drone footage, or any other particular kind of camera mount, specifically have to do with Wikipedia, and why does it require highlighting or promotion? — Smuckola(talk) 15:09, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
For the same reasons we upload images and videos taken by standard cameras. If I had a drone with photography/video capabilities, I would be inclined to take aerial footage of buildings, parks, geographic features, bridges, architecture, events, etc., just like I do with a regular camera. But drones provide a unique perspective. These images/videos be educational, and some may even be more intriguing or powerful than those taken from a common ground-level view. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:22, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
I do most my Wikiphotography from a bicycle. It's a splendid way to combine three hobbies to the advantage of each. Sometimes aerial photographs are more useful than mine, and sometimes less. I don't see a reason for geographical or other topical Wikiprojects to encourage any one method or platform over others. All are good, when they help people understand without making a nuisance. 7 hours of video available on Wikimedia Commons from UNESCO[edit]

Dear all

I'm happy to say that I have just uploaded over 7 hours (426 minutes) of video from a UNESCO DVD set ICT4ID to Commons here. Additonally we have made available 26 videos of news footage available here. The files uploaded in webm format in sections ranging from 10 minutes to 1 hour, I can see lots of small clips that could be made from the videos.

When reusing the content please could you use the following as the source, this will keep the files categorised allowing us to track of reuse of the contact (it adds the file to a category) and the end user will be able to see where the file came from.

{{UNESCO archive |http://unesdoc.unesco.org/Ulis/cgi-bin/ulis.pl?catno=211317&set=53E13F6B_0_1&gp=&lin=1&ll=f | type=video}}

Below is a small selection, please let me know if you have any questions or I can help in any way,

Many thanks

What do you need from the video player ?[edit]

I'm currently working on replacing our current video player (by Kaltura inc and known as mwEmbed) in favor of a more modern, better maintained and more popular one (by Brightcove, Inc, known as Video.js). There is a demo available (slowness is due to tools lab not being too suitable for these kinds of demos). Many features are still missing, that will require writing plugins, custom configuration etc, but most of that is on my radar. I have some general questions around people's needs for a player however, that are more difficult to answer:

  1. How do you envision playback of the the smaller thumbnail inclusions into articles ?
  2. How do you envision playback on the Category page ?
  3. How do you envision playback of sound badges ?
  4. How do you envision playback of pronunciations ?

Descriptions are nice, and even better would be if you have links of good examples in other websites, for these interactions, which are actually rather uncommon for players. Additionally:

  1. Is there a desire for playlists ?
  2. Is there a desire for "Related" clips ?

Logos in donated videos[edit]

I am requesting comments on the issue of non-free logos used for giving credit in freely-licensed videos. Thoughts from others on this issue are requested at
