Freelance writers

I'm doing a book article on a Rachel Simon memoir at Draft:Riding the Bus with My Sister (book). This comes up often, at least in my experience, does anyone else discount reviews by freelance writers in newspapers? Or are they OK to establish notability / to be used in "review" sections of articles? Is there any guidance on this? Thanks. 781h (talk) 01:07, 29 August 2026 (UTC)

If it's published in a major newspaper I'd treat it as reliable. And a byline adds extra credibility, IMO. (Free community papers might be more questionable.) pburka (talk) 02:23, 29 August 2026 (UTC)

Question about Wiki Page

Hi everyone I'm a writer with short stories in some pretty good lit mags - Saturday Evening Post, Kenyon Review, etc. And I have a short story collection coming out through Cornerstone Press in Sept. 2027. I also run a writers retreat and workshop space in Harpers Ferry, WV. Wikipages are (of course) amazing and, if I understand it correctly, I cannot generate a page about myself. Does anyone have recommendations on how to get one going? Thank you so much for any insights/suggestions you're willing to share! Eligibility for a Wikipedia page is determined by a Wikipedia policy called "notability". For writers, the notability criteria are spelled out at WP:NAUTHOR. For the most part, biographies of authors on Wikipedia meet one of two inclusion reasons: at least two of the author's works have each been reviewed in multiple independent reliable sources, or multiple profiles of the author have been published in independent reliable sources (biographical blurbs from publishers or events are not independent). Alternative paths to notability include major literary awards (e.g. Booker or Governor General Prize, not local prizes). pburka (talk) 20:04, 8 September 2026 (UTC)

Hi there Ellen, thanks for your question. Pburka has already given good advice about notability requirements; it's probably a bit too early in your career for you to meet those requirements. Twins (Dermansky novel)

Could someone from this WikiProject take a look at Twins (Dermansky novel)? The article seems to have been as is since it was created, and there's nothing to indicate (at least nothing I could find) that it meets WP:NBOOK. However, it might just be OK to redirect to Marcy Dermansky as an alternative to deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:09, 23 September 2026 (UTC)

I wouldn’t mind a redirect to the author on WP:PAGEDECIDE grounds, but I do think the book passes NBOOK with a starred Kirkus review, a short NYT review, and a Publishers Weekly review. ~ le 🌸 valyn (talk) 22:28, 23 September 2026 (UTC)

The article itself definitely didn't make a good case for the book's notability, so it was a fair suggestion! Normally I'd actually still consider a merge, given how little info is there, but in this case I think I am going to add a synopsis now that I've read some sources... As for the image, the fair use rationale looks good to me; I believe using low-resolution book cover images for identification purposes is a well-established case. The non-free file was tagged for review by a bot because it lack the non-free use rationale required per WP:NFCC#10c. That was subsequently addressed by the same bot, and things are now OK; a redirecting/merging of the article (if that's what ends up being done) will, however, change the justification for the file's non-free use, and it will need to be reassessed per WP:NFC#cite_note-3. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:31, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
