William S. Lerner is an American inventor, businessman, and philanthropist. He holds 14 patents in the consumer sector which vary from fiber optics to strollers, and has pioneered significant safety contributions to burn-prevention technology. He is an officially registered, U.S. expert for five hydrogen technologies, and a U.S. delegate, voting member for six Technical Advisory Groups with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME),[6][7] and a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)[8][9] [10] [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]

Early life[edit]

Lerner was raised in the suburbs of New York City and began inventing as a young child. His first designs included a dome umbrella (which was later manufactured), and a wiperless windshield that would use high-speed fans to blow rain off the glass.[30]

Lerner’s family owned hotels, real estate, and an oil/coal distribution company dating back to 1934. At one point his family was the largest privately held coal wholesaler and retailer in New York State, serving all of New York City, its outer boroughs, schools and municipal buildings with oil and coal.[31]

Lerner is a luxury watch enthusiast, regularly contributing to horological publications.[32]

Inventions[edit]

As an inventor, Lerner is best known for his Excessive Temperature Warning Device patent. After seeing the trauma that children can suffer from gas fireplace burns,[33] he created an alert system designed to flash when the fireplace glass is at a hazardous temperature. He continues to work with various manufacturers to realize his goal of reducing or eliminating pediatric burns due to gas fireplaces.[34][35][36][37][38][39][40]

He patented and commercialized (sold to a manufacturer) the “Automatically Rocking Stroller.”[41]

Automotive[edit]

• Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Technical Standards Task Force: Identifying Disabled User Issues for Automated Driving System-Dedicated Vehicles (ADS-DVs)[55]
Task force is developing recommendations on user-specific issues to this non-driver population of ADS-DVs and their occupants. ADS-DVs have no longitudinal/lateral controls, and will allow automotive travel to those with physical, visual, and/or cognitive impairments who are otherwise unable to obtain a driver’s license.[56]

• SAE Fuel Cell Interface Task Force[57]
The Fuel Cell Standards Committee establishes standards for vehicle fuel cell systems and their interfaces with the vehicle. Standards will cover the safety aspects of fuel cell systems in the vehicle, test procedures to establish the performance of the system/components, and interface requirements.

SPIE[edit]

Through the International Society for Optics and Photonics(SPIE), Lerner is a globally published, peer-reviewed author for advances in light guide technologies, displays, fiber optics and sensors.[58]

Philanthropy[edit]

He also supports over 20 charities, ranging from The Promise Project to The Children’s Tumor Foundation. Lerner has visited the Cabrini Ministries mission in Swaziland. After spending 10 days helping care for children and orphans stricken with HIV, AIDS, and TB, a commitment to serving the needs of children became part of his life.[59]
