"Yes, And?" (stylized as all lowercase) is a song by American singer Ariana Grande, released on January 12, 2024, through Republic Records, as the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album.

Background and promotion

After the release of her sixth studio album, Positions (2020), Grande began focusing on managing her cosmetics brand, R.E.M. Beauty, and was cast as Glinda in the film adaptations of the Broadway musical Wicked.[1] She also served as a coach on the 21st season of The Voice during late 2021.[2] In a question-and-answer segment of a R.E.M. Beauty YouTube video, published in May 2022, she revealed that she would not be recording another album until she is done filming the Wicked films (2024–2025).[3]

Grande teased the release of her seventh album in an October 2023 photo dump on her Instagram, jokingly saying the album title was Goat Mother. Also included in the photo dump were pictures of Swedish producer and longtime collaborator Max Martin.[4][5] On December 7 and December 17, 2023, she shared several pictures and clips of herself and members of her team working in recording studios and editing audio files.[6] Grande confirmed a 2024 album release via her social media on December 27.[7]

On January 4, 2024, Grande went in public wearing a custom sweatshirt that read "yes, and?" to tease the lead single's title, which she had previously done for her Sweetener lead single "No Tears Left to Cry" (2018).[8][9] The phrase was confirmed to be the name of the lead single when Grande officially announced the song via her social media.[10] Jem Aswad of Variety commented that "Yes, And?" was a successor to "Thank U, Next", the title of her fifth studio album (2019) and its lead single (2018).[11]

"Yes, And?" is Grande's first solo musical output since Positions.[10] Its pre-save and pre-order links for streaming services and its CD single were first shared via the Sweetener Instagram page.[12] The artwork was partially revealed in December 2023 with a defocused close-up shot of Grande's red lips via R.E.M. Beauty packages that were sent to fans, with a note: "See you next year".[13][14] Grande revealed its cover artwork via social media on January 7, 2024, which shows a blurry shot of the left side of her face. In it, she wears the "On Your Collar" classic lipstick of the red shade "Attention", which is a part of the R.E.M. Beauty collection.[15] It was photographed by Katia Temkin.[16] According to Grande, the single cover will also serve as one of the album's cover variants.[17]

Composition

"Yes, And?" is 3 minutes and 34 seconds long.[18] Grande, Martin, and Ilya Salmanzadeh produced and programmed the song and provided background vocals. Martin and Salmanzadeh played drums, keyboards, and bass, and the latter played piano. Sam Holland and Lou Carrao handled engineering with assistance from Eric Eylands and Rob Sellens. Randy Merrill mastered the song, and Serban Ghenea mixed it with assistance from Bryce Bordone.[19]

"Yes, And?" is a house song, which has a "ballroom-ready house beat" inspired by Madonna's 1990 single "Vogue" according to Rolling Stone's Brittany Spanos.[20] Grande employs the use of profanity over its lyrics which encourage listeners to overcome negativity. She also addresses criticisms of her personal life: "Don't comment on my body, do not reply/Your business is yours and mine is mine/Why do you care so much whose dick I ride?".[21]

Music video

On December 19, 2023 it was reported that Grande had been spotted shooting the video for what at the time was assumed to be the first single on the album.[22] Grande later shared a teaser trailer for the song's music video on January 11, 2024. It depicts the acronym "AG7"—a reference to her untitled seventh studio album. The video and song can be seen to not only reference Madonna's 1990 single "Vogue" but also to "Cold Hearted" by Paula Abdul released in 1989, through the choreography, set and outfits. The geographical coordinates 41°03′59″N 71°95′45″W are displayed, which locate Montauk, New York, one of the key filming locations for the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004); Grande has claimed to be a fan of Jim Carrey, who played the lead in it.[8]

The music video for "Yes, And?" was released via Grande's Vevo channel on YouTube at 10:00 AM EST (Eastern Standard Time) on January 12, ten hours after the song's release.[8]
