Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Workshops will be provided for Wikipedia newcomers. Female-identified editors are particularly encouraged to attend. This is a feminist event.

Art+Feminism is a rhizomatic campaign to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia, and to encourage female editorship. Wikipedia's gender trouble is well documented. In a 2011 survey, Wikimedia found that less than 13% of its contributors are female. The reasons for the gender gap are up for debate: suggestions include leisure inequality, how gender socialization shapes public comportment, and the contentious nature of Wikipedia's talk pages. The practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Many articles on notable women in history and art are absent on Wikipedia. We invite people of all gender identities and expressions, particularly trans- and cis-gendered women, to address this absence by organizing in-person, communal updating of Wikipedia’s entries on art and feminism.

Montréal will be hosting a third annual edit-a-thon at CWAHI. CWAHI is wheelchair accessible venue and there is access to accessible washrooms in the building. Childcare will be provided free of charge for this event by the Childcare Collective of QPIRG Concordia and will be located at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute (MU Building, 2170 Bishop). All workshops and talks will be presented in English and French. Please ask for a translation if needed. We are committed to creating a safe space for all participants.

Anne Goldenberg will offer a workshop on anti oppressive approaches to Wikipedia. Anne Goldenberg is interested in political, epistemic and poetic platforms both collaborative and participative. She has a PhD in Communications (UQAM, Montreal) and Sociology (UNice, Nice) and wrote her thesis on "the negotiation of contributions in public wikis."

Art+Féminisme est une campagne rhizomatique dont le but est d'améliorer la couverture des femmes en arts sur Wikipédia ainsi que d'y encourager les contributions rédigées par des femmes. Le problème du genre au sein de Wikipédia est bien documenté: suite à une enquête en 2011, Wikimédia a relevé que moins de 13% des contributions sont rédigées par des femmes. Les raisons avancées pour expliquer cet écart sont multiples: certain.e.s le justifient par l'inégalité des loisirs, la façon dont la socialisation genrée forme le comportement public, ainsi que le ton querelleur des pages de discussion. Toutefois, l'effet concret de cette disparité est clair: le contenu est faussé par le manque de participation des femmes. Plusieurs articles sur des femmes importantes pour l'histoire de l'art manquent à Wikipédia. Nous invitons les personnes de toutes les identités et expressions de genre, en particulier les les femmes trans et cis, à répondre à cette absence en organisant des rencontres collaboratives de contributions et mises à jour où les participantes se concentrent sur les articles au sujet de l'art et du féminisme.

C'est au Réseau d'étude sur l'histoire des artistes canadiennes (CWAHI) que se tiendra à Montréal la troisième journée contributive annuelle. Le CWAHI est accessible en fauteuil roulant et il y a des toilettes publiques accessibles dans le bâtiment. Un service de garde sera offert gratuitement par le Childcare Collective de QPIRG Concordia et sera situé à l'institut Simone de Beauvoir (Pavillon MU, 2170 rue Bishop). Tous les ateliers et les présentations seront offerts en français et en anglais. Si vous avez besoin de traduction, n'hésitez pas à nous le demander. Anne Goldenberg offrira un atelier sur les approches anti-oppressives à Wikipédia. Anne Goldenberg s’intéresse aux aspects politiques, épistémiques et poétiques des plate-formes collaboratives et des dispositifs participatifs. Elle détient un doctorat en Communications (UQAM, Montréal) et Sociologie (UNice, Nice). Elle a rédigé sa thèse sur « la négociation des contributions dans les wikis publics ».
