Summer Olympics appearances (overview) | |
Liechtenstein competed at the Summer Olympic Games at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, from 1 to 16 August 1936. Six male competitors took part in five events in three sports.[2] It was the first Olympic games in which Liechtenstein competed in, with the Liechtenstein Olympic Committee being founded the year previously.[3]
It was only at these games that Liechtenstein realized their flag was identical to that of Haiti, prompting Liechtenstein to add the crown found in their current flag. This modified design was adopted on June 24, 1937.[4]
Background[edit]
The 1936 Summer Olympics was the first that Liechtenstein competed in.[3] In order to do so, the Liechtenstein Olympic Committee was established the previous year under the initiative of Woldemar von Falz-Fein and Eduard von Falz-Fein.[5][6] Alexander Frick served as president of the committee for the 1936 Olympics, with Eduard Theodor von Falz-Fein as the attaché.[7]
Athletics[edit]
Liechtenstein held trials for its inaugural Olympic athletics team in 1936, featuring Xaver Frick and Oskar Ospelt. Frick won the races over 200, 400, and 800 metres, while Ospelt won the 100 m and the discus and javelin throws.[8]
