Introduction

A school is both the educational institution and building designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is sometimes compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools that can be built and operated by both government and private organization. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional terms section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught is commonly called a university college or university.

In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (elementary in the U.S.) and secondary (middle school in the U.S.) education. Kindergarten or preschool provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods. (Full article...)

The City of London School, also known as CLS and City, is a private day school for boys in the City of London, England, on the banks of the River Thames next to the Millennium Bridge, opposite Tate Modern. It is a partner school of the City of London School for Girls and the City of London Freemen's School. All three schools receive funding from the City's Cash. It is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC). It is one of the most academically selective and successful schools in the country.

The school was founded by a private Act of Parliament in 1834, following a bequest of land in 1442 for poor children in the City of London. The original school was established at Milk Street, moving first to the Victoria Embankment in 1879 and subsequently to its present site on Queen Victoria Street in 1986. (Full article...)

The Lycée Louis-le-Grand (sometimes nicknamed LLG) is a public high school located in Paris, widely regarded as one of the most demanding in France. Formerly known as the Collège de Clermont, it was named in king Louis XIV of France's honor after he visited the school and offered his patronage. Countless former pupils have become statesmen, diplomats, prelates, marshals of France, members of the Académie française, and men and women of letters.

1954 – The United States Supreme Court hands down a decision for Brown v. Board of Education, overturning earlier rulings going back to Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, and declaring that state laws that established separate public schools for black and white students denied black children equal educational opportunities.

18th

1927 – School board member Andrew Kehoe sets up a series of bombs in a Bath Township, Michigan elementary school, killing 45 people and injuring 58. The bombings were the deadliest act of mass murder in a school in U.S. history and became known as the Bath School disaster.

29th

1966 – A group of students at the Tsinghua University Middle School in China use the name Red Guards to sign two big-character posters issued on 29 May. The name would eventually become the label for students and other young people in the People's Republic of China, who were mobilized by Mao Zedong between 1966 and 1968, during the Cultural Revolution.

Ethel Elizabeth McGhee Davis (November 30, 1899 – July 13, 1990) was an American educator, social worker, and college administrator. She served as the student adviser (1928–1931) and as the Dean of Women (1931–1932) for Spelman College in Atlanta.

Raised in Greenville, Georgia, Davis attended elementary and high school at Spelman College, where she graduated in 1919. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 1923 and earned her diploma in social work from the New York School of Social Work in 1925. Davis became the first African American professional social worker in Englewood, New Jersey, when she accepted the position of Director of Social Work at the Social Service Federation for Englewood's African American community in 1925.
