'N SYNC (sometimes stylized as ★NSYNC and known as J5 between 1987 and 1993) are an American boyband formed in Orlando, Florida consisting of members Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick and Joey Fatone.

The group was originally formed in 1987 when Timberlake, Chasez and Bass were joined by Anton and Marlon Jackson on The Disney Channel's Disney Playhouse. The group appeared on the show under the name J5 and signed a recording contract with Walt Disney Records. The group released three albums before Timberlake quit both the group and the show after signing a solo recording contract with Epic Records and was replaced by Daniel Tuck who became the group's lead singer. After the release of a greatest hits record, Chasez also quit the group and was released by Matthew Richards. The group released a further two studio albums before splitting up due to the end of 'Playhouse'. In their six year career, J5 sold 45 million records worldwide.

In 1994, Timberlake was approached by Lou Pearlman who was looking to form a new boyband. He suggested the addition of Chasez and Bass with Kirkpatrick and Fatone joining the group a few months later. The group would be signed by Epic Records in a landmark deal. In a 1995 interview, Timberlake revealed the name of the group would be 'NSYNC and claimed the group was a "natural succession" from J5 and they "recognise" their past. Later that year, the group released "Off The Wall" as their debut album under the name which went onto sell over 20 million copies worldwide.

In January 1996, the group fired Pearlman and sued him and his record company for defrauding the group. The case was settled out of court. Later that year, the group released what would become not only their best-selling album but also the best-selling album in history. "Thriller" sold between 65-70 million copies worldwide and the album topped the Billboard 200 chart for 37 weeks and was in the top 10 of the 200 for 80 consecutive weeks. It was the first album to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles. Their following albums "Bad" (1998), "Dangerous" (2001) and "HIStory" (2004) also rank amongst the best-selling in the world. In 2005, following the release of their remix album "Blood On The Dancefloor", which became the best-selling remix album of all time, the group announced a hiatus to focus on solo projects. Despite this, the band has not recorded new material since and weren't seen together as a five-piece until Chris Kirkpatrick's wedding in 2013. The group's official website was shut down in the summer of 2006, and in 2007, Lance Bass confirmed that the group has "definitely broken up."

In August 2005, on the 20th anniversary of the release of their debut album, the group announced they had reunited to release a new studio album later in the year. The record, titled "Invincible" was released on November 13th and sold 14 million copies by the end of the year making it the best-selling album of the year and one of the fastest selling albums of all time.

In January 2004, Timberlake confirmed in a radio interview that the group would be releasing their fifth album later in the year and had begun writing a few days earlier. Timberlake and Chasez would take a trip to Capri to meet with James Harris and Terry Lewis to work on the album which was written within two months.

In February, during the writing sessions, Timberlake appeared at the 2004 Superbowl Half-Time Show alongside Janet Jackson which caused public outrage when he exposed her breast. Production of the album was halted and both Jackson and 'N Sync were banned from attending the Grammy Awards a week later unless an apology was issued. A few days following the ceremony, Timberlake called Jackson and asked her to join him in the studio to write a song about the media reaction which was almost all negative towards Jackson whilst Timberlake remained relatively unscathed.

The resulting track "Scream" would become the lead single from the group's fifth album. The track featured Timberlake and Jackson sharing lead vocals whilst the b-side "Childhood" featured Chasez taking the lead. The tracks became top ten hits in the majority of music markets it was released in. The release would however cause tension between Timberlake and Chasez. The music video for "Scream" was given a budget of $7 million meaning "Childhood", which would have seen the focus on Chasez, did not have a music video produced. The "Scream" video became the most expensive video in history. The video also received criticism due to mainly focusing on Timberlake and Jackson whilst the remaining four members were seen rarely.

The second single "You Are Not Alone" became the group's thirteenth and final US #1 single whilst the third single "Earth Song", released only internationally, became their fifth UK #1 single. The fourth single "They Don't Care About Us" featured Chasez on lead vocals and peaked at #30 in the US which remains their lowest-charting single to date. The fifth and final single "Stranger In Moscow" originally featured Timberlake on lead vocals but
