Name of the league[edit]

I was curious about the source of the name Drew League. I'm guessing it's named after Charles R. Drew. The article says "The Drew League was founded in 1973 by Alvin Wills, who worked at Charles R. Drew Middle School." The web site for the school does not provide any background or history about the school or its name.[1]

As it is, I don't think it was a middle school then. That concept was created in the mid-1990s when the state of California required classroom size reduction for grades 1, 2, and 3.[2] To free up classrooms the 6th grade was moved from many elementary schools to intermediate or junior high schools which covered grades 7 and 8. That resulted in grade 6, 7, and 8 middle schools. In 1973 the school seemed to be called the Charles Drew Junior High School[3] but I'd want a better source as it may have been the Charles R. Marc Kupper Although they don't seem to have their own website, based on this (https://www.cde.ca.gov/schooldirectory/details?cdscode=19647336057962), the school started in 1963. By chance it was called the Charles R. Drew Junior High School then, but it does not seem like there are online publications that call it that. So I figure it's safe to use the current name Charles R. Drew Middle School as it is. Nintendoswitchfan (talk) 04:46, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
