Pulang Araw (transl. red sun) is an upcoming Philippine television drama war series to be broadcast by GMA Network. Directed by Dominic Zapata, it stars Alden Richards, Barbie Forteza, Sanya Lopez, David Licauco and Dennis Trillo. It is set to premiere on July 29, 2024 on the network's Prime line up.

The series will be streaming online on Netflix.

Premise[edit]

During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, four childhood friends—Eduardo, Hiroshi, and half-sisters Teresita and Adelina—will navigate their respective lives as their dreams, friendships, and loyalties are tested in the midst of the Second World War.[3][4]

Development[edit]

Suzette Doctolero began conceptualizing Pulang Araw between 2012 and 2013 after the success of her 2011 historical drama Amaya,[16] but the project was shelved for years. Following the critical acclaim for Maria Clara at Ibarra in 2022, which she also wrote, Pulang Araw's production was soon announced in mid-2023, with her as the head writer.[5]

Doctolero's interest in writing a story set during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines was attributed to her family's experience in the war, particularly her grandparents who were guerrilla fighters and vaudeville performers.[17] Along with the production team, she spent months researching and interviewing World War II veterans, vaudeville artists, and comfort women to develop the characters' stories.[9]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography commenced on December 1, 2023.[18]

Release[edit]

The pilot episode of Pulang Araw is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 26, 2024, while its television debut on GMA Network is slated for a July 29, 2024 broadcast.[7] A 45-second teaser trailer was unveiled on June 10.[19]
