Notability, NPOV questions about basketball focus[edit]

Hi,

Is there a reason to include the details of the 2008 NMAA state basketball tournament? Wouldn't denoting the state champions of each division be enough? Maybe we can split off the tournament into a different article? Greg Comlish (talk) 13:01, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed split of article into narrative and list[edit]

I propose that we split this article and use an organization similar to Minnesota State High School League. That article has an informative narrative about the League itself, and refers to a separate article List of Minnesota State High School League State Championships for the complete list of championships by sport, division, and year. Minnesota's list is so long it is further split by season, but for NMAA we could just use one list.

Deleted list of alignments[edit]

The list of alignments that was in this article was only for basketball (although it did not say that). Each sport has its own set of alignments, and rather than list them all, I deleted the basketball list and added a reference to the alignment and classification document on the NMAA web site, that gives the complete list of alignments. --Uncia (talk) 03:50, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The templates at the bottom of the page, for example Template:NNAA 5A, are probably only for basketball too, although I didn't check that. As I noted in the article, each sport has its own set of districts, and schools may compete in a higher class for a sport than their enrollment would indicate, so there's no way to give a summary for all sports that is both simple and accurate. Completely rewritten[edit]

I completely rewrote the article, adding a lot of info and giving sources for everything. There's no standard format for articles on state athletic associations, and I modeled this rewrite somewhat on the following: Arkansas Activities Association, Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association, Georgia High School Association, Illinois High School Association, and University Interscholastic League. Still needed: more 3rd party references. There's little press coverage of NMAA itself except when one of its ruling is appealed.

Notable differences from previous version:

  • focus on the organization rather than the tournaments it runs
  • use correct infobox
  • add info on non-athletic activities sanctioned by NMAA
  • deleted the listing of schools (Template:NNAA 3A, Template:NNAA 4A, Template:NNAA 5A). I believe these are oversimplified and possibly misleading: some schools are in more than one division depending on sport, and the templates don't show that
  • deleted (again) the list of alignments (see previous note) - this was deleted before, but an IP editor put it back in without explanation
  • deleted the table "Schools with Most State Titles" as this is about the schools (not NMAA) and is already on List of New Mexico Activities Association championships
