Abbreviation for "Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code", a character encoding used on IBM mainframes and AS400s. It is descended from punched cards. Today outside IBM everyone uses ASCII (and its descendants) instead; EBCDIC is considered a bit of a dinosaur.
