Programming is the act of instructing a machine to perform some work.

<some history...>

The first computer programmer is widely recoginzed to be AdaLovelace, daughter of Anabella and LordByron (the poet). Anabella gave her love of mathematics to Ada, who after meeting CharlesBabbage helped him work on his DifferenceEngine and other machines, documenting his designs and developing programs for them. Even though Babbage never completed construction of any of his machines, the work that he and Ada did on them earned her the title of the world's first computer programmer.
